Traffic and road transport in India

India is one of the busiest countries in the world when it comes to road traffic. The automobile industry of the country became the fourth largest in the world in 2017. As of financial year 2020, there were nearly *** million registered vehicles in the country with close to *** million kilometers of roads. Even though the road density was quite high, India continued to suffer from poor road quality. As a result, three out of the top five most congested metropolises in the Asia Pacific region were located in India.

Traffic fatalities

India has about one percent of the global vehicle population, but it accounted for six percent of the world's road traffic accidents. In 2022, close to ***** thousand deaths were caused due to road accidents. This was also the leading cause among all the accidental deaths across India. Two-wheelers were the foremost type of vehicles involved in fatal road accidents, while speeding was the primary contributing factor towards accidents. In order to reduce the number of accidents, the government has invested heavily in improving the road infrastructure and enforcing stricter traffic laws.
