The Miracles of Sts Cyrus and John, together with the encomium that precedes them, offer a wide range of uses of the theme of the sea. The sea is the geographical setting for the sanctuary in the region of Alexandria, Canopus and Herakleion. It is also a source of pleasure, particularly swimming, which is rare in Byzantine literature. The sea is a hub of commerce, but it is also a place of danger. It is a horizon for contemplation and observation, and through its waves, it symbolises the infinite and the innumerable. Finally, the sea, with its ideological symbolism, is the space that swallowed up the pagan world and gave rise to the new Christian world.

Les événements ayant conduit à l'effondrement de l'Empire byzantin sont communément appelés « les conquêtes de l'islam ». Mais cela soulève plusieurs questions : ces conquérants étaient-ils musulmans ? Étaient-ils arabes originaires de la péninsule arabique ? Et plus fondamentalement, peut-on vraiment parler de conquêtes ? Ces questions, qui peuvent sembler surprenantes, ont été revues et corrigées par les chercheurs au cours des vingt dernières années, conduisant à des conclusions qui bousculent nos conceptions traditionnelles. Avant tout, clarifions deux notions importantes qui pourraient prêter à confusion. Le terme arabe désignait à l'époque une personne parlant la langue arabe, tout comme un Grec parle grec ou un Syrien parle syriaque, ou encore vit dans l'aire culturelle et géographique de la Grande Syrie. On peut supposer que, dès le VIIe siècle, les individus les plus instruits parmi les arabophones maîtrisaient aussi le syriaque et le grec. Par exemple, les habitants des royaumes Ghassanides, Lakhmides et Nabatéens parlaient arabe. Les peuples des royaumes de Himyar, de Saba, de Qataban et d'Aksoum utilisaient différents dialectes arabes, écrits dans une écriture distincte de celle utilisée en Syrie. Cependant, il est important de noter que le terme arabe à cette époque n'a aucun lien avec les populations actuelles de la péninsule Arabique. Quant au concept de conquête, il implique généralement l'entrée de soldats dans un territoire ou une ville, accompagnée de sièges, massacres, pillages et prise de butin au profit de des brsoins des conquérants. Or, selon les preuves archéologiques, de tels événements ne se sont pas produits dans la partie orientale de l'Empire byzantin, malgré les récits traditionnels

In recent years, critical studies of the Quran and early Islam have experienced significant growth. For historians, non-Islamic sources, as well as archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological, and numismatic evidence, provide far more reliable testimony for understanding this period than oral traditions transmitted across generations. Christian chronicles written by Byzantine authors contemporary with the conquests, who were often direct witnesses to the events, serve as invaluable sources. These accounts, free from apologetics and anachronisms, are far more reliable than Islamic traditions written down at least two centuries after the events.
As for the concept of conquest, it generally implies the entry of soldiers into a territory or city, accompanied by sieges, massacres, pillaging, and the seizure of spoils for the conquerors' benefit. Yet, according to archaeological evidence, such events did not occur in the eastern part of the Byzantine Empire, despite traditional accounts of grand, heroic battles. Furthermore, the conquerors typically did not settle in the territories they overtook. These "conquests" were instead preceded by the gradual weakening of the two empires of the time: the Byzantine and Sassanid Empires, both exhausted by incessant wars that had destroyed their administrative systems, particularly tax collection. In the end, there was no violent conquest but rather a shift in power, with no evidence of significant resistance.
Moreover, it seems that the conquerors did not originate from the Arabian Peninsula but from the Syro-Christian world. Egypt, North Africa, and Spain, for instance, were conquered by soldiers recruited from regions already under their control. These conquerors were not Muslims; they were Christians belonging to various theological traditions prevalent in this Syro-Christian world. Historical sources describe them by various names, reflecting their affiliation with diverse cultural and religious groups within Greater Syria.

Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą przybliżenia specyfiki monoteletyzmu pod względem merytoryczno-terminologicznym i przedstawienia jego kluczowych twierdzeń. W artykule omawiany jest związek między poglądem o jedności osoby Chrystusa a przekonaniem o jedności Jego woli. Są również przedstawiane racje za utrzymywaniem przez monoteletów swoistej terminologii, a także wyjaśniana jest istota monoteletyzmu.

The only epigram of Sophronius of Jerusalem (Anthologia Palatina 1,123) about the Calvary stone in Jerusalem, will be studied in this paper in relation with other poetic texts of the same author : the Anacreontica 20, 18 and 14 (and the epigram Anthologia Palatina 1,10 not written by Sophronius). Sophronius' epigram will be seen as a counter-epic text inspired by Homer.

English translation of this epigram of the Anthologia Palatina 1,123 (by Alan Cameron, The Epigrams of Sophronius, Classical Quarterly, 33/1, 1983,  p. 291) : "Thrice-blessed rock, who didst receive the blood that issued from God, the fiery children of Heaven guard thee around, and Kings, inhabitant of Earth, sing thy praise."

This paper focuses on the image of the Jews in  Sophronius of Jerusalem's "Miracles of the Holy Cyrus and John", on the use of a "magic" pig and on a sand baptism of a Jew. It deals also with a group of Palestinian thieves of different religions (including Jews) in the "Spiritual Meadow" of John Moschus. This article faces also the issue of "Kulturkampf" between Jews and Christians and that of forced baptism of Jews.

This paper deals with the masters and the disciple of Maximus the Confessor. It shows that Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite is probably not the "Blessed Elder" of the Mystagogia of Maximus the Confessor but probably a literary trick to legitimate the text. The "Blessed Elder" seems rather to refer to a master in the style of monastic oral tradition. For Maximus contrasts oral teaching and book tradition.
Anastasius, an "African" monk,  the pupil of Maximus the Confessor,, produces instead a book (libellon) as a result of the master to disciple relationship.Rather than Pantaleon, named in the Vita syriaca of Maximus written by George of Reshaina, Sophronius of Jerusalem appears to be the real master of Maximus, as long as Sophronius is a "sophist" (that is a teacher), a monk and the advocate of truth (as a bishop)

This is the first Anacreontic poem by St Sophronius with the rest currently in translation as part of the FULL works of the saint.

The saints works have been stored and secured in the private library of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. It will be the first time these works are published in English and although the Greek was published hundreds of years ago, it is only available in rare collections not accessible by the public.

Pour l'étude du culte des saints, l'importance des collections de miracles a été reconnue depuis longtemps, mais on a moins souligné peut-être ce que pouvait apporter l'histoire de leur texte. Son lien avec l'histoire du culte est pourtant plus évident et plus intime que pour d'autres oeuvres hagiographiques. La présence de ces collections en effet, complètes ou non, accompagnant une Passion du thaumaturge, est souvent la marque d'un intérêt spécial pour le saint et elle transforme le manuscrit qui les porte en un monument intéressant la diffusion de son culte. C'est ce que nous tenterons de montrer ici en prenant comme fil directeur l'histoire des Miracles des saints Cyr et Jean par Sophrone de Jérusalem 1 , que nous comparerons, sur certains points, à l'histoire d'autres collections de miracles de saints martyrs. I. Les MIRACLES DES SAINTS CYR ET JEAN La collection des Miracles des saints Cyr et Jean par Sophrone est bien connue grâce à l'édition de N. Fernández Marcos et aux travaux de Jean Gascou 2. Écrite en Égypte en 610 ou peu après par un auteur dont les saints viennent de guérir miraculeusement les yeux malades, il s'agit d'une oeuvre longue et savante, avec un prologue (Prothéôria 3), 1. Jelen tanulmány annak vizsgálatát tűzi ki célul, hogy miként viszonyul egymáshoz öt, VII. századi bizánci szerző álláspontja a Krisztusban lévő működésről és akaratról ama teológiai-egyházpolitikai vita során, melyet a dogmatörténet a monenergizmus és különösen a monothelétizmus elleni küzdelemnek nevez. E vita közvetlen kontextusához hozzátartozik a Bizánc egységét biztosítani kívánó császári teológia és birodalmi politika is. A vizsgált szerzők és szövegek kronológiai rendben a következők: 1. Kyros alexandriai pát-riárka Kilenc fejezete, mely az egyiptomi monofizita egyházzal való kiegyezés alapja volt (633); 2. Sergios konstantinápolyi pátriárka levele Honorius római pápához, amely ugyanez évre datált egyházi vezetői határozatának ('pséphos') lényegét is tartalmazza (633); 3. Honorius pápa válaszlevele Sergioshoz, amely csak korabeli görög fordításban maradt fenn, latin eredetije elveszett (633); 1 4. This paper is a refutation of some of D. Olster's readings of Sophronius in his book : "Roman Defeat, Christian Response and Literary Construction of the Jew" , Philadelphia, 1994. Between the Alexandrian period of Sophronius (Anacreontica, Panegyric of S. Cyr and John) and the Hierosolymitan one (On the feast of the Cross) there is no change but the one and same image of the Jews. They are seen as the eternal and mystical enemies of the Christians, replaying ever and ever the same drama of the crucifixion, even in the time of the fall of Jerusalem in 614. The criticism of Sophronius of Jerusalem against Jews appears to be seemingly a response to Jewish propaganda against Christianity. Jews might have proved the anger of God against Christians by the Roman defeat in 614 AD and the loss of Jerusalem, sign of the wrath of God against a supposed christian "idolatric" veneration of the Holy Cross. Sophronius returns probably the idea against the Jews : refusing to venerate the Holy Cross, Jews would have arouse the God's wrath. Jews seem so to be the beginning and the end of a mystical drama that began with the Crucifixion of Christ and will end with the ever lasting supposed shame of Jews.

David Olster oppose les "Poèmes anacréontiques" et les écrits de Sophrone avant son accession au patriarcat de Jérusalem en 634 à ses sermons hiérosolymitains postérieurs. Dans les premiers, la défaite et la victoire des “Romains” face aux Perses seraient traitées selon la logique habituelle que la défaite est due aux péchés et appelle à la conversion. Dans les seconds, le patriarche inventerait une nouvelle apologétique pour soutenir le moral de ses ouailles. Mais en fait, dès sa période alexandrine, dans le Panégyrique des saints Cyr et Jean, Sophrone affirme que “le règne de Dieu était ôté aux juifs et donné aux Gentils”. Cette étrange affirmation semble associer règne de Dieu et christianisme et non pas règne de Dieu et empire romain. Dans le Poème anacréontique 18, le Christ conduit Chosroès II à piller Jérusalem en châtiment de la mort du Christ à Jérusalem. La ville sainte tout comme les juifs sont les personnages immuables d’une histoire mystique. Ce ne sont pas les habitants chrétiens qui sont châtiés dans la ruine de Jérusalem mais les “Hébreux” impies envers la Croix. Cette honte qui couvre les juifs “éternels” se retrouve après 634 dans le sermon Sur la fête de la sainte Croix, mais elle devient eschatologique. Il n’y a donc pas de rupture entre les écrits de Sophrone d’avant et d’après 634, mais une sorte de combat apocalyptique qui oppose éternellement juifs et chrétiens autour de Jérusalem.
