In Belgium, the consumption of sleeping pills and tranquilizers increased from 2001 to 2008 and decreased in the following years. In 2008, over ** percent of the Belgian population consumed sleeping pills or tranquilizers. By 2018, this share had decreased to **** percent. Sleeping pills and tranquilizers are often prescribed to decrease anxiety and promote sleep. However, they are also known to be prescribed for but also for stress relief.
