California’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached about **** trillion dollars in 2025, the largest of any state and the biggest contribution to the national total. Vermont was the smallest, at ***** billion dollars. By real per capita growth, Florida and South Carolina were the fastest expanding state economies that year. But these figures only offer a partial view of the U.S. economy.
Beyond topline GDP
Gross domestic product attempts to measure the total value of goods and services produced in an economy over a given period. Economists use it to gauge economic health and size, whether for countries, regions, or cities. It is a useful yardstick of overall activity, but it is a poor indicator of living standards or to compare countries. To fill the gaps, economists often look at GDP per person to get a sense of average living standards, and at purchasing power-adjusted GDP to account for differences in prices across countries.
United States GDP trends
The United States is the world’s largest economy, with GDP higher than any other country. China, Japan, Germany, and India round out the top five. Since 2000 the country’s GDP has roughly tripled, growing at an average annual rate of about *** percent in nominal terms. Real GDP growth per person has been mostly positive over the years, however, it has slowed since the 1990s.
America’s economy remains vast by any measure, but size alone says less than it seems.
