Abstract

The Author is a skillful Accounting Scholar that cared about practical values of accounting technology to improve decision making on financial matters. He has a rich profile in accounting discipline over the years. He served as a Principal in two different private secondary schools in Port Harcourt where he taught financial Accounting for more than three years before his appointment to serve as a Federal Auditor in Professional cadre. To be resourceful, the author is research oriented on latest development in the field of accounting. And right now, he is a business consultant in addition to Part-time lecturing in National Open University of Nigeria. He believes the practice of accounting philosophy to safeguard funds and assets of business operations to maintain steady progress as a going-concern. It is worthwhile to make a good use of this textbook to know on what platform Nigerian accounting system is based. Otherwise, our accounting system is baseless and will continue to promote abject poverty as well as endless crises in society. The understanding of accounting application in real life situations matters a lot. Of course, at this age of high technology, there is greater need for society to make progress and not destruction of lives, properties and waste of fund. Thus, the benefits of accounting cannot be realized if not practiced in real sense of accounting needs in our day-today socioeconomic activities. Note that accounting is dynamic, not static and not digressing but rational for better use of available resources to improve standard of living in society.

Accounting is crucial to socioeconomic development of every nation due to the variety of economic information it provides. The efficient use and management of resources influences economic growth and prosperity. Lack of thoroughly thought-out accounting methods lead to inefficient resource allocation and underutilization. In light of this, this paper explored accounting's technological challenges, as well as the role of accounting to socioeconomic development in Nigeria. The extensive literature review conducted showed that if accounting is to remain relevant in the quickly changing corporate environment, technological challenges brought on by artificial intelligence, cyber security, and remote work must be overcome. Further, the paper identified significant accounting-related problems brought on by technological advancements. The conclusion is that the position of accounting is becoming more difficult in the light of constantly evolving technology. The study recommends that the best way to make sure accountants stay up to date with modern economic and technological developments is ongoing training. The study also recommends that government agencies and businesses that employ accountants should offer necessary support in this area.

The Relevance of Accounting Theory on Business Financial Performance in Nigeria

The study was on the relevance of accounting theory on business financial performance in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to examine how accounting theory affects financial performance of business in Nigeria. The research was carried out, using three quoted companies (Berger Paint, Lafarge Cement and Meyer Plc) as the study area. Secondary data was gotten from the companys' audited annual reports on return on asset with multiple regression analysis. Findings revealed that accounting theory have no significant relationship with the financial performance of business organizations in Nigeria. Thus, it is recommended that the Management of quoted companies must introduce new accounting theories to improve their financial reporting quality and performance; so that the level of their profit can significantly increase.

Institutional Framework for Accounting Policy and Reporting in Nigeria: The Unresolved Issue

The quality of decisions that users of accounting information make is largely dependent on the quality of information available to them. This therefore implies that for accounting information to be of acceptable quality, it must meet some established standards and principles. This paper looks at the various institutional frameworks for accounting policy in Nigeria with a view at addressing the unresolved issue in the legal framework by adopting the recent International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The paper recommends the way forward to include the amendment of the existing laws at variance with the adoption of the IFRS framework for financial Reporting.

Oil and Gas Accounting in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry by TC Agwor

This study is aimed at assisting accounting practices operated in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria particularly to examine the major problems of accounting in the Nigerian oil industry. Also, attempt was made, to assess the role of Nigerian Accounting Standard Board (NASB), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) in developing relevant accounting standards for the industry. Data was collected using both primary and secondary sources with the aid of structured questionnaire. Simple percentages and Chi-square Statistical models were used to analyse the data. It was found that accounting standards for oil and gas industry in Nigeria owe its origin to the methods initially formulated in America and Britain with slight modifications. It was also observed that NASB, ICAN and ANAN play significant role in formulating standards for the oil and gas accounting sector in Nigeria to suit the realities of the time. It was recommended that oil and gas companies in Nigeria irrespective of their origin should show unequivocal commitment in adopting and upholding ethical standards that would lead to improvement in accounting information. The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and oil companies should relate functionally with statutory institutions like ICAN, NASB and ANAN with a view to fostering a stronger working relationship.

Nigerian Commercial Banks and Creative Accounting Practices

This study is an empirical investigation on the opinions of experienced staff of commercial banks on creative accounting practices in Nigerian commercial banks. To achieve the objective of this study research questions were raised, hypotheses formulated, and a review of related literature was made. The population of this study is the staff of commercial banks currently operating in Nigeria. Quota sampling technique was adopted for this study. The sample used consisted of the most experienced/senior 42 Managers/Assistant Managers and 42 Accountants/Assistant Accountants drawn from the twenty-one (21) consolidated commercial banks head office branches in Lagos state. The survey method of research design was adopted and the primary data were employed. The major instrument used for generating the primary data was the questionnaire, which was designed in five-response option of Likert-scale and administered on senior branch Managers/Assistant Managers and Accountants/Assistant Accountants of the commercial banks chosen for this study. The data generated for this study were analyzed through mean scores while the stated hypotheses were statistically tested with Z-test. Our findings revealed that, the major reason for creative accounting practices in Nigerian commercial banks is to boost the market value of shares; users of accounting information are adversely affected by this practice of creative accounting; Streamlining accounting principles and rules to reduce diversities of professional judgment in financial reporting will help minimize creative accounting practices. Therefore we recommended among others that creative accounting should be considered as a serious crime and as such accounting bodies, law courts and other regulatory authorities need to adopt strict measure to stop the practice.

Usefulness of Accounting Theory and Practices on Large Business Organizations in Nigeria

The study was about the impact of accounting theory and practice on performance of large scale business in Nigeria. The objective of the study was to examine the effect and usefulness of accounting theory and practice on financial performance of large firms. The research was carried out, using Coscharis Group Limited as the case study. Primary Data was collected through simple random sampling and using self-administered questionnaires for 20 respondents. Secondary Data was gotten from the company's annual reports on return on equity for the period 2014-2016. The primary and secondary data were consolidated for analysis. Multiple Linear Regression was used to analyze the data to test for the relationship between the accounting theory and practice variables (Positive Accounting Theory(PAT), Financial Reporting(FR), Auditing Practice (AP) and Budgeting) and Financial Performance(Return on Equity). Findings revealed that accounting theory and practice have significant relationship with the financial performance of large companies in Nigeria. It further shows that variables of accounting practice have significant effect on financial performance of large firms in Nigeria. It is recommended that quoted and unquoted organizations should ensure there is consistency in the accounting theory and practice adopted in preparation of their records to enhance stability in their financial performance.

As business and public entities keep on expanding, there also the need for accounting practices to keep to date as to meet the organizational objectives. Whatever decision is to be taken by management such decision depend on how well accounting data is collected, analyzed, summarized and interpreted. Accounting as an information tool passes through six critical stages, which if care is not taken at any stage the aims and objectives of the exercise can easily be jeopardized. The objective of the paper is to assess the stages and find out the six stages and analyzed the characteristic of each stage. In doing so secondary data including text books and journals are consulted. The study found that irrespective of whatever method employed, ( human, mechanical or computer) human error is the central focus. The paper recommended that intensive accounting training should be given to accounting technicians. Similarly, the paper also recommends that accountants and accounting technicians should duly comply with accounting professional ethics.

Accounting System in Public and Private Firms (A Focus at Nigeria Stock Exchange (Nse) and Gmo Group of Companies Onitsha)

The status of a firm, irrespective of form, at any point in time depends on the adequacy of the accounting system initiated by the management. This research was carried out to examine the accounting system existing in the public and private enterprises in Anambra State with GMO group of companies Onitsha and Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) Awka as study points. The research work highlighted the importance of accounting system. The study tools employed include questionnaires and oral interview addressed to accounting officials of both enterprises. In analyzing the data collected percentages was used. Karl Pearson’s correlation co-efficient was used to also test the formulated hypothesis. The development of accounting studies and practices in Nigeria

Prior to the Nigerian independence in 1960, there was little professional accounting activity in the country, which was mainly in the multinational enterprises sector under the tutelage of British accounting system. Nigeria, like most of British colonies, inherited accountancy and company law based on the British model. Disclosure requirements and reporting requirement were based on the British system. Along with multinational enterprises, large international accounting firms also influence the accounting systems in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, international accounting firms dominated the accounting and auditing practices in the country. The old link between multinational enterprises and international accounting firms is the primary reason for their presence in Nigeria, although the lack of indigenous accounting firms is another reason. So, there has been a significant amount of influence of foreign enterprises on the development of accounting system in Nigeria. Ethics play a vital role in accounting profession in Nigeria, as a result accounting enhanced economic growth in Nigeria.

Threats and Challenges to Accounting Profession: A Draw Back to the Development of Accounting Practices in Nigeria

This study examines the practice of accounting profession in other to identify those threats and challenges serving as obstacle to its development in Nigeria. To achieve this, three hypotheses were tested. A simple chi square was used to relate these threats and challenges to the development of accounting profession in Nigeria. The views and perceptions of the major actors in the field of accounting in Nigeria which includes Academic Accountants, Professional Accountants and the Accounting Regulators were sought. Relevant data were collected and analyzed and from the analysis, findings have shown that, accounting profession is actually faced with certain threats and challenges which actually affects its development.
