Civil engineering order value of major constructors in Japan 2015-2024

In 2024, the value of construction orders for civil engineering works received by ** major constructors in Japan amounted to around *** trillion Japanese yen. Compared to the previous year, the order value increased by **** percent. 

Civil engineering spending

Civil engineering investments declined in the fiscal year 2023. The public sector accounted for the largest share of civil engineering investments. Broken down by purpose, order values were the highest for civil engineering works on road and railway construction. Local governments’ expenses on civil engineering works were largely directed at roads and bridges. As a substantial part of the infrastructure in Japan was built in the ***** and *****, infrastructure maintenance is expected to become a key issue in the future.

Railway construction in Japan

Orders for railway construction of major constructors in Japan amounted to ***** billion yen in 2024. Several railway construction projects were launched in recent years, such as the construction of Japan’s first maglev train line, the Chuo Shinkansen. Other projects included the extension of several bullet train lines. In Japan, high-speed train construction is coordinated by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT). JRTT is also involved in overseas infrastructure projects.
