Confirmed mpox cases in Latin America & Caribbean 2025, by country

As of 2025, Brazil was the country with the highest number of confirmed mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) cases in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the third most affected country in the world, with a total of 14,306 cases. Colombia followed, with 4,285 confirmed cases of the disease. Other affected countries in the region include Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.

What is mpox? 

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus, a species from the same genus as the virus that causes smallpox, but with a typically less severe symptomatology. Transmission of the disease tends to occur through proximity to an infected person, through contaminated materials, or close contact with infected animals. It presents itself with symptoms such as a rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes, and is usually treated with a focus on managing the patient’s symptoms. 

Global comparison 

As of May 2025, there were approximately 146,000 confirmed cumulative cases of mpox in the world, with the region of the Americas accounting for the highest number. Most of these cases were recorded during a global outbreak taking place between 2022 and 2023. Currently, an ongoing epidemic concerning a new mpox variant taking place mainly in Central Africa has been declared a public emergency of international concern by the WHO since August 2024.
