How Figma helps you learn Figma

Want to learn Figma but not sure where to start? Meet our Product Education team—your guides, cheerleaders, and fellow learners helping you discover the joy of creating.
Every app, every website, every digital experience you love started out as an idea that was brought to life with design. But turning ideas into reality often requires learning new tools and skills—a process that can feel daunting when you’re just starting out. That’s where we come in.
As Figma’s Product Education team, we’re here to guide you through your Figma learning journey, breaking down barriers and helping you reach those ”aha” moments when things start making sense.
Building an educational ecosystem that evolves with you
Pro tip: If you’re a student or teacher, you may qualify for Figma’s Education plan, which gives you access to all Professional plan products and features for free.
Everyone’s learning path is unique. That’s why we create resources that support different learning styles and needs:
- The Help Center serves as your home base, with comprehensive feature guides and troubleshooting tips.
- YouTube tutorials bring concepts to life through practical examples.
- Interactive playground files let you experiment safely.
- Our newest addition, Figma Design for beginners, is a hands-on course that guides you through creating your own portfolio website.
Learning from our learners
Since we launched our first beginner course back in 2020, nearly three million people have watched the videos, with new learners joining every day. So, what inspired us to level up this course? You did!
As our community has grown, so has our approach to product education. Through your feedback, we’ve learned that you’re looking for:
- More opportunities for hands-on practice
- Clearer explanations of complex features
- Real-world examples that connect learning to doing
- A focus on free features, so everyone can join in
We took this feedback to heart and refreshed our beginner course to better support you as you get started with Figma. In this updated version, you’ll find feature deep dives to help tricky concepts click, guided explorations to flex your creativity, and tips and tricks from Figma pros—all culminating in a portfolio website template you can actually use (because learning should be fun and practical).

Turning knowledge into skill
Learning is better, together. Ask questions, get advice, and jam together with others on the Figma Forum.
So, you’ve completed the course—what’s next? We believe the best way to learn is by doing. But we also know that progress doesn’t always happen overnight, and it’s easy to feel frustrated when things don’t fall into place immediately. To keep you moving forward, here’s a few things to keep in mind the next time you go to open a Figma file:
Start small
Instead of jumping straight into designing a full website from scratch, focus on smaller, more manageable pieces. Try recreating simple UI elements—like an interactive button or loading animation. Bite-sized projects like these are great for practicing key concepts without feeling overwhelmed.
Practice often
Consistency is key. Find some tutorials that interest you and set a learning goal each week. Regular practice strengthens your skills, builds confidence, and helps you work more efficiently as you get comfortable with Figma’s tools and shortcuts.
Get inspired
Every designer draws inspiration from somewhere. Explore the Figma Community to browse real projects by other designers. Duplicate files and try recreating their designs to better understand what makes them effective. Studying the work of others will help you refine your tastes and develop your own design style.
Make mistakes
Don’t let the blank canvas intimidate you. Use that space to experiment, iterate, and see what works (and what doesn’t). Sometimes the best lessons come from unraveling what went wrong—and remember, you can always Cmd/Ctrl + Z
to undo.
Be kind to yourself
Learning something new—whether it’s Figma, design, or anything else—takes time, patience, and plenty of trial and error. If you’re feeling discouraged, remember: Every expert was once a beginner. Celebrate the small wins, take breaks when needed, and trust the process. One day, you’ll look back and be amazed at how far you’ve come.
