Abstract

This study looked at the teratogenous effects of ethanol extracts of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. on the white mice fetus. Experimental animals consisted of 24 mices, 4 male mices and 20 female mices, divided into 4 groups, namely the negative control group, ethanol extracts of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. 150 mg/kg BW; 300 mg/kg BW; and 600 mg/kg BW. Provision is made from the 6th day until the 15th day of pregnancy. Laparactomy is carried out on the 18th day of pregnancy. The parameters observed were body weight of mices, number of fetuses, average fetal weight, and macroscopic observation of the fetus. The results showed that the parent's body weight, number of fetuses, and average fetal weight were significantly different (sig <0.05). Macroscopic observation of the fetus obtained slow growth in ethanolic extracts dose of 600 mg/kgBW. This study can be concluded that the ethanol extract of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr.has a teratogenic effect on the fetus of white mice.

Abstract

Calcium is an important micronutrient that helps prevent stunting. It plays a crucial role in bone growth. Maman (Cleome gynandra L.) is a local plant that grows in the Riau province and is used by local people as a fermented food. To utilize this local plant, it is necessary to analyze its nutrients, including calcium levels. Calcium analysis was carried out using a quantitative descriptive method with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Validation of the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method yielded a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9997, with calcium levels in maman leaves and fermented maman being 3132.33 mg/g and 1976.31 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seeds contain phenolic compounds such as flavonols and phenolic acids (myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, caffeic acid) that act as primary and synergistic antioxidants. These antioxidants reduce cholesterol by inhibiting absorption in the intestine and enhancing bile acid formation, facilitating cholesterol excretion through feces. Additionally, the high protein and fiber content in S. hispanica L. seeds reduces appetite and promotes prolonged satiety. This study evaluates the effect of different administration patterns of S. hispanica L. seeds on cholesterol reduction in common quail (Coturnix coturnix). The research involved five groups: three treatment groups receiving S. hispanica L. seeds at varying frequencies (once, twice, three times daily) and two controls (positive, negative), with six C. coturnix in each group. The S. hispanica L. seed dose was 1.8 mg per 200 g body weight (BW) administered for 30 days. Cholesterol levels were measured at baseline and after treatment and analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s Post Hoc Test. Results indicated that administering S. hispanica L. seeds three times daily significantly reduced cholesterol levels (p < 0.05) compared to other frequencies. This research provides a foundation for further exploration into practical applications of S. hispanica L. seeds in cholesterol management, both in animals and potentially in humans.

Abstract

The planting of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) in RW 5 Pebatuan Subdistrict Pekanbaru was conducted as part of the Community Service program of Poltekkes Kemenkes Riau students on May 9, 2025. This activity is a collaboration among lecturers, students, and local residents in empowering the community to provide and manage the TOGA garden. The method involved active community participation under the guidance of students and lecturers, resulting in the establishment of a medicinal plant garden that can be used for family health needs and community education. The results showed the success of the TOGA garden establishment with various medicinal plants beneficial for health and economic potential. This program is expected to be a model for community empowerment and the development of medicinal plants based on local wisdom.
