La abundancia alimentaria no garantiza justicia ni sostenibilidad. Este trabajo cuestiona la idea de que más producción equivale a mejor alimentación, y propone pensar el sistema alimentario desde sus tensiones éticas, ecológicas y sociales. Comer no es solo consumir: es participar en una red de decisiones que afectan cuerpos, territorios y futuros.

This research aims to explore the contribution of remittance, inflation, and foreign direct investment (FDI) to GDP growth in Nepal from 2000 to 2023. Remittance inflows constitute a large portion of the Nepalese economy, but their contribution to long-term GDP growth is not well understood. Inflation consistently poses a challenge, compounded with price shocks and intrinsic structural weaknesses. Despite its insignificance, FDI is considered a source of future economic growth. Adopting a quantitative approach with a toolset consisting of descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regressions, in an investigation of causality between these and GDP growth, the analysis identifies poor correlations between GDP growth and remittance inflows and between inflation and GDP growth, and a positive, yet poor, one with FDI. The outcomes of a modelled regression, in terms of factors contributing towards GDP growth, reveal them to contribute towards explaining little variance, necessitating considerable interventions in terms of policy in such a scenario. Thus, it is advised that such policies must be adopted in an attempt to direct remittance inflows towards productive sectors, manage inflation through monetary intervention, and promote governance structures in an attempt to draw in FDI, guided through the observations in this analysis.

Dit komt ook tot uiting in deze bundel artikels, gepubliceerd door de Vlaams-Nederlandse Vereniging voor Nieuwe Geschiedenis, opgericht door historici die verbonden zijn aan Nederlandse en Vlaamse universiteiten.

FASHION TRENDS IN ČAČAK IN THE 1930s
Based on advertisements and promotional texts from the Čačak press in the 1930s, which vividly illustrate clothing styles and fashion trends of the time, this study partially reconstructs the fashion practices of the city's residents. As advertisements and announcements provide valuable insight into the economic, social, and cultural conditions of the period, they serve as a significant source of information for studying the daily life of the population. Although the economic crisis weakened citizens' purchasing power, negatively affecting the survival of crafts and trade, stores in Čačak during the 1930s were well-stocked with diverse and high-quality goods that needed to be presented to potential buyers. For this purpose, advertising in contemporary newspapers was of great importance to businesses, utilizing various advertising techniques—most commonly emphasizing affordability, in line with the economic and social circumstances, and the inevitable use of superlative forms in promotional texts.

The fulfilled needs demonstrate the welfare level. One way to know the level of community needs is through a pattern of household expenditure. The basic needs of society generally are transportation and food. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences between single and married status in consuming foods and transportation. The method use in this study is quantitative research method. The data collected randomly from 100 respondents, based on their marital status. The married respondents are 19 while the single ones are 81. The analytical method used in this study is independent sample T-Test using SPSS V. 21.The results showed that the single and married respondents was not different with a sig. Value >0. 05 which are 0. 764 and 0. 838 but the t-test for equality means was negative so it indicates that group of married people have more demand than group single for both products, food and transportation.

This paper analyzes the dynamic interplay between democracy and capitalism in the 21st century, investigating the impact of economic power on political freedom and the reciprocal effects. It contends that while capitalism has historically supported democratic institutions, modern trends such as economic disparity, corporate dominance, and technological advancements pose serious threats to democratic government. The study examines these processes using theoretical frameworks and empirical case studies, ultimately providing policy recommendations to fortify democratic institutions against capitalist pressures.

This research examines factors that affect households' consumption pattern in Kano metropolis. Kano metropolis has its unique socioeconomic and cultural settings which affect consumption activities of households. The study employs data gathered by means of questionnaire surveys carried out in Kano metropolis in 2023. The data was analysed using Tobit and exponential regression models. The findings of the study show that consumer loans and social security have positive impacts on household consumption. The results also show that food expenditure dominated consumption expenditure pattern, while cost of energy has negative effects on consumption. These findings have implications on government efforts to fight poverty, ensure food security and provide affordable energy to households. Therefore, government shall revitalize consumer loan schemes, boost assistance to the poor and provide cheaper alternatives means of energy such as renewable energy. Through understanding of factors that affect consumption and households' welfare, policymakers, researchers and stakeholders can develop good policies and strategies to deal with the challenges of poverty and welfare of households in Kano state and Nigeria at large.

O objetivo desse artigo é apresentar os principais resultados de uma pesquisa teórica e empírica, embasada na Teoria das Representações Sociais (MOSCOVICI, 1961), realizada com o propósito de investigar as percepções de crianças de cinco a seis anos sobre as representações de infância presentes em três publicidades. A pesquisa empírica contou com duas entrevistas semi-estruturadas aplicadas individualmente com seis crianças (três meninos e três meninas).  Busquei, assim, colocar as crianças no papel de sujeitos da pesquisa.
A primeira vez que tive contato com a questão da infância na publicidade foi em uma reportagem que discutia sobre o projeto de lei 5291/01 que
proíbe a publicidade dirigida ao público infantil. Essa reportagem sobre o
projeto de lei me fez questionar sobre a real percepção que as crianças têm sobre as publicidades dirigidas a elas. Passei dias me perguntando se não seria interessante pesquisar como as crianças se relacionam com aquelas representações de infância apresentadas na publicidade. Ou seja, pesquisar se as crianças percebem os elementos simbólicos que caracterizam as representações; se as atividades que os personagens executam na publicidade fazem parte do cotidiano das crianças “de verdade”.
Nesse artigo serão apresentados os resultados obtidos através da análise e interpretação das falas das crianças colhidas na pesquisa empírica que
deu origem ao Trabalho de Conclusão apresentado à Universidade Federal de Santa Maria sob o título de: “’Agora eu já entendi tudo’: a percepção de crianças de cinco a seis anos sobre as representações de infância na publicidade”.

This paper is a response to and offers supporting analysis for Tony Atkinson's and Thomas Piketti's claim that only rigorous Government intervention can slow the pace of the otherwise ineluctable growth in wealth inequality,which if left unchecked, is likely to have catastrophic consequences for society. The paper shows analytically, through simulation that an unequal distribution of wealth (typically the norm in industrial or post industrial society) according to the Pareto curve will, over time, lead to further massive inequalities of wealth.

The Covid-19 Pandemic has bought a paradigm shift in the buying behaviour of the consumers. It is responsible for breaking the stereotype in the market trend. This paper tries to understand the change in consumer buying behaviour during lockdown caused due to Covid-19 pandemic. The traditional offline shopping habits of the consumers was replaced by online shopping. Also, the purchasing preference of consumers was clustered towards the essential items like, grocery, green grocery, toiletries and medicines. All other items were considered as secondary importance. It was also seen that the usual attraction of consumers with reference to promotional offers and discounts on products did not affect their buying behaviour. The results of the study revels that consumers preferred buying essential items mostly through online mode of shopping.

The paper shows analytically through simulation that an unequal distribution of wealth (typically the norm in industrial or post industrial society) according to the Pareto curve will, over time, lead to further massive inequalities od wealth. However a small redistribution of wealth from the very richest will have the effect of slowing inequality growth. The simulation analysis is supported by an analysis of wealth inequality growth in the USA and UK between 1950 and 2020. Menstruation is a natural biological process for women, yet even in modern times, menstrual challenges remain prevalent. Many women face issues with sanitary pad absorption, leading to leaks that stain clothing or bedsheets and cause disproportionate inconvenience and cost compared to men. This study aims to investigate and improve the absorbent materials used in sanitary pads, an essential product for women’s daily lives. By examining different materials and their absorption performance, our research seeks to provide insights that can enhance the effectiveness and comfort of sanitary products, ultimately alleviating women’s menstrual-related difficulties.

A green economy, according to the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program), is one that "improves human well-being and social fairness while considerably lowering environmental dangers and ecological scarcities" (UNEP, 2011, p. 16). A green economy is a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially inclusive economy, to put it simply. In a green economy, public and private investment drive income and employment growth by reducing carbon emissions and pollution, improving energy and resource efficiency, and preventing the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. There are numerous environmental difficulties and problems in India today. Pollution of the air, water, and waste, a loss in agricultural production, depletion of natural resources, and progressive deterioration of environmental quality. However, India still has a long way to go in addressing its environmental challenges and increasing its environmental quality to match that of developing nations. Pollution and depletion of natural resources are both a serious concern and an opportunity for India.

The preparation of this Elgar Encyclopedia of Food and Society has provided an opportunity to take stock of what can be a bewildering array of ideas, materials, topics and examples, to highlight key connections between different themes and approaches, and to provide some signposting towards future directions for research into food and society. In this brief introduction, we contextualise the volume’s entries by commenting on how food-society relationships have been studied, the approach and underlying principles that informed our own thinking, our aims and intentions for the encyclopedia and the process of putting the volume together, and, finally, how the encyclopedia can be used.

The communities’ economic link to the Forest Reserve El Montuoso (FRM) was analyzed using a stra-tified cluster sampling. Communities depend on the direct benefits from this ecosystem for its survival, through the availability (87 per cent of the homes) and use of their lands for agricultural purposes (74 per cent), in rice and corn crops for self-consumption, and livestock and poultry production (76 per cent), mainly chickens and pigs. Crop and livestock farming allow residents to have access to unpaid jobs or self-employments (53 per cent) and to paid jobs, mainly for temporary farmworkers. Likewise, 67 per cent of the families generate monetary re-venues through the sale of products, mainly livestock. The families’ income indicators are all relatively low evidencing the high state of poverty of these communities. Een belangrijk fenomeen in de periode vanaf de late 17de eeuw is de verspreiding van de warme dranken thee, koffie en chocolade. In dit artikel is nagegaan hoe exotische warme dranken zich verspreidden in het landelijke Hingene (Bornem), gelegen in het zuiden van de Nederlanden (België).

Government expenditure plays a strategically important role in economic growth and development of nations. Its contributions includes boosting economic growth, employment generation, increase in income, higher standard of living, reduction in income inequalities, increasing private initiative and boosting of regional balance. This paper studies the effects of government expenditure on inflation, unemployment, consumption and investment by analyzing four different models. The paper asks the question of what happens after government expenditure? Is the effect of government expenditure on selected variables of interest positive or negative? What shall government do to ensure that its own expenditure profile is development oriented not otherwise? The methods of analysis used for the study are ARDL Error Correction Model and Granger causality test using data for the period 1981 to 2020. Diagnostic tests that include lag order selection test and ADF stationarity test were conducted. The long run results show that both recurrent and capital expenditures have negative effects on inflation but positive effects on investment. The results also show that capital expenditure contribute to reducing unemployment. The long run result also show negative effects of both types of expenditures on consumption. But the results of the short run analysis show that both types of expenditures have positive effects on consumption. They also have positive effects on inflation in the short run. Recurrent expenditure reduces unemployment in the short run. But, government expenditure did not influence investment in the short run.

El artículo científico realiza una revisión sistemática de la literatura sobre innovación tecnológica y sustentabilidad utilizando un enfoque bibliométrico. A través del análisis de 2863 artículos científicos extraídos de la base de datos Web of Science, se examinan las tendencias, enfoques metodológicos, áreas temáticas, autores más influyentes y vacíos en la literatura. Los resultados revelan un crecimiento exponencial en la producción científica en los últimos años, con un enfoque creciente en la integración de la innovación tecnológica para promover la sustentabilidad. Las palabras clave más frecuentes en estos estudios incluyen innovación, sustentabilidad, tecnología y gestión. El análisis bibliométrico permitió identificar tres áreas temáticas principales: la innovación, el marco conceptual y las dinámicas de transición. Estos resultados sugieren la importancia de políticas y estrategias que promuevan la innovación sostenible, subrayando la necesidad de una investigación continua en este campo para apoyar el desarrollo de soluciones tecnológicas que integren aspectos sociales y ambientales. Además, se destaca la complejidad en la cuantificación del valor social y ambiental de estas innovaciones, el cual se manifiesta con el tiempo, lo que añade un desafío adicional para la investigación y la implementación de políticas efectivas​.

This study examines the sustainability strategies implemented by SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic in the context of emerging space tourism. Based on a review of the academic literature on the companies' sustainable practices and policies as well as consultation with the companies' official websites, an analysis of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability is conducted to assess the commitment of the leading space tourism companies to cost reduction, social inclusion and environmental impact mitigation. The study concludes that while notable progress has been made, achieving comprehensive sustainability in space tourism requires a more holistic and collaborative approach that equitably addresses the dimensions of sustainability.

This paper analyzes the administrative strategies of large firms in Mexico according to the categories of socioecological strategies, organizational resilience strategies, and sustainability strategies. The study identifies the twenty highest-net-grossing privately-held firms in Mexico according to their net income as reported online and in annual reports. We use qualitative methodologies to analyze the sustainability sections of these annual reports to document each firm's socioecological, organizational resilience, and sustainability strategies. Finally, we present conclusions regarding the relationship between these three strategies of socioecology, resilience, and sustainability in the firms analyzed. The study's results identify the presence of socioecology, resilience, and sustainability as administrative strategies according to the firms' axes the actions the firms are implementing, and the central concepts in which the firms base their presentation of the strategy.

The practice and consumption of artistic activities have benefits for higher education students in Mexico and the world, in addition to contributing to sustainable development in different ways. The objective of this research was to analyze the advertising of artistic activities and their problems in a public university in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. This work consisted of a case study with the participation of 35 students in different areas of science through focus groups, as well as the implementation of the non-participant observation technique of seven artistic events held at the institution. The main results showed problems in the use of digital social networks as a means of advertising and some weaknesses in print and word-of-mouth advertising media. The need to understand the algorithms of social networks, mainly Facebook, is concluded, as well as the use of social links for advertising through the actors in the student's environment.

In the era of digital transformation, the shift towards a cashless economy has accelerated the adoption of plastic money-primarily debit and credit cards-as instruments of financial transactions. This research paper critically examines the role of plastic money in promoting financial inclusion in India, with a particular focus on its reach among economically weaker and previously unbanked sections. The study evaluates usage patterns, access, and acceptance of debit and credit cards in urban and rural settings, and assesses whether these tools truly contribute to bridging the financial divide. Using a combination of primary data and secondary sources, the paper highlights the key challenges-such as digital illiteracy, infrastructure gaps, and trust issues-that hinder inclusive financial participation through plastic money. The findings suggest that while debit and credit cards have increased accessibility to formal banking systems, their impact on comprehensive financial inclusion remains limited without parallel investments in awareness, education, and digital infrastructure.

A investigação examina como se articulam as relações entre o campo publicitário, as práticas de consumo e a escolha dos cursos de graduação em Publicidade e Propaganda, por parte dos jovens de duas instituições de ensino do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, a Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM), de Porto Alegre, e a FACCAT, de Taquara. Para isso, utiliza como aporte teórico a abordagem sociocultural do consumo, de Nestor García Canclini (1991 e 1993), a partir de uma releitura, na qual foi incluída a produção teórica de Pierre Bourdieu (1992 e 1998b), através das noções de habitus, capital e campo, além de outros autores. Contemplando uma estratégia multimetodológica, o estudo desvelou os elementos responsáveis pela escolha dos jovens no ingresso da profissão, destacando as representações construídas via consumo midiático, o processo de juvenilização e as condições socioculturais a que estão sujeitos.

Traditionally, sociology has focused on the middle and working classes, but the disproportionate influence of the super-rich calls for a deeper analysis. This Introduction highlights how this elite holds significant control over economic, cultural, and political resources, influencing global social dynamics. Additionally, it discusses how the wealth of the super-rich translates into political power and how their consumption choices impact the environment and society. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of examining the origins, reproduction, and responsibility of this elite to better understand contemporary inequalities. After a broad theoretical introduction, the article provides an overview of the three contributions to the Special Issue by Khan and O'Brien, Mears and Delpierre, and offers a perspective on the most relevant issues related to the role of the super-rich and the dynamics that sustain their privileges and call for their responsibilites.

O presente trabalho realiza um estudo sobre o fenômeno do consumo de skins nos jogos League of Legends e League of Legends: Wild Rift, buscando compreender de que forma as dinâmicas de sociabilidade digital entre jogadores(as) são influenciadas pelo consumo desses itens. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica sobre os temas e feita a coleta de dados quantitativos, a partir de um formulário online, com jogadores(as) brasileiros(as) de todo o território nacional para identificar as principais motivações que os(as) levam a adquirir bens virtuais desse tipo e de que forma o consumo de skins é utilizado como agente mediador das sociabilidades estabelecidas entre os sujeitos nestes dois jogos da empresa norte-americana Riot Games.

Este trabalho busca apresentar a relação entre fãs e idols tailandeses através da shippagem de atores que protagonizam casais homossexuais nas séries conhecidas como BL (Boys Love). Portanto, inicialmente abordamos o fenômeno da cultura pop da Tailândia, conhecido como T-Wind; em seguida apresentamos como idols tailandeses são fabricados; para, enfim, explicar como funciona a shippagem do casal de idols (khu jin).

Traditional foods are a special category of products that, besides the intrinsic value of preserving and continuing regional and national customs in today's context, must meet consumer demands, particularly in terms of food safety and nutritional value. Increasing the production of this category of food under these conditions becomes a problem for producers, especially small ones. In this context we chose the case study for the identification of the main economic operators and of the fruit-growing areas in Romania, favoring the obtaining of raw materials with special qualities in order to process them. The production of plum jam, the process of obtaining jams traditional products, the quality of the final products and their main features have been analyzed in this research article. The conclusion was that processing and certification as a traditional "plum jam-magiun" product meets consumer safety and security requirements.

Beirut's policies in the last decade or more contributed to the creation of a highly car-dependent city with almost 2 million vehicles dominating the streets and causing high traffic congestion. Yet, Beirut's informal street markets carry the potential for the enhancement of a liveable sustainable city, which previous studies have overlooked. To approach this problem, urban planners need to rethink and restructure the existing street network in Beirut to decrease the distances between the suburbs and the centre of the city. The aim of this research is to formulate a rational system that assigns markets and pedestrian areas to certain streets where cars can have no or limited access. This system adopts a parametric tool based on fuzzy logic which analyzes the current street network and filters out streets that fulfil certain criteria such as parking availability and proximity to public transportation, hence decreasing centrality in the city. This method is applied to both fixed and temporary food markets that are characterized by highly dynamic pedestrian movement. The final results show a series of maps of Beirut with different scenarios identifying streets that fulfil the defined criteria as potential street markets, which can be the blueprint for further analysis of street and transportation planning creating more liveable and sustainable places.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan efektivitas media audio-visual sebagai alat memperlancar kemampuan menyimak peserta pembelajaran BIPA. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa asing pelajar BIPA tingkat dasar di UPT Bahasa Universitas Sebelas Maret, yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Setiap kelompok terdiri atas 30 orang, yang di pilih secara acak. Pengolahan data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan melalui pengujian sifat data, uji gain, dan hipotesis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan hasil dari kelas mahasiswa asing pelajar BIPA tingkat dasar di UPT Bahasa Universitas Sebelas Maret antara mahasiswa yang menggunakan media audio visual dibandingkan dengan mahasiswa yang menggunakan metode konvensional. Consumption spaces are culturally allegedly equally accessible to all, based on a person's ability to spend money. Critical race studies in a North American context have shown, however, that consumption spaces are highly racialized. Racism in consumption spaces in northern Europe is an under-researched area. This article is based on interviews with individuals racialized as non-White about experiences of everyday racism in consumption places in Sweden. It aims to fill this research gap and answer the questions of how people respond to experiences of racism in consumption spaces, and how we can understand the spatial aspects of racism that are acted out and reproduced in spaces of consumption. As consumption is a central part of urban life, this understanding helps to further reveal the depth of social inequalities that in turn reinforce patterns of urban segregation and social spatial division. Theoretically, the spatialization of everyday racism and the notion of color-blindness that is prevalent in Sweden underlines how these experiences shape urban practices such as spatial exclusion and self-constraint.

Este artigo examina a ação publicitária “Comentarista Disfarçado”, lançada pela marca Lay’s (PepsiCo) com o uso de Inteligência Artificial (IA). Apresentada como um “experimento social”, a ação modificou a voz da comentarista de futebol Elaine Trevisan, transformando-a em uma voz masculina. Essa intervenção gerou tensões em torno do papel da IA na produção cultural, da representação das mulheres na mídia e das possibilidades discursivas da publicidade contemporânea. A metodologia se organiza em dois eixos: a análise de representação, proposta por Stuart Hall (2016), e a noção de publicidade expandida, desenvolvida por Machado, Burrowes e Rett (2017). A partir de uma perspectiva crítica, o artigo investiga as estratégias de divulgação da Lay’s problematizando o uso da IA como ferramenta criativa, além das relações entre consumo, desigualdades de gênero e mudança social.

آثار موسیقایی که با سنت درگیر می‌شوند، غالباً یا در مدار وفاداری کامل به میراث گذشته حرکت می‌کنند یا با گسستی بنیادین، پیوند خود را با آن می‌گسلند. پروژه «پست‌اورینتالیسم شماره چهار: ردیف موسیقی ایران» مسیر متفاوتی را پیش می‌گیرد: بازتولید کامل ردیف، نه به‌مثابه متنی بسته و موزه‌ای، بلکه به‌عنوان ماده‌ای زنده و انعطاف‌پذیر که می‌تواند در مواجهه با زبان‌های موسیقایی معاصر بازآفرینی شود.¹ این نگاه، پرسشی کلیدی پیش می‌کشد: آیا سنت باید همچون شیئی تاریخی حفاظت شود یا آن را می‌توان به عرصه‌ای گشوده بدل کرد که بقایش در توانایی تغییر نهفته است؟

This article examines the advertising campaign "Disguised Sports Commentator", launched by the brand Lay's (PepsiCo) using Artificial Intelligence (AI), through the lens of communication theories and consumer studies. Framed as a "social experiment" the campaign altered the voice of soccer commentator Elaine Trevisan, converting it into a male voice. This intervention created tensions surrounding AI's role in cultural production, the representation of women in the media, and the discursive possibilities of contemporary advertising. The methodology is structured around two key pillars: representation analysis, as proposed by Stuart Hall (2016), and the notion of expanded advertising, developed by Machado, Burrowes, and Rett (2017). From a critical perspective, the article investigates Lay's marketing strategies questioning the use of AI as a creative tool, as well as the relationships between consumption, gender inequalities, and social change.
