The adolescent birthrate worldwide has declined since the turn of the millennium. Particularly in South Asia, there was a sharp drop in the fertility rate among girls between 15 and 19 years of age from 2000 to 2006. Creating educational opportunities for girls and young women is key in reducing adolescent fertility, and the global literacy rate among youth has increased among both boys and girls since 2000. In 2022, the adolescent birth rate in West and Central Africa was almost 104.7 per 1,000 girls, the highest worldwide.
