This paper describes a web-based environment for learning discrete simulation. The main goal of the paper is to foster the process of e-learning simulation by providing students and teachers with effective and comprehensive tools for creating, storing and executing discrete system simulation models. For these purposes the FONWEBGPSS application was developed and integrated into the e-learning system Moodle. The integration is implemented on three levels: users, processes and learning resources. The integration of users and processes is performed by synchronizing data in both systems. The integration of learning resources is performed by adjusting and implementing the IEEE LOM profile for learning simulation. In order to evaluate the impact of the proposed solution on the learning simulation outcome, research has been performed within the undergraduate course Simulation and simulation languages at the University of Belgrade. Research results indicate that students achieve better results in learning simulation when using FONWEBGPSS application integrated into the elearning system than learning in a traditional way.

Through comparative analysis and real-world examples—particularly in e-commerce and content platforms—we highlight strategies for selecting the appropriate storage solutions. Finally, we explore future trends and potential areas for further research, offering insights into how emerging technologies may shape the future of client-side storage.

Development of web application nowadays can hardly survive without object oriented approach except for the purpose of just information display. The complexity of application development and the need for content organization has raised the need for web application developers to embrace object oriented programming approach. This paper exposes the impact of object oriented programming on web application development. The exposition was done through a detailed study and analysis of information from secondary sources. The internet was usefully employed to access journal articles for both national and international sources. Our study enables web developers and designers to understand web application features, tools and methodologies for developing web application. This paper explores the application of Base Object Models (BOMs), an emerging XML standard, for rapidly composing simulations and simulation environments. We examine how pattern components, supported by the Interface (IF) BOM and how behavior components, supported by the Encapsulated (ECAP) BOM, can be used to enable simulation composability at design time and dynamically at run-time. We also explore the potential capabilities BOMs and other XML standards provide for the future of web-based simulation and training.

Co-browsing is a synchronous class of collaborative applications, which allows a group of users to surf the Web together. Such an application can be deployed in an education environment in several ways. One example of where it can be used would be in courses that are project-oriented. Students would be required to collectively research or explore information on the Web. This paper describes CoBrowser, a prototype co-browsing system that supports multiple groups, CoPointer, and chat sessions. In the past, co-browsing architecture has been based on either a proxy server or has required a special plug-in for the Web browser. The proxy server based approach is complex and is not scalable. The proposed CoBrowser addresses both of these limitations and works on any platform that supports a graphical Web browser with Java capability. Users of the system may potentially be geographically separated and working on different platforms. Current technologies allow physics educators the ability to combine traditional instruction with computational modeling. However, the implementation of a computational physics based modeling pedagogy requires a considerable programming effort for teachers and students who want to use this approach. This paper describes a pedagogy that limits the amount of programming when designing, implementing, distributing, and using computer models. It is based on the integration of the Easy Java Simulations modeling tool with the ComPADRE National Science Digital Library. • Easy Java Simulations (EJS) is free open source software that is designed to create interactive simulations in Java (applications and applets) without the necessity of prior programming knowledge.

The course "DSP Implementation of Communications Systems" provides undergraduate and graduate students with practical experience with communications concepts and algorithms using a TMS320C30 Evaluation Module (EVM) platform. This course is taught on a regular basis in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECPE) department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The course is based on an effective combination of classroom lectures and laboratory experiments that renders itself to encouraging student creativity. The classroom lectures provide material on communications systems from a theoretical perspective. The theoretical discussion is supplemented by laboratory experiments, which provide an exposure to digital implementation by a DSP. Despite the almost complete lack of research addressing a theoretical understanding of empathy or ways to increase human empathy, empathy is a central component of effective human communication. Seen as a key social science phenomenon, it is viewed, along with power, as an inextricable component of human dynamics, and, in its relationship with altruism, possibly plays a causal role. A problem with research on empathy has been a lack of conceptual clarity. Three Ways to improve empathetic listening are to avoid judgment, give the speaker time to speak without interruption, and focus on the speaker. Many of the helping professions have attempted training programs aimed at increasing the empathetic communication skills of practitioners in these fields. However, being told to listen empathetically is not the same as being taught to listen with empathy; and in crit:que of the empathy skills programs that are conducted within the helping professions, a significantly raised test score does not mean that empathy has been attained. Although empathetic communication is a complex subject matter, skills associated with empathy and active listening have been perceived as being more important than skills associated with critical or deliberative listening. This paper describes the development of an extendable integrated Grid enabled web-based simulation environment for computational science and engineering, called Computational Science and Engineering Online (CSE-Online, http://cse-online.net). CSE-Online is based on a unique client-server software architecture that can distribute the workload between the client and server computers in such a way as to minimize the communication between the client and server thus making the environment less sensitive to the network instability. Furthermore, the new software architecture allows the user to access data and resources on one or more remote servers as well as the computing grid while having the full capability of the web-services collaborative environment. It can be accessed anytime and anywhere from a web-browser connected to the network by either a wired or wireless connection. It has different modes of operations to support different working environments and styles. CSE-Online is evolving into a middleware that can provide a framework for accessing and managing remote data and resources including the computing grid for any domain, not necessarily within computational science and engineering.

Today Flexible manufacturing system is found to be more promising technology for mass production of the products as it consists flexible installations of workstation which are always ready to be changed as per the new products and demand. This is a very well known technology having a group of processing workstations interconnected by means of an automated material handling & storage system & controlled by integrated computer control system that is why the name given to it is 'flexible'.Flexibility has become a key factor for manufacturing to keep competitive. Software agent technology can be widely used to improve the flexibility of a plant and the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) used to control production. This paper introduces a multi-agent system design consisting of four types of agents covering the three layers of the plant automation pyramid from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP),Manufacturing Execution System (MES), to the field control layer. The architecture and the communication protocols of each agent are presented and the increase in flexibility for mass customized and highly dynamically changing products such as car manufacturing or manifold production are given. This paper is structured as the following: First the PABADIS'PROMISE system architecture is introduced. Then the architecture of each agent and the PABADIS'PROMISE MAS are presented. Finally, the communication protocols between the PABADIS'PROMISE agents are described.

Introduction Non-technical skills (NTS) are fundamental requirements for health professional graduates for safe and competent practice. Technology enhanced simulation, including virtual patients (VPs), is suggested to be effective in developing NTS.

Researchers and teacher educators have called for contextualizing the learning of pedagogy and content within the complex context of schools. This account provides an overview of a web-based simulation called Sim-School (c) that provides a realistic framework for students to contextualize curricular decisions, differentiate instruction and reflect on their practice. The Sim-School(c) project addresses the question: What new opportunities can technology provide to help education programs better prepare pre service teachers for the diversity of school settings and the array of challenges they will face in the future? Qualitative and quantitative results are discussed in the investigation of the project's effectiveness.

Computational hydrological models and simulations are fundamental pieces of the workflow of contemporary hydroscience research, education, and professional engineering activities. In support of hydrological modelling efforts, web-enabled tools for data processing, storage, computation, and visualization have proliferated. Most of these efforts rely on server resources for computation and data tasks, and client-side resources for visualization. However, continued advancements of in-browser, client-side compute performance present an opportunity to further leverage client-side resources. Towards this end, we present an operational rainfall-runoff model and simulation engine running entirely on the client-side using the JavaScript programming language. Creating comprehensive simulation models can be expensive and time consuming. This paper discusses our efforts to develop a general methodology that will allow users to quickly and efficiently create high fidelity simulation models by linking independent model objects distributed across the Internet or enterprise intranets. The result of linking these models is a model network that can be used to evaluate the aggregate performance of the system as well as investigate the interactions and performance of the individual component models. Our approach for creating a plug-and-play model integration environment is based on the principles of objectoriented programming and distributed object computing. Drawing on advances in language and network communication technology, we continue to refine an early proof-of-concept prototype called ENVISION (ENVironment for Integrating Simulation models Interactively Over Networks). The primary objective is to create a testbed system that will help us better understand how manufacturers might actually use this type of modeling facility if it was available.

Decision making is an inherent part of everyday work and learning processes. Superior decision outcomes can be achieved by structuring decision processes, encouraging domain experts to work collaborative1y, providing visualization ofdecisions as they develop, and providing decision makers with time and flexibility to better understand problems and to project outcomes. Evaluation of distributed synchronous virtual teamwork environments has eluded researchers. The theoretical foundation of this study was Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST) enhanced by a distributed cognition framework. Discourse analysis was used to explore ways to evaluate effectiveness of newly-formed time-constrained self-directed virtual teams using computer-mediated communication (CMC) to solve ill-defined problems. Measures ofwork process performance were percentages of meeting time devoted to Situation Assessment, Resource Coordination, Idea Generation, and Model Building. Ten measures of work outcome for each of six teams were taken to assess change in decision model quality over time. The data informing this study were obtained during an elective computer science course. The author's course design focused on human-computer interaction (HCI) aspects of use, design, and deployment of computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) and computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) systems. Participants were randomly assigned to teams that remained intact throughout the semester. Teams assumed various roles during policy and software-design scenarios. Networked TeamECTM decision-modeling software enabled team problem solving. NetMeeting provided connectivity, application sharing, and text chat for intra-team communication to simulate distributed virtual meetings. Discourse analysis revealed process performance vii patterns and development of shared mental models of problem solutions. The outcome variable (Model Score) improved over time for all teams, but degree of improvement varied greatly among teams. Qualitative analysis of group process variables indicated variance was due to how well teams understood scenario-role requirements and managed available resources. Time usage by process variable was analyzed to measure critical resource use to discover "best practice" guidelines for distributed synchronous teamwork. A Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) approach extended collaborative experiential learning to complex applied knowledge domains in order to improve problem solving and critical thinking skills. Constructivist leamer-centered course design facilitated a clear task focus enabling participants to learn new work practices applicable to classroom and workplace. viii

A tournament can be broadly defined as a procedure that ranks agents, where they exhibit their performance in a noisy environment. By observing the agents' performance, the organizer computes their ranking and rewards them according to the revealed ranking. The organizer's challenge is therefore to determine the optimal tournament format that identifies the best agent in the most effective fashion. Tournaments thus provide a natural framework for ranking and selection (R&S) via simulation, which represents a set of approaches developed to complement the modeling flexibility of simulation with the efficiency of statistical techniques for effective decision making. In this paper, following the introduction of a general framework to represent various tournament formats and to assess their predictive power, we will report preliminary experimental results on the effectiveness of tournaments in identifying the best simulated system with the desired probability of correct selection in the presence of costs.

Parallel and distributed simulation is concerned with the efficient execution of large-scale discrete event simulation models on multiprocessors and distributed platforms. After the development of World Wide Web (WWW), many efforts in parallel and distributed simulation have been made for modeling, particularly building simulation languages and creating model libraries that can be assembled and executed over WWW, and for analysis, particularly developing simulation optimization algorithms for parallel and distributed experimentation. These efforts have thus far produced mixed results. However, the recent advent of XML and web services technology provides enhanced opportunities for web-based distributed simulation. Especially, web services as a distributed information technology possess powerful capabilities for scalable interoperation of heterogeneous systems. This paper aims to develop and evaluate parallel and distributed simulation using the web services technology for efficient simulation execution. In particular, a prototype framework is implemented using web services for a simple shop floor simulation, where we focus on web-based simulation optimization through the distribution of simulation replications across different servers. The development of parallel and distributed simulation using web services will help to solve large-scale problems efficiently and guarantee interoperability among heterogeneous networked systems.

This work describes the Site-Specific System Simulator for Wireless System Design (S 4 W), a problemsolving environment (PSE) that integrates visualization and computational tools with a high-level graphical user interface. S 4 W improves the ability of wireless system engineers to design an indoor wireless system by encouraging them to think in terms of designing the system for optimal performance. Issues of computation management, data management, and location of resources are hidden from the user. The complex nature of data sets in the domain of wireless simulations calls for a customized set of visualization tools. Therefore, a number of ad hoc visualizations were developed for S 4 W. A study comparing the integrated system with an earlier, unintegrated version is presented. This helps to demonstrate the productivity gains that a PSE provides.

One of the new population-based optimization algorithms, named sine-cosine algorithm (SCA), is introduced to solve continuous optimization problems. SCA utilizes the sine and cosine functions to recast a set of potential solutions to balance between exploration and exploitation in the search space. Many researchers have developed and introduced a modified version of SCA to solve engineering problems, multi-objective version of SCA to solve multi-objective engineering design problems, and a binary version of SCA to deal with datasets. Our goal from this work to propose discrete SCA (DSCA) to solve the traveling salesman problem (TSP). The TSP is one of the typical NP-hard problems. DSCA works on the basic concepts of exploration and exploitation. To balance the exploration and exploitation in DSCA, it uses two different mathematical expressions to update the solutions in each generation. DSCA is combined with 2-opt local search method to improve exploitation. To enhance the exploration heuristic crossover, it is united with the proposed DSCA. A benchmarks problem selected from TSPLIB is used to test the algorithm, and the results show that the DSCA algorithm proposed in this article is comparable with the other state-of-the-art algorithms over a wide range of TSP.

Participants in circle rituals are exposed to other people looking at them and have little possibility to evade this surveillance. The others' looks constitute the self, but they also make one feel ashamed, which shows the objectivating nature of looks. Based on a contrasting analysis of the field notes from two ethnographic studies at different educational institutions, this contribution will focus on this paradox nature of the circle between subjectivation and de-subjectivation. The paper will examine the following questions: Which ways of the participants' (de-)subjectivation are made possible or are prevented by different ways of intervening practiced by education professionals? How do children and adolescents deal with the paradox nature of circle situations in the context of certain power relationships? The interpretation yields insights into the specific connection between the educational-material formation, disciplinary techniques, and power.

The past researches focused on the supply chain network that consists of factories, distribution centers and retailers for single product type. This research is required because the factory for single product type is advanced to reconfigurable type in order to produce various products, according to customers' various purchase forms and time. This research is also required because in the past researches, the material flows from factories to distribution centers and from distribution centers to retailers, but recently, there are material flows between distribution centers. The supply chain network in this research consists of reconfigurable manufacturing system, multi-layered distribution centers, and retailers. This work introduces a concept based on RESTful web service bringing a new layer into the architecture of web based simulation for the domain of modeling and simulation of physiological systems. The result is growing set of models and simulation application controllable by less powerful client devices but allowing long term simulation or identification of physiological system on remote servers or high performance computing centers.

The use of general descriptive names, registered names, trademarks, etc. in this publication does not inIply, even in the absence of a specific statement, that such names are exempt from the relevant protective.laws and regulations and therefore free for general use.

It is noted through reading the literature on simulation project life cycle that model development is the most time consuming stage. The findings of the questionnaire survey administered among practitioners and academics also support the findings of the literature survey. Further, the questionnaire survey suggests that conceptual model development is the most difficult task in developing the simulation model. Therefore, it is suggested to conduct further research in developing a methodology to accelerate the simulation model development process in the line of improving the understanding between the user and the modeller.

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In workflows for e-commerce and Web service applications, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying Quality of Service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of services. The management of QoS metrics directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Therefore, when services or products are created or managed using workflows, the underlying workflow system must accept the specifications and be able to estimate, monitor, and control the QoS rendered to customers. In this paper, we present a predictive QoS model that makes it possible to compute the quality of service for workflows automatically based on atomic task QoS attributes. To this end, we present a model that specifies QoS and describe an algorithm and a simulation system in order to compute, analyze and monitor workflow QoS metrics.

In recent years, the web browser has taken over many roles of the traditional operating system, such as acting as a host platform for web applications. Web browser storage, where the web applications can save data locally was one of the new functionalities added in HTML5. However, web functionality has increased significantly since HTML5 was introduced. As web functionality increased, so did the threats facing web users. One of the most prevalent threats was the user's privacy violations. This study examines the existing security issues related to the usage of web browser storage and proposes a new model to secure the data saved in the browser's storage. The model was designed and implemented as a web browser extension to secure the saved data. The model was experimentally demonstrated and the result was evaluated.

Since Ada Lovelace, using supercomputers has been much harder than building them. Compilers can only occasionally automatically parallelize interesting programs. Researchers spend years developing efficient code. We propose to turn the supercomputing norm on its head: we won't use software to adapt to hardware idiosyncrasies, instead we'll make software easy with sophisticated hands-off supercomputers. We want to let scientists concentrate on science, instead of scheduling loop iterations on parallel hardware. In this paper we propose an alternative: using our Teradactyl supercomputer architecture, based on our successful Levo processor (see http://www.jilp.org , Volume 5, August). We describe and analyze Teradactyl within.

The paper examines a form of training whose aim is to teach technologies for designing and styling responsive web page views and implementing web site events by students in an academic environment. In this form of training a role-play, taken by the practice of a software company is simulated. Data collection and evaluation of the results was carried out through qualitative methods of participant observation, survey, interview, and quantitative comparative analysis. The article analyzes in details the role-playing games, training content, stages of implementation and other aspects of the organization of experimental form of training in Web Design and Web Programming. Teaching, as a simulated role-playing game, is performed during six school hours, in two consecutive weeks and consists of four stages. In the role play, students apply knowledge and teamwork skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery etc. Each team is made up of five students with roles of manager, web designer, graphics designer, web stylist and web developer. The teams' organization is based on work products adaptation of the Rational Unified Process Methodology. The end product of the role-playing game is the development of a website by the team, while its final result for the learning process is the knowledge and skills acquired during formal training by the teacher, and the informal training that took place between the students during their teamwork.

The article analyzes in details the role-playing games, training content, stages of implementation and other aspects of the organization of experimental form of training in Web Design and Web Programming. This paper presents a system that generates web documents (courses, presentations or articles) enriched with interactive simulations and other hypermedia elements. Simulations are described using an object oriented continuous simulation language called OOCSMP. This language is complemented by two higher language layers (SODA-1L and SODA-2L). SODA-1L describes pages or slides, while SODA-2L builds courses, articles or presentations. A compiler (C-OOL) has been programmed to generate Java applets for the simulation models and HTML pages for the document pages. The paper focus on some new capabilities added to OOCSMP to handle different graphic detail levels of the system being simulated. Different views are shown as cascade windows, whose multimedia elements can be arranged and synchronized with the simulation execution. The new capabilities have been tested by extending a previously developed course on electronics.

The authors discuss the necessity of multiple flexible output forms in an educational Web simulation environment. Ideally, such an environment should allow the creation of visual, interactive simulations and their integration in the pages of the Web document being constructed. As a suitable candidate for this, the authors propose their system to generate documents for the Web that consists of three layers: continuous simulation language OOCSMP and its associated language layers SODA-1L and SODA-2L. OOCSMP and SODA are compiled into Java applets and HTML/VRML pages by a compiler called COOL. Different output forms can be combined to solve and show the results of a simulation problem. The authors propose a procedure to guide the construction of educational courses on technical or scientific subjects with their tools. This procedure is used to enhance an existing educational Web course with a new page showing the simulation of a robot arm Unimation PUMA260.

This paper describes some extensions added to the continuous simulation language OOCSMP to perform agent-oriented simulation. The extensions are tested by simulating the evolution of a colony of virtual ants (vants). In this simulation, each vant is modelled as an agent and is assigned a set of genes that control some aspects of its behaviour, such as its velocity, memory, communication abilities, scepticism, etc. Some emergent properties of the swarm of vants have been observed.

This paper describes the construction of virtual reality simulations for distance education trough Internet. This is accomplished by means of an object oriented continuous simulation language, called OOCSMP, and a Java generating compiler for this language called COOL. This compiler is also able to create VRML worlds. The behaviour of the VRML world is specified in the OOCSMP models. Change of simulation parameters is possible at run time by means of a Java interface, generated by the compiler. An example of the simulation of the inner Solar System is presented.

Nowadays, Comenius's old motto-"schola ludus" ("school as play") has found a modern use in interactive educational programs using simulation games. Educational applications using simulation games, available through the web, represent a new educational aid, very effi cient from the didactic point of view in explaining complex pathophysiological processes. However, the process of creating them is not very easy-it requires multidisciplinary team cooperation and the use of suitable object-oriented development tools.The development of multimedia simulation games is a combination of research and development work. The research work consists in formalizing physiological reality by designing mathematical models, while development work is the very creation of multimedia simulators, which make use of the mathematical models designed. Creative interconnection of the various professions and various object-oriented tools and applications is the key to success. A scenario of good quality, created by an experienced pedagogue, still remains the foundation of the e-learning program. The creation of animated images is the responsibility of artists who create interactive animation in Adobe Flash or in Microsoft Expression Blend environment. The artists use the Animtester software tool developed by us, to create and test animations to be subsequently controlled by the simulation model. The core of the simulators is the simulation model, created in the environments of special development tools designated to create simulation models (we have used Simulink from Mathworks). Now, we use a very effi cient object-oriented environment, which utilizes the Modelica simulation language. We are working on the Modelica language compiler to compile into the .NET component form, which, together with the differential equations solver implemented on the .NET platform as well, shall serve as the "data layer" of the simulator with the implemented model. The user interface is connected with the simulation model using the data binding concept, which provides the intelligent automatic propagation of values between the layers, thus data transfer. We use hierarchical state automatons to design the inner application logic (the automatons make it possible to remember the relevant model context and the user interface context). We have also developed a visual environment (Statecharts editor), which allows creating the graphic design of the automatons, generating a code, and debugging them. The resulting simulator is a web application for the Silverlight platform, which makes it possible to distribute the simulator as a web application running directly in the internet browser (even on computers with various operating systems-it is only necessary that the relevant plugin is installed in the browser).

Design Decisions for warehouse applications require large amounts of data. In addition, these date typically have complex interrelations and constraints that must be represented for the design process to be successful. Object technology and database technology offer a way to manage design data and also provide a platform for integrating it into applications to automate the design process. This session will focus on the use of these technologies to support warehouse design. .
