In 2024, approximately 1,100,000 people were living with HIV in Brazil, unchanged from the number recorded a year earlier. The number of patients with HIV in the South American country increased by approximately 15 percent during the period analyzed.
With an increasing number of people living with HIV, the Brazilian government has implemented various policies related to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Among preventative measures, information campaigns, needle exchange programs, and the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) have been carried out throughout the country, allowing for a contained epidemic.
As of 2022, an increasing number of Brazilians living with the disease reported receiving antiretroviral therapy. That year, approximately three in every four people living with HIV were treated with ART. In comparison, less than 60 percent of HIV patients had access to the treatment in 2015 and less than 40 percent in 2010.
