Abstract

Basic axiom in the orthodontic treatment is “bone trace tooth movement”, which means that a good orthodontic tooth movement is a tooth movement followed by remodeling of alveolus bone in the same degree (BT ratio 1:1). This study described tooth movement and bone remodeling of maxillary anterior region in the end of stage IIIBegg technique orthodontic treatment of Class I Angle malocclusion with protrusive maxillary incisors in adult patients who were treated in Orthodontic Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, GadjahMada University from 1997 to 2005. Twenty-two cases fulfilled the criteria of research subjects. Cephalogram in the end of treatment was superimposed on the cephalogram of initial treatment for each case. The changes of point A described the amount of labial cortex bone remodeling, whereas the changes of maxillary incisor apex described the amount of tooth movement. The average of point A changes was 1.37 mm and average of incisors apex changes was 2.65 mm (ratio 1:1.93). The results demostrated that there was tooth movement which was greater than bone remodeling.

Abstract

An essential aspect of orthodontic treatment planning is assessing the alignment of the upper and lower incisors, which can be determined by measuring the interincisal angle. Retracting the anterior teeth results in a change in the angle of the upper and lower incisors, which is anticipated to enhance the facial profile. This study aims to determine changes in interincisal angle and their relationship with changes in facial profile in patients with fixed orthodontic treatment with premolars extraction and have had anterior teeth retracted. The study used 25 cephalometric X-ray samples before treatment and after anterior tooth retraction from fixed orthodontic patients at RSGM UMY. The interincisal angle was measured utilizing the WebCeph application, and the soft tissue profile angle was assessed using ImageJ software, where the landmark points employed in the lateral photo using the Graber method. The data were then analyzed using SPSS with a paired t-test and Spearman. The results exhibited a significant difference in the interincisal angle (sig. value 0.000 <0.05), but no significant difference in the facial profile angle (sig. value 0.072 > 0.05). The Spearman test indicating no significant relationship between changes in interincisal and profile angle (sig. 0.189, p>0.05). In this case, retraction induces a change in the inclination of the anterior teeth but does not lead to a substantial change in the profile angle. Various elements, including the morphology, thickness, and tonicity of the soft tissue, as well as the patient's muscle pattern, might affect changes in the soft tissue profile.

Abstract

Background: Orthodontics is one of the dental rehabilitation treatments for malocclusion correction, such as fixed orthodontic treatment using brackets, as the use of orthodontic brackets for a prolonged period can damage the enamel. Novamin contains casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), which can be used to prevent enamel erosion. Purpose: The aim of this study is to elucidate the effect of Novamin on the enamel content and microstructure surface after bracket removal. Methods: This study used 25 human premolar teeth randomly divided into five groups: I (Control); II (Biofix etching and bracket mounting); III (Biofix-Novamin); IV (Fuji Ortho); and V (Fuji Ortho-Novamin). Results: The results represent significant differences in the average levels of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) among the treatment groups (p ≤ 0.05). The changes to the enamel surface indicated the opening of enamel prisms, pits, and grooves. The levels of Ca and P increased after applying Novamin, especially in groups II and III, indicating remineralization on the enamel surface. When Novamin reacts with saliva, it starts to remineralize, and sodium ions are released. The sodium ions exchange with hydrogen cations, releasing Ca and P ions from Novamin particles. Conclusion: Novamin presented the capability to stimulate remineralization after orthodontic bracket debonding through altering the Ca and P levels on the enamel surface.

Abstract

Introduction: Relapse is one of the undesirable effects of orthodontic treatment. Prevention of relapse has been carried out with the use of retainer devices. Several studies also have been carried out to prevent relapse with pharmacological agents such as bisphosphonates. One of the strongest bisphosphonates is risedronate. Systemic use of bisphosphonates can cause bisphosphonate-related necrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). Systemic effects can be minimised by topical preparations locally, where the virgin coconut oil (VCO) emulgel is one of the topical preparations which controls the release of drugs. This study aims to analyse the release profile of risedronate emulgel as a material to inhibit relapse movement. Methods: This research was conducted in an experimental laboratory. Group 1 was emulgel without bisphosphonate risedronate with virgin coconut oil (VCO), Group 2 was VCO emulgel with bisphosphonates risedronate, and Group 3 was a pure bisphosphonate risedronate solution. Each group weighing 100 mg was placed in 10 ml PBS, and the release test was conducted with UV/VIS Spectrophotometer wavelength λ 262 nm at intervals of 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, and 96 hours with three replications at each group. Results: Grup 2 yielded a controlled drug release of risedronate until 96 hours, while a pure solution of risedronate resulted in an uncontrolled drug release of risedronate, which was released entirely in 4 hours. Conclusion: Risedronate emulgel with VCO had a controlled drug release compared to pure bisphosphonate solution to potentially be applied topically to inhibit relapse movement.

Abstract

Good oral and dental health status in children is very important for children's growth, development, health and welfare. Oral hygiene is one of the important standards for maintaining good dental and oral health. Based on 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) data, the majority of people (94.7%) currently have the habit of brushing their teeth every day, but only 2.8% brush their teeth properly. SDN Margomulyo 1 is one of the elementary schools in Sleman, Yogyakarta where the majority of students generally have the habit of snacking and sweet foods without following the habit of maintaining good dental and oral health. This community service is carried out by holding dental health education and tooth brushing training for students in grades 4 and 5. All students do questions before and after the education to determine the level of students' knowledge. The results of statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon test obtained p <0.05 which shows that there is a significant difference before and after the counseling, so it can be concluded that counseling about dental and oral health and tooth brushing training is effective in increasing the knowledge of grade 4 and 5 of elementary school students at SD N Margomulyo 1.Keywords: counseling, oral health, training, brushing teeth
