Abstract

Bengkulu Province is one of the provinces that experienced changes in the food security index pre and post the pandemic Covid-19. In 2018, the food security index (IKP) for Bengkulu Province was 70.77 and will decrease in 2022 to 68. Even though the IKP has decreased, Bengkulu Province is still in the food secure category. The aim of this research is to find out whether there are differences in food security conditions at the household level pre and post the pandemic Covid-19 using descriptive analysis and formal tests. The results of the analysis using the chi-square test show that the Pearson chi-square test shows a significance value of 0.00 (<α=5%). This demonstrates that the year and the food security of a household are related. In accordance with the initial assumption that the pandemic Covid-19 occurred in 2020 and 2018-2019 was the year before the pandemic and 2021-2022 was after the pandemic, it can be concluded that reject H0 where a connection between the impact of the pandemic Covid-19 and household food security. This is in line with the previous descriptive analysis where there was a relationship between the Covid-19 pandemic and household food security

Abstract

Community forests, by definition, are located on privately owned land and are managed by the local people, so there should be no tenure issues related to them. However, several factors can trigger land conflicts. First, community forests are sometimes established under profit-sharing schemes between different landowners and forest farmers who work the land. Still, the agreements are often informal and need to be in accordance with the Basic Agrarian Law (UUPA). Second, community forests planted on idle state-owned land have the potential to cause conflicts between the government and the people. Third, there are conflicts between different managers of community forests. Solutions to prevent and resolve potential tenure conflicts in community forests include: first, providing education and assistance and resolving disputes through negotiation and mediation. Second, state-owned land can be converted into private property (either for individuals or groups), and the land can be designated as HTR (Community Plantation Forests) and HKm (Community Forests). Third, encouraging the clear demarcation of land/forest boundaries used, creating a proportional social structure within the production dimension, ensuring clear land ownership and supervision, and strengthening the institutions of community forest farmers by the gove

Abstract

Bengkulu Province in Sumatra exhibits lower economic growth than the average national level. Over the past five years, its average economic growth rate has been 4.82%, significantly below the national average of 5.31%. Economic disparities are evident between cities and regencies within the province, with coastal areas dominating yet showing significant variations in economic growth. This research used secondary data from the Bengkulu Provincial Statistics Agency for 2018-2022. It applies Klassen typology analysis and the Williamson Index to measure regional development disparities. The Klassen typology categorises Bengkulu City as an advanced and rapidly growing area, while Muko-Muko Regency and North Bengkulu Regency are identified as rapidly developing regions. Conversely, Kaur Regency and Seluma Regency are categorized as relatively underdeveloped areas. The Williamson Index analysis reveals significant disparities among the regencies/cities, with an average index of 0.385, indicating an increasing trend over the years. These disparities are influenced by regional characteristics and natural resource differences, hindering equitable development. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for the government in formulating appropriate policy strategies to reduce disparities and enhance economic growth in Bengkulu Province. Strategies such as job diversification and increased employment opportunities in the fisheries and processing industries can help address the disparities and poverty in coastal areas.

Abstract

Food security is one of the crucial issues in developing countries. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) identifies four food security components: availability, affordability, utilization, and stability. Bengkulu Province, until 2023, is the second poorest province on the island of Sumatra. This has an impact on food affordability, which is a component of food security. There needs to be mapping or grouping in each region in Bengkulu Province so that the policies formed and implemented can be more optimal. This study aims to group and map areas or districts in Bengkulu Province that have similar characteristics based on aspects of food availability, food affordability or physical access to food, and aspects of food utilization. Biplot analysis describes regional characteristics and variable correlations in a two-dimensional graph. The results of grouping food security areas based on the characteristics of the three aspects are three clusters. The first cluster consists of Kaur, South Bengkulu, and Lebong. The second cluster consists of Central Bengkulu, Mukomuko, and North Bengkulu. The third cluster consists of Rejang Lebong, Seluma, and Kepahiang. The first cluster tends to have good food security because its characteristics are relatively close to the food availability and utilisation indicators. The second cluster has strong attributes as an indicator of food affordability. The third cluster has characteristics that describe indicators of lack of electricity, clean water, poverty rate, and life expectancy.

Abstract

Sungai Suci is a part of Bengkulu that is 400 meters above sea level. Sungai Suci is located in a coral coastal area with three ecosystems: the bamboo ecosystem and the sea pine ecosystem; soil arthropods are among the animals that inhabit those two environments. This study aims to look into the variety of soil arthropods in the ecosystem of Sungai Suci. Sampling bamboo and sea pine ecosystems was done by taking soil from the root areas of bamboo and sea pine. For each ecosystem, five soil samples are taken randomly as replication. The soil was placed in a smaller funnel and left for two weeks at room temperature 24ºC, and 12 hours of irradiation. Soil arthropods obtained from the three ecosystems were identified, and their numbers were recorded. The most common type of arthropod found in the three ecosystems was acarina. The study results showed that the diversity values of the bamboo and sea pine ecosystems, respectively, were 1.44 and 0.49; and. Dominance values for the bamboo and sea pine ecosystems, respectively, are 0.38 and 0.82. The evenness values of the bamboo and sea pine, respectively, are 0.56 and 0.18.

Abstract

The percentage of the population living in poverty in Bengkulu Province was not affected by the pandemic and even tended to decrease. This is contrary to the findings of studies on the impact of the pandemic on income, poverty, and food security. One way to determine the impact of the pandemic on food security is by comparing the conditions before and after the pandemic. Based on the descriptive analysis results, the food Security Index in some districts increased steadily throughout the period, but others fluctuated. Some districts experiencing fluctuations include Rejang Lebong, Seluma, and Mukomuko. The Food Security Index of other districts, including Bengkulu City, tends to increase. Only the Food Security Index of Kepahiang and Bengkulu Tengah districts shows a tendency to decrease. The results of the paired sample t-test indicate a significant difference in the food security index among districts and cities in Bengkulu Province between before and after the pandemic. This finding aligns with the descriptive analysis results that show a difference in the food security index among districts and cities in Bengkulu Province. Further analysis was conducted by considering these three aspects. However, the three aspects yielded different results in the paired sample t-test. Only in terms of food quality, the paired sample t-test results showed a significant difference in quality index between before and after the pandemic, supported by a p-value of (0.032) < alpha 5%.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the productivity of rice farming and the welfare of rice farming households in Singaran Pati Sub-District, Bengkulu City and the correlation between the two. The research location was selected purposively with the consideration that Singaran Pati Sub-District is one of the rice suppliers in Bengkulu City. The respondents consisted of 75 rice farmers who were selected using the simple random sampling method. The welfare of rice farming households was analyzed using indicators from BKKBN. The correlation between the productivity of rice farming and the welfare of rice farmer households was analyzed using the chi-square method. The results showed that the average productivity of rice farming in the research location was 4,8 tons/Ha. The level of households welfare of rice farmers in the research location with the highest percentage is KS II, which is 38,67%. The results showed a greater value of chi-square calculated than the value of the chi-square table so it was concluded that there is a correlation between the productivity of rice farming with the welfare of rice farmer households.
