The majority of the circulated schoolbooks in America were imported from Greece. These books, how... more The majority of the circulated schoolbooks in America were imported from Greece. These books, however, did not reflect the pedagogical needs of Greek American children. To address this issue, Greek immigrants in America started producing their own schoolbooks. This chapter focuses on the first schoolbooks published in the 1930s by Greek American publishers. These early textbooks for the first grades of Elementary School (spelling books, readers, anthologies for school festivals) epitomized the ideology of Greek education in America during the first half of the twentieth century when learning the Greek language was a priority for immigrants. Just as inspiring young readers to love Greek letters was a primary aim of the authors, publishers also wished to preserve Greek traditions and Greek culture in America. “Homeland–Religion–Family,” the well-known socially conservative ideological triptych, offered the three basic pillars around which Greek American education was built.

Μπορεί το παραμύθι να τελειώνει πολύ συχνά με τη γνωστή φράση «...και ζήσαν αυτοί καλά και μεις καλύτερα», μεταφέροντας στους ακροατές ή αναγνώστες του μια υπερβατική αίσθηση αιώνιας και χαρούμενης ζωής, μιλάει ωστόσο και για στιγμές πόνου και θλίψης, όπως για παράδειγμα για τον τελευταίο σταθμό της ζωής του ανθρώπου, τον θάνατο. Ας σημειωθεί, άλλωστε, πως το παραμύθι αντικατοπτρίζει ολόκληρο τον κύκλο της ζωής, από τη γέννηση ώς τον θάνατο, κατά συνέπεια οι λαϊκές αντιλήψεις για τον θάνατο και για τους νεκρούς δεν είναι δυνατό να απουσιάζουν. Σχεδόν όλοι οι τύποι του παραμυθιού (μύθοι ζώων, μαγικά, θρησκευτικά, διηγηματικά, ευτράπελα παραμύθια) 1 περιέχουν μοτίβα ή θέματα με νεκρούς. τη σημαντική τομή στην εξέλιξη της ζωής του ανθρώπου, την αποκοπή από τη ζωή και την ένταξη στον κόσμο των νεκρών, το παραμύθι την αποδίδει με τον δικό του μαγικό τρόπο, που διαφέρει ουσιαστικά από τις εικόνες που κυριαρχούν σε άλλα είδη του προφορικού λόγου, όπως για παράδειγμα στις παραδόσεις ή τα τραγούδια. η αντίληψη που επικρατεί στα παραμύθια για τον θάνατο και τους νεκρούς απασχόλησε έντονα την παραμυθολογική έρευνα 2 .
