Abstract

Lucanids beetles play a very important role in forest ecosystem and as an crucial element of biodiversity.   The objectives of the research were to study the effects of different altitutdes on the community of lucanids beetles. Beetles collection was conducted by hand collection.  Insect  collections were conducted monthly during 12 months. This result identified 12 species of Lucanids beetles with 1.133 individuals. Altitude was found to have a strong effect on Lucanids beetles community. Redundancy analysis identified that total volume of coarse woody debris in the selected locations was recorded as key environmental factor influencing community structure of lucanids beetles. Based on canonical correspondence analysis, the distribution of the beetles were affected by the volume of coarse woody debris in decay class 2.

Abstract

Lepidopteran community and its parasitoid on cucumber field in Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur District, West Java. Cucumber is one of horticultural commodities that are widely cultivated in Indonesia, but information related to Lepidoptera pests and their parasitoids are limited. The aim of this study was to obtain information about Lepidopteran community on cucumber and their parasitoid diversity. Lepidopteran larvae were collected from 16 cucumber sites in the District of Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur in November 2014 until May 2015. Larvae were collected from each cucumber plant follow along 60 m transects. Larvae were collected from the field then brought to the laboratory. All larvae were then reared on cucumber leaves until pupation and parasitoids emerged. The data obtained were tested by analysis of the mean and analysis of variance (One way ANOVA) using the program R Stat. The results showed that cucumber plants were attacked by six species (morphospecies) belonging to four families of Lepidoptera. Diaphania indica (Saunders) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is the most abundant species found. All species (morphospecies) of Lepidoptera are more common when the cucumber plants are in the generative growth stage. Our result further showed that D. indica was attacked by 9 parasitoid larvae and 3 parasitoid pupae, C. chalcites (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by 5 parasitoids dan S. litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by 2 parasitoids. A braconid, Apanteles taragamae, is the most common parasitoid of D. indica found in the field. Its parasitism rate can reach 27% in the field. Overall, this research revealed that a number of parasitoids, that were found attacking Lepidopteran on cucumber indicates their potential use as biological control agents in this agroecosystems.

Abstract

The use of transgenic varieties on the agricultural production system may provide some agronomical benefits. However, uses of transgenic variety have raised some debates about their potential negative impact on the environment, such as on the decreasing of natural enemies. To study the impact of transgenic variety to the natural enemies, study was conducted on larvae development, and the survival of predatoral insect (V. lineata) on the transgenic Rojolele rice variety. Test was conducted at the laboratory of Molecular Biology, Research Centre for Biotechnology of Indonesian Institute of Science, from January to October 2009. Completely randomized design with 8 treatments and 30 replications were employed. The treatments were transgenic Rojolele rice as follow: 4.2.3-28-15-2-7 and 4.2.4-21-8-16-4 lines contained fusion of two cry genes (cryIB-cryIAa). The 3R9-8-28-26-2 and 3R7-8-15-2-7 lines contained mpi::cryIB gene, the T9-6.11-420 line contained cryIAb gene obtained by particle bombardment, DTcry (azygous) is a segregate and does not contain cry gene (null), DTcry-13 line contained cryIAb gene by Agrobacterium, and non transgenic rice (Rojolele variety). Results showed that there were differences of larvae development and survival of insect predator V. lineata fed on the among transgenic rice lines. On transgenic line T9-6.11-420 and on DTcry-13 line the life time, developmental stages, the number eclosion of adult female, adult insect weight, and survival of the preimaginal and the adult of insect predator were consistently low. On the transgenic line 4.2.3-28-15-2-7; 3R9-8-28-26-2; and 3R7-8-15-2-7 each had no consistent effect on the larvae development and the survival of insect predator. DTcry (azygous) line had no effect on the larvae development and the survival of insect predator. Whereas transgenic line 4.2.4-21-8-16-4 had an effect on the adult weight of insect predator.

Abstract

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) is a fast-growing tree native in Australia, Papua, and Eastern part of Indonesia. It is valued for its timber, oil, gum, and resin, and as an ornamental tree. Many eucalyptus clones have been developed and planted for timber production in Sumatera. Several galls caused by insects are known as serious pests of eucalyptus and can reduce the quality and quantity of the timber production. This study was aimed to identify the gall inducers and describe the galls that formed on the eucalyptus clones which planted in Mt. Mutis, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The research was conducted from October 2017 to July 2018. A total of 855 seedlings consisting of 57 clones and 15 plants for each clone were planted in Mt. Mutis. Observations of the gall symptoms were done biweekly on each plant. Gall symptoms were directly observed and identified, included the form, size, location, color, and insect that caused the gall. There were four types of gall forms were recorded. One type of gall caused by Ophelimus sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) which similar to the gall recorded in Sumatera and Java. The other three gall forms were never been reported in Indonesia. The insects that associated with galls were Hymenoptera and Diptera orders. The type of gall that mostly found in the eucalyptus clones was the big clustered leaf gall caused by Fergusonina sp. (Diptera:  Fergusoninidae).  There are only two clones which are included as susceptible clones based on the type of gall formed, C35 and C53. There were 27 eucalyptus clones with no gall infestations which were considered as the good candidate of resistance eucalyptus clones to the gall infestations.

Abstract

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is an emerging new pest species in several Asian countries including Indonesia. This pest can be a threat to Indonesian agriculture because this pest has been reported to cause many losses in other countries. As a preemptive and ecofriendly control strategy, a research to study the performance of Telenomus remus as potential biocontrol agent of this pest was done in laboratory scale. Research was done by exposing an adult female to 50 eggs of S. frugiperda in a cluster. We also exposed the female parasitoid to another 50 eggs of S. litura in a cluster for comparison since this parasitoid had been reported as S. litura egg parasitoid in Indonesia previously. Results showed that there are no difference in the numbers of parasitized eggs, parasitism rate, survival rates and percent females of T. remus reared from both S. frugiperda and S litura, which implies the effectiveness of T. remus as a candidate for bio control agent for S. frugiperda.

Abstract

Effect of host-larval diet on the host acceptance and host suitability of the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus Nixon (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) on Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The life history of parasitoids is an important factor that can determine their ability to attack a host. The type of food consumed by the host can affect the ability of parasitoids such as host searching behavior, host suitability and host acceptance. In this research, we evaluate the effect of the S. frugiperda larvae diet on its suitability of the eggs produced by the adults for the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus. The research was studied on two types of egg masses of S. frugiperda that obtained from the moths that fed with natural or artificial diet during their larval stages. Parasitoid was reared from both types of hosts. An egg mass consisting of 50 S. frugiperda eggs from both types of hosts was exposed to one egg parasitoid female for 24 hours. S. frugiperda eggs then were reared until the parasitoid adult emerged. Each experiment was repeated 20 times. Host acceptance was observed through the host parasitism rate and its parasitization. Meanwhile, the host suitability was observed through the sex ratio of the emerging parasitoids. The results showed that S. frugiperda eggs reared using artificial diet had a higher parasitism rate (99.33%) than those of natural diet (82.53%). In contrast, the level of parasitization of S. frugiperda eggs reared using natural diet was higher (78.30%) than those of artificial diet (48.34%) because the number of emerging T. remus from S. frugiperda eggs reared using natural diet was also higher than those of artificial diet. However, the sex ratio (F:M) of emerging T. remus from S. frugiperda eggs reared using both of diet was female biased.
