BHP was the world's leading copper mining company based on output in 2024, producing some **** million metric tons of the metal. The Australia-based company was followed by the Chilean company BHP, with a copper output of nearly *** million metric tons.

Europe was the second largest refined copper-consuming region behind China and the rest of Asia, which accounted for over half of the global demand in 2023. In 2024, China ranked fourth for copper mine production worldwide. It was dwarfed by Chile, which produced an estimated *** million metric tons of the commodity. To bridge the gap between China's copper production and consumption, China is the world's leading copper-importing country, with imports worth nearly ** billion U.S. dollars as of 2024.
