Description

패럴렉스 배리어 및 이를 구비한 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치 및 방법
본 발명은 패럴렉스 배리어 및 이를 구비한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에 관한 것으로, 보다 상세하게는 다중 시점의 입체영상을 디스플레이할 수 있는 패럴렉스 배리어, 해상도의 저하없이 다양한 뷰잉 각도에서 매끄러운 입체영상을 구현할 수 있으며, 2D 영상과 3D 영상을 선택적으로 절환하여 시청할 수 있는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치 및 방법에 관한 것이다.
양안시차를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에 관한 기술은 다양한 방법들이 제안되어 왔다. 그 대표적인 방법 중의 하나는 이차원 영상 패널에 일정한 거리를 두고 렌티큘러 렌즈(Lenticular Lens)나 패럴렉스 배리어(Parallax Barrier)를 설치하여, 관측자의 좌우 양안에 각기 다른 영상정보가 인식되도록 하여 입체감을 갖도록 하는 방법이다.
렌티큘러 렌즈를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치는 반원통형의 모양을 한 렌티큘러 스크린이라고 불리는 렌즈의 초점면에 좌우 영상을 줄무늬 형태로 배치하고 이 렌즈를 통해 렌즈판의 방향성에 따라 좌우영상이 분리돼 안경없이 입체영상을 볼 수 있도록 한다. 렌즈 한 개의 폭은 표시기의 화소 폭에 의해 결정되는데, 좌우영상에 해당하는 두 개의 화소가 들어가도록 만든다. 이렇게 하면 렌즈 효과에 의해 렌즈의 좌측에 있는 화소는 오른쪽눈에만 보이고, 우측에 있는 화소는 왼쪽 눈에만 보이게 됨으로써 좌우 영상의 분리가 가능해진다.
패럴렉스 배리어를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치의 원리는 도 1과 도 2를 참조하여 살펴본다. 도 1은 양안시차를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치의 원리를 설명하기 위한 개념도이며, 도 2는 다시점 영상의 합성원리를 보여주는 개념도이다.
패럴렉스 배리어를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치는 빛을 투과 또는 차단시키기 위한 가느다란 줄무늬 모양의 수직 슬릿을 일정한 간격으로 배열시킨 다음 그 앞 또는 뒤에 적당한 간격을 두고 좌우 영상을 교대로 배치하는 기술이다. 따라서, 특정한 시점에서 이 슬릿을 통해 보면 기하광학적으로 좌우영상이 정확하게 분리돼 입체감을 느끼게 된다. 즉, 모니터 화면 앞에 특수안경 기능을 하는 줄무늬 모양의 패럴렉스 배리어를 설치해서 사용자가 안경을 쓰지 않고도 입체 영상을 인식하도록 하는 기술이다.
종래 기술에 따른 패럴렉스 배리어는 광 차단부와 광 투과부가 세로 줄무늬(stripe) 형태로 상호 교번되게 반복적으로 배치된다. 한편, 3시점 이상의 다중 시점 입체영상을 디스플레이 하기 위해서는 시점수에 따라 광 차단부의 폭이 광 투과부의 폭보다 넓어지게 되는데, 스트라이프 형태의 패럴렉스 배리어를 이용하면 시점수가 증가함에 따라 수평 해상도는 수직 해상도에 비해 점점 감소하게 되는 문제점이 발생하게 된다.
또한, 종래 기술에 따른 패럴렉스 배리어는 필름 상에 차단막을 인쇄하여 제조한 후, 이러한 패럴렉스 배리어를 디스플레이 장치의 전면에 배치시켜서 구성한다. 그러나 이러한 필름 형태의 패럴렉스 배리어는 한번 설치하면 분리하기가 곤란하고, 분리한다하더라도 얼라인을 통해서 재설치하는 것이 번거롭기 때문에 패럴렉스 배리어가 설치된 입체영상 디스플레이 장치는 입체영상만을 시청할 수 밖에 없다. 따라서, 사용자가 2D 영상을 시청하기 위해서는 별도의 디스플레이 장치가 필요하게 되며, 그 결과 2D 디스플레이 장치와 3D 디스플레이장치 2대를 보유해야만 하므로, 이는 사용자의 경제적 부담으로 작용된다. 따라서, 단일의 디스플레이 장치만으로 2D 영상과 3D 영상을 선택적으로 디스플레이할 수 있는 장치가 요구되고 있는 실정이다.
본 발명은 상술한 종래의 문제점을 극복하기 위한 것으로서, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는 적어도 3시점 이상의 다중 시점 입체영상을 디스플레이하는 경우, 수직 해상도에 비해 수평 해상도가 감소하는 것을 최소화할 수 있는 패럴렉스 배리어를 제공하기 위한 것이다.
그리고, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는 해상도의 저하없이 다양한 뷰잉 각도에서 매끄러은 입체영상을 구현할 수 있으며, 2D 영상과 3D 영상을 선택적으로 절환하여 시청할 수 있는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치 및 방법을 제공하기 위한 것이다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에 제공할 N시점 합성 영상을 생성하는 단계; 및 상기 합성 영상을 디스플레이 프레임에 맵핑하는 단계를 포함하며, 상기 맵핑하는 단계는, 상기 디스플레이 프레임을 j×k 다시점 픽셀 그룹으로 그룹화하는 단계로서, 상기 각 픽셀그룹은 제1 픽셀부, 제2 픽셀부 및 제3 픽셀부로 이루어지며, 상기 각 픽셀부는 N×1 서브픽셀로 이루어지는 단계; 임의의 열(column)에 배치된 k개의 다시점 픽셀 그룹의 제m행의 제1 픽셀부를 미리 정해진 시점 배열 순서대로 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계; 상기 제m행의 제2 픽셀부는 상기 제m행의 제1 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1 서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키며, 상기 제m행의 제3 픽셀부는 상기 제m행의 제2 픽셀부와 동일하게 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계; 상기 제m행과 인접하여 배치되는 제m+1행의 제1 픽셀부는 상기 m행의 제3 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계; 및 상기 제m+1행의 제2 픽셀부는 상기 제m+1행의 제1 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1 서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키며, 상기 제m+1행의 제3 픽셀부는 상기 제m+1행의 제2 픽셀부와 동일하게 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 방법이 제공된다.
본 발명의 다른 측면에 따르면, 영상신호를 디스플레이 하기 위한 디스플레이 패널; 상기 디스플레이 패널의 구동을 제어하기 위한 디스플레이 패널 구동부; 상기 디스플레이 패널 상에 배치되어, 상기 디스플레이 패널에서 디스플레이 되는 다시점 영상을 투과시키는 패럴렉스 배리어 패널; 상기 패럴렉스 배리어 패널을 제어하기 위한 배리어 패널 구동부; 및 상기 디스플레이 패널 구동부와 상기 배리어 패널 구동부의 동작을 제어하며, 합성영상을 디스플레이 프레임에 맵핑하는 것을 제어하는 제어부를 포함하며,상기 패럴렉스 배리어 패널은 상호 교번되게 반복 배치되는 광투과부와 가변 광차단부를 포함하며, 상기 가변 광차단부는 액정셀로 구성되어, 선택적으로 투명 또는 불투명셀로 구동되고, 상기 광투과부를 통하여 각 픽셀그룹의 제1 픽셀부는 R 서브픽셀, G 서브픽셀 및 B 서브픽셀 중 2개의 서브픽셀이 노출되고, 제2 픽셀부는 상기 R 서브픽셀, G 서브픽셀 및 B 서브픽셀이 노출되고, 상기 제3 픽셀부는 상기 제1 픽셀부에서 노출되지 않은 서브픽셀과 나머지 서브픽셀 중 어느 하나가 노출되도록, 상기 광투과부와 상기 가변 광차단부는 기울어져 배치되는 것을 특징으로 하는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치가 제공된다.

본 발명에서와 같이, 해상도의 저하없이 다양한 뷰잉 각도에서 매끄러은 입체영상을 구현할 수 있다.
또한, 패럴렉스 배리어로서 LCD 배리어 패널을 사용함으로써, LCD 배리어 패널의 동작 유무에 따라서 2D 영상과 3D 영상을 선택적으로 절환하여 시청할 수 있게 된다.

이하, 첨부된 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대해 상세히 설명한다.
도 3은 평판 디스플레이 장치 기반 다시점 영상 합성 원리를 보여주는 개념도이며, 도 4는 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에 따른 8시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에서 합성 영상의 구조를 나타낸 도이다.
도 3을 참조하면, N은 시점수를 의미하며, (M, L)은 영상(Image)의 크기를 나타낸다. 합성 영상을 생성할 때는 최종 합성 영상의 크기와 해상도를 고려해서 각 시점별 영상의 크기를 설정해야 한다. 또한, 각 시점별 영상의 크기를 고려하여, 영상 데이터를 압축해야 한다.
도 4는 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 합성 영상의 구조이다. 본 실시예의 경우, 디스플레이 프레임의 크기는 1920×1024 픽셀이며, 이를 8개의 구역으로 분할하여, 각 구역에 각 시점별 영상 데이터를 매칭시킨다. 1시점과 2시점은 다른 시점들(즉, 3내지 8시점)의 구역보다 크게 설정되었다. 3시점 내지 8시점의 경우, 합성 영상내에서 각 시점별 영상의 크기는 640×384 픽셀로 설정되고, 1시점과 2시점은 640×384 픽셀 이외에 추가적으로 640×128 픽셀이 더 설정된다. 본 실시예의 경우에는 1시점과 2시점의 크기를 더 크게 설정하였으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
도 5는 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에 따른 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 방법을 나타낸 흐름도이다. 도 5를 참조하면, 우선 N 시점에 대응되는 N개의 영상을 획득하는 과정을 수행한다(S10). 디스플레이 패널을 N개 영역으로 분할하고(S20), 분할된 영역의 크기에 맞게 각 시점별 영상을 압축하는 과정을 수행한다(S30). 그 다음에, 각 영역에 상기 각 시점별 압축된 영상을 배치하여 합성 영상을 생성하는 과정을 수행한다(S40). S40 과정을 거쳐 생성된 합성 영상을 디스플레이 프레임에 맵핑하는 과정을 수행한다(S50). 맵핑된 합성 영상을 상기 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 패널로 제공하며(S60), 디스플레이 패널 상에 배치된 패럴렉스 배리어 패널을 작동시켜서, 다시점 입체영상을 디스플레이 한다(S70).
도 6은 디스플레이 프레임을 나타내며, 도 7은 디스플레이 프레임을 j×k다시점 픽셀 그룹으로 그룹화한 상태를 나타내며, 도 8은 각 다시점 픽셀 그룹의 구성을 설명하기 위한 도이다. 도 6은 임의의 화상이 디스플레이 패널을 통해서 디스플레이 되는 영역의 크기를 의미하는 디스플레이 프레임을 나타낸다. 도 7을 참조하면, 디스플레이 프레임은 j×k 개의 다시점 픽셀 그룹으로 그룹화되며, 이때 j, k는 자연수이다. 도 8에는 각 다시점 픽셀 그룹의 구성이 도시되는데, 각 다시점 픽셀 그룹은 제1 픽셀부, 제2 픽셀부 및 제3 픽셀부로 이루어지며, 각 픽셀부는 N×1개의 서브픽셀로 이루어지고, 이때 N은 시점의 수이다. 본 실시예의 경우, 8시점이므로 N은 8이며, 제1 픽셀부는 8×1 서브픽셀로 이루어지며, 제2 픽셀부는 제1 픽셀부 아래에 배치되고 8×1 서브픽셀로 이루어지고, 제3 픽셀부는 제2 픽셀부 아래에 배치되고 8×1 서브픽셀로 이루어진다. 또한, 3개의 서브픽셀이 모여서 1개의 픽셀을 구성한다.
도 9 및 도 10은 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에 따른 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에서의 합성영상 맵핑방법을 나타낸 도이다. 도 9 및 도 10을 참조하면, 우선 도 7 및 도 8에서 살펴본 바와 같이 디스플레이 프레임을 j×k 다시점 픽셀 그룹으로 그룹화한다. 이때하는 단계로서, 상기 각 픽셀그룹은 제1 픽셀부, 제2 픽셀부 및 제3 픽셀부로 이루어지며, 상기 각 픽셀부는 N×1 서브픽셀로 이루어진다. 본 실시예의 경우, 8시점을 예로서 설명하고 있으므로, N은 8이다. 그러므로, 각 픽셀 그룹의 제1 내지 제3 픽셀부 각각은 8×1 서브픽셀로 이루어진다. 그 다음을 살펴보면, 임의의 열(column)에 배치된 k개의 다시점 픽셀 그룹의 제m행의 제1 픽셀부를 미리 정해진 시점 배열 순서대로 합성 영상을 맵핑시킨다. 그리고, 제m행의 제2 픽셀부는 제m행의 제1 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1 서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키며, 제m행의 제3 픽셀부는 상기 제m행의 제2 픽셀부와 동일하게 합성 영상을 맵핑시킨다. 또한, 제m행과 인접하여 배치되는 제m+1행의 제1 픽셀부는 m행의 제3 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시킨다. 그리고, 제m+1행의 제2 픽셀부는 상기 제m+1행의 제1 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1 서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키며, 제m+1행의 제3 픽셀부는 제m+1행의 제2 픽셀부와 동일하게 합성 영상을 맵핑시킨다.
위의 맵핑 방법을 본 실시예 즉, 8시점에 적용하여 살펴보면, 제1열에 배치된 k개의 다시점 픽셀 그룹을 살펴보면, 제1열, 제1행의 다시점 픽셀 그룹의 제1 픽셀부는 제1시점, 제8시점, 제7시점, 제6시점, 제5시점, 제4시점, 제3시점 및 제2시점의 배열 순서로 합성 영상이 맵핑된다. 제2 픽셀부는 제1행의 제1 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1 서브픽셀 만큼 좌측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시킨다. 제2 픽셀부는 제8시점 부터 시작하여, 순차적으로 시점이 감소되도록 배치된다 즉, 제8시점, 제7시점, 제6시점, 제5시점, 제4시점, 제3시점, 제2시점 및 제1시점의 배열 순서로 합성 영상이 맵핑된다. 제1행의 제3 픽셀부는 제2 픽셀부와 동일하게 합성 영상을 맵핑시킨다. 즉, 제8시점, 제7시점, 제6시점, 제5시점, 제4시점, 제3시점, 제2시점 및 제1시점의 배열 순서로 합성 영상이 맵핑된다. 그리고, 제2행의 제1 픽셀부는 제7시점부터 시작하여 순자적으로 시점이 감소되도록 배치된다 즉, 제7시점, 제6시점, 제5시점, 제4시점, 제3시점, 제2시점, 제1시점 및 제8시점의 배열 순서로 합성영상이 맵핑된다. 또한, 제2행의 제2 픽셀부 및 제3 픽셀부는 제6시점, 제5시점, 제4시점, 제3시점, 제2시점, 제1시점, 제8시점 및 제7시점의 배열 순서로 합성영상이 맵핑된다. 나머지 행의 픽셀부 역시 위의 방식과 마찬가지의 방식으로 합성 영상이 맵핑된다.
이와 같이 합성 영상을 맵핑하면, 도 10에서 살펴볼 수 있는 것과 같이 각시점별 합성 영상은 R, G, B 서브픽셀이 모여서 픽셀을 이루지 않고, R, G, B 서브픽셀 중 2개의 서브픽셀만으로 픽셀을 구성하게 된다. 즉, (1, 1)은 R 서브픽셀과 2개의 G 서브픽셀로 구성되며, (2, 1)은 B 서브픽셀과 2개의 G 서브픽셀로 구성됨을 알 수 있다.
도 11은 본 발명에 따른 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에서의 합성영상 맵핑방법에 적합하게 구성된 패럴렉스 배리어의 개략 구성도이며, 도 12는 도 11에 도시된 패럴렉스 배리어의 부분 확대도이다. 도 11을 참조하면, 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300)은 상호 교번되게 반복 배치되는 광투과부(310)와 가변 광차단부(320)를 포함하며, 패럴렉스 배리어 패널의 가변 광차단부(320)는 액정셀로 구성되어, 선택적으로 투명 또는 불투명셀로 구동된다. 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300)은 상호 교번되게 반복 배치되는 광투과부(310)와 가변 광차단부(320)를 포함하며, 광투과부(310)를 통하여 각 픽셀그룹의 제1 픽셀부는 R 서브픽셀, G 서브픽셀 및 B 서브픽셀 중 2개의 서브픽셀이 노출되고, 제2 픽셀부는 상기 R 서브픽셀, G 서브픽셀 및 B 서브픽셀이 노출되고, 상기 제3 픽셀부는 상기 제1 픽셀부에서 노출되지 않은 서브픽셀과 나머지 서브픽셀 중 어느 하나가 노출되도록, 광투과부(310)와 가변 광차단부(320)는 기울어져 배치된다. 즉, 제1열, 제1행의 다시점 픽셀그룹 상에 배치된 패럴렉스 배리어 패널의 광투과부(310)를 살펴보면, 제1 픽셀부는 (6, 1)R 서브픽셀과 (5, 1)G 서브픽셀을 노출시키며, 제2 픽셀부는 (6, 1)B 서브픽셀과, (5, 1)R 서브픽셀 및 (4, 1)G 서브픽셀을 노출시킨다. 또한, 제3 픽셀부는 (6, 1)B 서브픽셀과 (5, 1)R 서브픽셀을 노출시킨다.
도 12를 참조하면, 광투과부(310)와 가변 광차단부(320)는 일정 각도 기울어져 배치되며, 광투과부(310)의 너비는 디스플레이 패널의 서브 픽셀의 너비에 상응하게 형성되며, 광투과부(310)의 너비 대 가변 광차단부(320)의 너비의 비율은 1:n-1로 설정되며, 광투과부(310)와 가변 광차단부(320)는 패럴렉스 배리어 패널의 행 방향을 기준으로 75 ~ 80도 기울어져 배치된다. 광 투과부의 너비는 디스플레이 패널의 각 서브픽셀의 너비와 동일하게 형성하며, 광 투과부의 너비 대 가변 광차단부의 너비의 비율은 1:7로 형성한다. 즉, n시점의 경우에는 광 투과부의 너비 대 가변 광차단부의 너비의 비율은 1:n-1로 형성한다. 각 서브픽셀의 가로 길이 대 세로 길이는 1:3의 비율로 형성하며, 광 투과부와 가변 광차단부의 기울기 각도는 이하의 실험예에서 도출된 바와 같이 77.5도로 형성한다. (기울기 각도 θ=tan-1(9/2)= 77.5). 즉, 광 투과부와 가변 광차단부는 x축 방향 즉, 패럴렉스 배리어 패널의 행 방향을 기준으로 77.5도 경사지게 형성한다. 패럴렉스 배리어 패널의 최적 기울기 각도는 시뮬레이션과 실험을 통하여 도출하였다. 일반적으로 입체 영상 디스플레이 장치에서 시청자는 좌안과 우안이 패럴렉스 배리어의 광 투과부를 통해서 각각 좌안 영상 픽셀과 우안 영상 픽셀에 표시되는 상이한 영상을 보게 되어 입체감을 느낄수 있게 된다. 그러나, 좌안에 우안 영상이 디스플레이 되거나, 또는 좌안에 좌안 영상과 우안 영상이 동시에 디스플레이 되는 경우와 같이, 시청자의 좌안 또는 우안에 해당 영상이 아닌 다른 영상이 디스플레이 되는 경우에는 입체영상이 제대로 디스플레이 되지 않게 되는데, 이러한 시점을 배드(bad) 시점이라 한다. 이와 같이 배드 시점이 발생한 경우에는 시청자가 입체 영상 디스플레이 장치를 바라보는 관점을 이동하거나, 또는 디스플레이되는 영상을 변화시켜야만 배드 시점이 사라지게 된다.
본 실시예의 경우, 기울기 각도를 77.5도로 설명하고 있으나, 2.5도 내외에서는 수평해상도 및 밝기 상의 차이가 큰 변화가 없으므로, 광 투과부와 가변 광차단부의 기울기 각도는 75도 내지 80도 설정하는 것이 바람직하다. 본 발명에서와 같이, 광 투과부의 너비를 서브픽셀의 너비와 동일하게 형성하고, 광 투과부와 가변 광차단부를 패럴렉스 배리어 패널의 행 방향을 기준으로 77.5도 경사지게 형성하면, 시점의 개수가 증가하더라도 수평해상도 및 밝기가 저하되는 것을 방지할 수 있게 된다. 또한, 시청자가 입체 영상 시청 중 배드 시점이 발생한 경우, 이동 시점을 최소화하더라도 배드 시점을 사라지게 할 수 있기 때문에, 시청자에게 보다 편안한 입체 영상을 제공할 수 있게 된다.
도 13은 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예에 따른 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치의 개략 구성도이고, 도 14는 본 발명의 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치를 2D 디스플레이 장치로 활용 시 상태도이며, 도 15는 본 발명의 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치를 3D 디스플레이 장치로 활용 시 상태도이다.
도 13 내지 도 14를 참조하면, 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치는 디스플레이 패널(100), 디스플레이 패널 구동부(200), 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300), 배리어 패널 구동부(400) 및 제어부(500)를 포함한다. 디스플레이 패널(100)은 영상신호를 디스플레이 하며, 디스플레이 패널(100)은 디스플레이 패널 구동부(200)의 제어에 따라 다중 시점의 입체영상 신호를 디스플레이 한다. 이때, 디스플레이 패널(100)은 평판형 디스플레이 패널로서, 예를 들면 액정 표시 장치, 플라즈마 표시 장치, OLED 표시 장치 등이 사용될 수 있다. 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300)은 디스플레이 패널(100) 상에 배치되어, 디스플레이 패널(100)에서 디스플레이 되는 다시점 영상을 투과시킨다. 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300)은 상호 교번되게 반복 배치되는 광투과부(310)와 가변 광차단부(320)를 포함하며, 가변 광차단부(320)는 액정셀로 구성되어, 선택적으로 투명 또는 불투명셀로 구동된다. 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300)로서 액정 표시 장치가 사용될 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다. 배리어 패널 구동부(400)는 패럴렉스 배리어 패널(300)의 온, 오프 동작을 제어하여, 디스플레이 패널(100)을 2D 또는 3D 디스플레이 장치로 절환시키는 기능을 수행한다. 제어부(500)는 디스플레이 패널 구동부(200)와 배리어 패널 구동부(400)의 동작을 제어하며, 합성영상을 디스플레이 프레임에 맵핑하는 것을 제어한다.
도 16은 본 발명에 따른 패럴렉스 배리어를 구비한 입체영상 디스플레이 장치의 개략 구성도이다. 도 16을 참조하면, 입체영상 디스플레이 장치는 디스플레이 패널 구동부(200), 디스플레이 패널(300) 및 패럴렉스 배리어(400)를 포함한다.
디스플레이 패널 구동부(200)는 다중 시점의 입체영상 신호를 패럴렉스 배리어(400)의 형태에 적합하게 디스플레이 시키기 위하여, 디스플레이 패널(300)을 제어하는 기능을 수행한다. 디스플레이 패널 구동부(200)에서는 광 투과부(410)를 통하여 임의의 시점에서의 입체 영상 이미지를 디스플레이 하도록 제어한다.
디스플레이 패널(300)은 디스플레이 패널 구동부(200)의 제어에 따라 다중 시점의 입체영상 신호를 디스플레이 한다. 이때, 디스플레이 패널(300)은 평판형 디스플레이 패널로서, 예를 들면 액정 표시 장치, 플라즈마 표시 장치, OLED 표시 장치 등이 사용될 수 있다. 패럴렉스 배리어(400)는 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)로 구성되어, 디스플레이 패널(300)에서 디스플레이 되는 다중 시점 영상을 선택적으로 투과시킨다. 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)는 상호 교번되게 반복 배치되며, 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)는 일정 각도 기울어진 세로 줄무늬 형태로 형성된다.
도 17은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 패럴렉스 배리어의 개략 구성도이며, 도 18은 도 17에 도시된 패럴렉스 배리어의 부분 확대도이다. 도 17 및 도 18에 도시된 패럴렉스 배리어는 8시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치용에 사용되는 패럴렉스 배리어를 예로서 설명한다. 도 17 및 도 18은 디스플레이 패널 상에 패럴렉스 배리어가 배치된 상태를 나타낸 도면이다. 도 17 및 도 18을 참조하면, 디스플레이 패널(300)은 다수의 픽셀을 포함하며, 하나의 픽셀은 3개의 서브픽셀 즉, R 서브픽셀, G 서브픽셀 및 B 서브픽셀로 구성된다. 광 투과부(410)의 너비는 디스플레이 패널(300)의 각 서브픽셀의 너비와 동일하게 형성하며, 광 투과부(410)의 너비 대 광 차단부(420)의 너비의 비율은 1:7로 형성한다. 즉, n시점의 경우에는 광 투과부의 너비 대 광 차단부의 너비의 비율은 1:n-1로 형성한다. 각 서브픽셀의 가로 길이 대 세로 길이는 1:3의 비율로 형성하며, 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)의 기울기 각도는 이하의 실험예에서 도출된 바와 같이 77.5도로 형성한다. (기울기 각도 θ=tan-1(9/2)= 77.5). 즉, 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)는 x축 방향 즉, 패럴렉스 배리어의 행 방향을 기준으로 77.5도 경사지게 형성한다. 패럴렉스 배리어의 최적 기울기 각도는 시뮬레이션과 실험을 통하여 도출하였다. 일반적으로 입체 영상 디스플레이 장치에서 시청자는 좌안과 우안이 패럴렉스 배리어의 광 투과부를 통해서 각각 좌안 영상 픽셀과 우안 영상 픽셀에 표시되는 상이한 영상을 보게 되어 입체감을 느낄수 있게 된다. 그러나, 좌안에 우안 영상이 디스플레이 되거나, 또는 좌안에 좌안 영상과 우안 영상이 동시에 디스플레이 되는 경우와 같이, 시청자의 좌안 또는 우안에 해당 영상이 아닌 다른 영상이 디스플레이 되는 경우에는 입체영상이 제대로 디스플레이 되지 않게 되는데, 이러한 시점을 배드(bad) 시점이라 한다. 이와 같이 배드 시점이 발생한 경우에는 시청자가 입체 영상 디스플레이 장치를 바라보는 관점을 이동하거나, 또는 디스플레이되는 영상을 변화시켜야만 배드 시점이 사라지게 된다.
본 실시예에서는 디스플레이 되는 영상의 종류, 입체 영상 디스플레이 장치의 크기(70인치) 및 시청자의 시청 거리(5m) 등 다른 제반 조건은 동일하게 설정한 후, 패럴렉스 배리어의 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)의 기울기 각도를 다르게 설정함으로써, 패럴레스 배리어의 기울기 경사와 배드 시점을 탈피하기 위한 이동 거리 간의 상관 관계를 실험을 통하여 도출하였으며, 그 결과는 이하의 실험예와 같다.

도 19는 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 패럴렉스 배리어의 개략 구성도이다.
도 19를 참조하면, 광 투과부(410)의 너비는 디스플레이 패널(300)의 각 서브픽셀의 너비와 동일하게 형성하며, 광 투과부(410)의 너비 대 광 차단부(420)의 너비의 비율은 1:7로 형성한다. 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)의 기울기 각도는 77.5도로 형성하며, 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)의 경계 영역을 요철 형태로 형성한다. 본 실시예의 경우, 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)의 경계 영역이 전체적으로 계단 형태가 되도록 형성한다. 이와 같이, 광 투과부(410)와 광 차단부(420)의 경계 영역을 요철 형태로 형성하면, 그렇지 않은 경우에 비하여 입체영상 디스플레이 장치의 밝기 향상되는 효과를 얻을 수 있다.

Claims (14)

  1. 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에 제공할 N시점 합성 영상을 생성하는 단계; 및
    상기 합성 영상을 디스플레이 프레임에 맵핑하는 단계를 포함하며, 상기 맵핑하는 단계는,
    상기 디스플레이 프레임을 j×k 다시점 픽셀 그룹으로 그룹화하는 단계로서, 상기 각 픽셀그룹은 제1 픽셀부, 제2 픽셀부 및 제3 픽셀부로 이루어지며, 상기 각 픽셀부는 N×1 서브픽셀로 이루어지는 단계;
    임의의 열(column)에 배치된 k개의 다시점 픽셀 그룹의 제m행의 제1 픽셀부를 미리 정해진 시점 배열 순서대로 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계;
    상기 제m행의 제2 픽셀부는 상기 제m행의 제1 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1 서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키며, 상기 제m행의 제3 픽셀부는 상기 제m행의 제2 픽셀부와 동일하게 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계;
    상기 제m행과 인접하여 배치되는 제m+1행의 제1 픽셀부는 상기 m행의 제3 픽셀부의 시점 배열 순서는 유지하되, 1서브픽셀 만큼 좌측 또는 우측으로 이동시켜 합성 영상을 맵핑시키는 단계; 및

  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 N시점 합성 영상을 생성하는 단계는,
    N 시점에 대응되는 N개의 영상을 획득하는 단계;
    디스플레이 패널을 N개 영역으로 분할하고, 분할된 영역의 크기에 맞게 상기 각 시점별 영상을 압축하는 단계; 및
    상기 각 영역에 상기 각 시점별 압축된 영상을 배치하여 합성 영상을 생성하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 방법.
  3. 제2항에 있어서, 상기 입체영상 디스플레이 방법은,
    상기 맵핑된 합성 영상을 상기 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치로 제공하는 단계 및
    상기 디스플레이 패널 상에 배치된 패럴렉스 배리어 패널을 작동시키는 단계를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치를 이용한 입체영상 디스플레이 방법.

  14. 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치에 있어서,
    영상신호를 디스플레이 하기 위한 디스플레이 패널;
    상기 디스플레이 패널의 구동을 제어하기 위한 디스플레이 패널 구동부; 및
    상기 디스플레이 패널 상에 배치되어, 상기 디스플레이 패널에서 디스플레이 되는 다중 시점 영상을 선택적으로 투과시키는 패럴렉스 배리어를 포함하며, 상기 패럴렉스 배리어는,
    상호 교번되게 반복 배치되는 광 투과부와 광 차단부를 포함하며,
    상기 디스플레이 패널의 제m행은 상기 광 투과부를 통하여 R, G, B 서브픽셀 중 2개의 서브픽셀이 노출되고, 제m+1행은 상기 광 투과부를 통하여 R, G, B 서브픽셀 모두가 노출되고, 제m+2행은 상기 광 투과부를 통하여 R, G, B 서브픽셀 중 2개의 서브픽셀이 노출되도록, 상기 광 투과부와 상기 광 차단부가 일정 각도 기울어져 배치되며,
    상기 광 투과부의 너비는 상기 디스플레이 패널의 서브 픽셀의 너비에 상응하게 형성되며, 상기 광 투과부의 너비 대 상기 광 차단부의 너비의 비율은 1:n-1로 설정되며, 상기 n은 시점의 수를 나타내며, n은 3 이상의 정수인 것을 특징으로 하는 다시점 입체영상 디스플레이 장치.
