Abstract

Bahasa sebagai alat komunikasi antara lain didukung dengan keahlian dan unsur bahasa. Beberapa unsur bahasa yang dirasa lebih penting dibandingkan dengan unsur bahasa yang lain adalah: pelafalan, tata bahasa, dan (pembentukan) kosakata. Ketiga unsur bahasa tersebut relatif sangat dibutuhkan untuk mendapatkan komunikasi yang benar, jelas dan berterima. Di kudus berdirilah sebuah madrasah yang bernama Taswiquttullab Salafiyah atau TBS Kudus. Bahasa Inggris juga diajarkan di sini. Tetapi ada permasalahan ditengah perjalanan pendidikan tersebut, yaitu rendahnya minat peserta didik untuk mempelajari bahasa Inggris. Mereka beranggapan bahwa bahasa Inggris tidak begitu penting untuk dipelajari, karena itu bahasanya kaum penjajah yang telah menyengsarakan kita selama beratus-ratus tahun. Di lain pihak mereka sangat antusias untuk mempelajari bahasa Arab. Mereka beranggapan bahwa dengan mempelajari bahasa yang merupakan bahasa yang digunakan dalam kitab suci Alquran, Hadis, dan buku-buku keagamaan lain, mereka secara otomatis juga mempelajari agama yang mereka peluk. Artikrl ini merupakan suatu penelitian eksperimen dengan mengaplikasikkan suatu strategi pembelajaran yang membandingkan persamaan antara bahasa Arab dan bahasa Inggris, yaitu strategi ARALISH Contrastive Analysis. Strategi di samping mempermudah dan sekaligus memotivasi siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris dengan mengetahui ternyata bahasa Arab dan Inggris memiliki persamaan-persamaan. Abstract

Language is a means of communication which has two main systems, i.e. system of form and meaning. The meanings realized by language are textual and contextual meaning. Therefore, language cannot be separated from its context of use. This study investigates how context of situation influences the use of language, more specifically, in the perspective of language meta-function concept. The language that is used in news items, like daily newspaper also has certain characteristic which is influenced by the author (the writer) and the socio- political situation of the society. The objective of the research is to describe how ideational meaning is realized in the Jakarta Post headline news on the fuel increasing issue. The research is a text analysis by using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory which cover (1) the classification imbedded in the phase sequences, (2) the sequences of events in the phases, (3) The sequences of events of the Jakarta Post Headline News on fuel price- increasing issue in April 2012, which are specifically concerned with the process and (4) how people and thing are attributed in the text.

Abstract

Film animasi merupakan salah satu media pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan untuk menjembatani pembelajaran agar lebih menarik dan memberikan nuansa lingkungan yang baru bagi siswa. Pentingnya media hadir dalam pembelajaran merupakan alternatif untuk memunculkan rangsangan, keaktifan, keterampilan yang baru bagi siswa dan mengetahui bentuk nyata terhadap aplikasi pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif dengan tipe pemaparan deskriptif. Subyek pada penelitian ini merupakan siswa sekolah dasar yang ada di Kecamatan Dawe Kabupaten Kudus. Pengumpulan data menggunakan simak catat, teknik pustaka, observasi, dan wawancara. Teknik pemeriksaan keabsahan data menggunakan trianggulasi teori. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan penggunaan film animasi dapat digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran tematik terpadu pada siswa sekolah dasar. Kedua, pembelajaran tematik terpadu dapat diaplikasikan dengan film animasi yang didalamnya menceritakan mengenai tema pembelajaran yang dipelajari siswa. Ketiga, kemampuan keaksaraan siswa dapat meningkat melalui penggunaan film animasi dengan multibahasa sebagai sarana pengenalan bahasa kepada siswa sekolah dasar.

Abstract

Problems of delivering instructions have been faced by student teachers as the prospective EFL teacher candidates in many teaching practicum cases. This phenomenon has led to challenging discussions on how to cope with the problems. It also in one side brings about an awareness of the importance of empowering student teachers with good classroom English proficiency as one of the required skills that should be owned by English teacher candidates. This study reveals how Communicative Peer Assessment (CPA) works for developing the Classroom English proficiency of EFL teacher candidates. Referring to the research result CPA has been proven to give significant contribution to the teacher candidates in terms of some learning experiences, i.e. (a) allowing them to perform intensive communication practice; (b) stimulating the efforts of improving the classroom English performance through the peer teaching reflections; and (c) contextualizing the instructional English expressions.

Abstract

Distance learning has recently been implemented by most universities in Indonesia along with the pandemic situation. Challenges in learning and teaching have been following up during the implementation of distance learning including the emergence of communication gap or distance between lecturers and students, which is popularly known as transactional distance. The study aimed to describe the presence of lecturer-student transactional distance in terms of lecturers’ teaching reflection of their satisfaction towards online learning activities. By conducting a survey to 12 lecturers from different educational institutions and referring to the theory of Transactional Distance of Michael G. Moore, the study found that transactional distance occurred during online learning indicated by several aspects, i.e., (1) the existence of psychological gap in the course, (2) non-existence of interactive communication between lecturer and student, and (3) high rigidity of course structure.

Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing the students’ obstacles in listening comprehension during the TOEFL test. This present research aims (1) to find out what problems are faced by the students in listening comprehension and (2) to find the students’ strategies to overcome the problems faced in listening comprehension of English Education Department students of Universitas Muria Kudus. This qualitative case study is involving 53 participants who took the TOEFL course every semester in the academic year 2021/2022. The data was accumulated by using questionnaires and interviews. The result of the research showed that bad recording of the audio system during the listening section, the pace of the speakers when they speak, losing concentration, and the distraction from the non-technical side were the major obstacles in listening comprehension encountered by the students. This research also shows the strategies proposed by the students to enhance their listening skills. Despite the difficulty, the students agreed that listening comprehension skills are one of the most important skills that they had to learn as young learners because listening skills consist of language skills that they must master it. Knowing students’ obstacles to listening comprehension may help the teachers to propose and develop effective learning strategies, and also for the Lab UPT Bahasa to improve the quality of the audio system. The suggestion is made for marking the obstacles regarding how students could help themselves and all the parties could help their students to overcome the obstacles encountered by the students in listening comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract: This study focuses on investigating the students' perceptions of the Pomodoro study technique and how the Pomodoro study technique influences students' English learning habits. Pomodoro study technique is a study technique that uses a timer to break down work into intervals. To find out the answers for research purposes, a semi-structured interview and Likert-scale questionnaire were used. After analyzing and interpreting the data the finding shows that the students perceive the Pomodoro study technique as an effective technique to improve their English learning habits. Some aspects of the students’ learning habits that have been improved are their focus, discipline, concentration, productivity, and motivation. Also, in their opinion, the rules of the Pomodoro study technique were easy to follow. The finding from the Likert-scale questionnaire shows that the Pomodoro study technique improves and influences most students' learning habits indicators. The indicators are time management, concentration, discipline, self-control, and self-improvement. Based on the questionnaire result, the range agree has the highest number of responses which is 47. The results demonstrate that the Pomodoro study technique improves the students' learning habits, so it can be said that the Pomodoro study technique is effective. The indication of the conclusion is based on the descriptive rating scale.

Abstract

The study aimed to know students’ public speaking obstacles in joining Indonesia International IoT Olympiad (I3O) and strategies to overcome it. The study used qualitative research with case study design. It took 6 students from fourth and sixth semester. There were 3 students from English Education Department and 3 students from Non-English Education Department (Agriculture, Information Systems, and Mathematics Education) who joined I3O 2022. The researcher took offline and online competitions which is an online competition (judging session record) got when the researcher became a moderator in that event. The study used questionnaire, interview, and observation for the instruments. It found linguistic and non-linguistic obstacles in public speaking. Linguistic obstacles for English major and non-English major students are lack of grammar, lack of vocabulary, and lack of pronunciation. In non-linguistic obstacles, English major students faced inhibition, fear of making mistakes, felt nervous and anxiety, can’t cooperate with team, worried when they were answering questions from judges, fear that audience didn’t understand what they said, didn’t master the material, and confused to start speaking. While, Non-English major students faced inhibition, felt nothing to say, became low participation, use mother tongue, fear of making mistakes, nervous, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, can’t cooperate with team, worried when answer the questions from judges. English and non-English major students have strategies to overcome public speaking obstacles. There are gesturing, practicing, using note card, visualization, and preparation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students' opinions about the English for International Communication (EIC) program, which is followed by students of Universitas Muria Kudus (UMK) and managed by UPT Bahasa. The method of this research is descriptive research with a survey method by distributing questionnaires to 800 students who participated in the EIC program in 2019 from 13 undergraduate study programs in the UMK environment, but there were only 665 respondents who filled out.  The questionnaire contains 14 closed-question items, which include teaching methods, teaching materials, media used, evaluation as well as interest and mastery of the material. used, evaluation as well as interest and mastery of the material. In addition, there is a special item that asks about native speakers as the EIC teaching team. The data collected was then analyzed based on the theme by using percentages. The data was then analyzed based on theme of the question items and made a percentage. The finding shows that they have a positive perception of the EIC program, particularly on the aspects of motivating students, teaching method, teaching media, and native teacher. Some recommendations are proposed for the university to make the program better in the future.

Abstract

An analysis is very important to know the students’ errors. Then the teacher can pay attention to the students’ errors. Therefore, the objectives of this research is to identify the error types which did by the eleventh-grade of SMA N 1 BAE KUDUS Academic Year 2022/2023 made in constructing conditional sentence type 1. The research employed the content analysis qualitative research. The subject of the research was the students of XI IPS 2 at SMAN 1 Bae Kudus Academic Year 2022/2023, while the sample were 36 students. In data collecting technique, the researcher used student daily assessment given by the English teacher. Then, the researcher analysed and classified the students error based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay’s theory. They are omission, addition, missformation, and missorder. After analysing the data, the researcher found 166 incorrect items which made by the students in making conditional sentence type 1. The proportions (frequency and percentage) of the students error are omission 43 items or 25,9%, addition 74 items or 44,5%, missformation 39 items or 23,4%, and missorder 10 items or 6,2%. Therefore, the result from this research show that addition is the highest error was made by the students.Furthermore, we can conclude that the highest frequency types of error made by the students of XI IPS 2 at SMAN 1 Bae Kudus Academic Year 2022/2023 in writing conditional sentence type 1 found in their daily assessment is addition with the percentage 44,5% items of error.
