In 2025, the number of air-source heat pumps shipped in the United States was lower than in the previous year, totaling 3.64 million units. Overall shipments of that type of heat pumps have increased a lot in the past years, from 1.7 million units in 2012 to 4.33 million units in 2022. The total number of housing units with heat pumps for space heating also rose significantly, growing at an annual rate of roughly eight percent between 2019 and 2024.
How many U.S. homes have heat pumps?
Heat pumps are increasingly recognized for their energy efficiency and ability to provide both heating and cooling, making them an attractive option for homeowners. The share of homes with heat pumps installed varied by home type. In 2020, about 15 percent of single-family detached homes in the United States had some form of heat pump. Mobile homes had the highest share, with 30 percent of them equipped with heat pumps.
What is the leading HVAC solution in the U.S.?
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, and it refers to equipment that regulate the temperature, humidity, and air quality of buildings. Between 2003 and 2023, central air conditioners were the most popular space heating or cooling system in the United States, followed by air furnaces as the second most popular until 2019. However, air-source heat pumps surpassed air furnaces in shipments in 2020, with around 3.4 million units shipped that year. Those figures, however, do not include other HVAC equipment such as air cleaners and water heaters, which were also popular.
