Season 1: It all begins in the year 2030, where older Ted Mosby sits his children down to tell them the story of how he met their mother (obviously)

After this introduction, the setting then changes to present day (2005) city of New York, where 27-year-old Ted Mosby is found in his apartment. Later in the first episode, the show reveals that Ted lives with his best friend Marshall Erikson, along with Lily Aldrin, Marshall's girlfriend. Ted's despration for true love is introducted after Marshall and Lily finally become commited to getting married after eight years of dating. Like a fairy tale story, Ted then meets eyes with Ms. Robin Scherbatsky, a Canadian reporter who has somehow found her way into McLaren's Pub. From there, the two quickly grow their relationship.

After the first date, Ted reveals that he wants something serious, but the two found their differences when Robin tells him that she doesn't want any type of a serious relationship. Eventually, the two remain friends and that is when Ted's self-appointed best friend, Barney Stinson, wants Ted to be his "wingman" in picking up girls for one night stands. Ted's character traits are revealed after defying Barney's morals and decides to start his search for the 'perfect one'. A few episodes later, Robin realizes that she has feelings for Ted when he starts dating a girl that he met at a wedding, Victoria.

In time, Victoria reveals that she got offered a fellowship in the business of making pastries in Germany. Once Ted learns Robin has feelings for him after Victoria leaves him for Germany, he tells Robin he broke up with Victoria, even though he hasn't yet. Suddenly, as romantic tensions are getting high with Ted and Robin, Victoria calls and Robin answers, mistaking Ted's phone for her own. Meanwhile, Lily begins to wonder if she's missing out on any opportunies not becoming an artist. So then, she takes an art fellowship in San Francisco, leaving Marshall to be a single man in the process. As Robin finds a way in her heart to forgive Ted, the season ends with Ted officially dating Robin, but the last scene is Ted coming back to the apartment to find Marshall devastated by his break-up with Lily.
