To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GrowIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to faucets and the object of the invention is to provide a device of .this character of a comparatively simple construction, whereby water of different temperatures may be drawn by simply rotating a handle, the said handle having a projecting finger adapted to designate the condition of the water to be drawn and the handle being also adaptedv to turn the How of water completely off.
With the abovev and other objects inl view, which will appear as the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, as it now appears to me and in which,

Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 4 4 .of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form substantially upon the line 5 5 of Fig. 5. Fig. 6 is a similar view upon the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral`1 designates the faucet proper. This faucet is providedY with an upper chamber 2 and a central partition 3 depending downwardly from the lower wall of the said compartment 2. lower portion of the device into a pairl of passages designated by the numerals4 and 5. One of these passages such as designated by the numeral 4 in Fig. 1 of the drawings is adapted for the reception of hot water, while the passage 5` is adapted for the recept'ion of cold water. The lower portion of the faucet 1 is of a cross' sectionally circular form and is provided with suitable exterior threads 6, whereby the faucet may be attached to suitable connecting pipes.
The floor 7 of the upper compartment 2 'is provided upon each side of the partition 3V with integrally formed upstanding sleeves The partition 3 divides theA 8 and 9. The lower portions of these sleeves n, I
2 from whence it is delivered through the 1 Y spout 13.
The compartment 2 is provided with an upper wall 14 and this wall 14 has threaded openings adapted for the reception of bushings 15 within which the stems 16 of the valves are retained. Positioned aroundl these stems 16 and between the lower'face of each o-f the bushings and the upper face of the valves are helical springs 17, which are adapted to force the said valves upon their seats 10, thus preventing the entrance of water into the compartment 2 through either of the passages 4 or 5.
Each of the sleeves 8 and 9 have their adjacent faces provided with a vertical slot and these slots are adapted for the reception `of offset portions 18 securely connected with each of the'valves 11 and 12 and for a purpose hereinafter to be fully set forth.
The top wall 14 of the compartment 2 may be provided with a plurality of drip openings 19, whereby water rising within the compartment 2 may obtain an entrance within an auxiliary compartment provided with an annular inturned flange 21. The kflange 21 is provided-,with a plurality of threaded openings whereby a' head 22 through the medium of securing elements 23 may be connected with the body of the faucet. This head 22 is centrally provided with a pocket 24 and this pocket' is threaded and' has its lower extremity open.
The numeral 25 indicates the operating rod of the device. This rod 25` extends vertically through the opening provided in the pocket 24 and through a suitable opening provided in the top 14 of the compartment 2. The lower extremity of the rod 25 rests in a suitable bearing opening providedin the lower floor 7 in the compartment 2, and the said lower portion is provided with a cam 26. This cam 26 has its upper face of an ogee formation so that when the rod 25 is rotated it will engage beneath one of the offsets 18 and lift one of the valves 11 or 12.
The threaded pocket 24 of the top member 22 is adapted for the reception of a suitable glandA 27, whereby the operating rod 25 is afforded a suitable bearing.
The numeral 28 Vdesignates the top or dial plate of the device. This'plate 28 is provided with a central opening through which the upper extremity ofthe operating rod 25 projects and the upper extension of the said operating rod yis threaded as at 29, whereby the same is securely connected with a handle 30, through the medium of a nut 31. By reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings v it will be noted that the plate 28 is provided with a plurality of indicating marks 31 whereby the temperature of the water to be drawn may be readily ascertained. It will also be noted by reference to this Fig. 3 that the handle 30 is provided with a projecting finger 31 adapted to serve as a pointer for the different indicating marks upon the plate 28.
The operation of the device is as follows: It is, of course, to be understood that when the finger 31 of the handle 30 points to the indicating mark spelling oif no water is allowed within the compartment 2. When the handle is swung so that the finger 31 points to either the hot or the cold water, water either of these temperatures will be delivered through the spout 13, as either the valve 11 or the valve 12 will be raised to allow an inflow of either hot or cold water into the compartment 2. When the indicator 31 is brought to the tepid mark the enlarged upstanding portions of the ogee valve controlling device 26 will have raised both of the valves 11 and 12, thus allowing the hot or cold water to miX within the compartment 2 and to be discharged through the spout 13.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have illustrated a slightly modied form of the device. In these iigures,it will be noted that I haveV dispensedwith the wall 14 and have provided a head 22 with suitable, integrally formed,
depending sleeves and the said sleeves are adapted for the reception of the upper portions of the valve stems 16. The head 22 is centrally provided with an opening which is adapted for the reception of the operating rod 25 and the operating rod is securely j retained in proper position upon the head 22 through the medium of a suitable bushing 51. The head 22 is effectively connected with the body of the device through the medium of suitable threaded retaining elements 52, similar to the elements 23 heretofore described. The closure 22 is also provided with a plate 52 having its face provided with suitable indicating marks, similar to the indicating marks 31, and the rod is j also provided with a suitable indicator 53 which is retained in proper position upon the operating rod 25 through the medium `of a suitable retaining member 54. The general structure of the device is precisely similar to that described in connection with the Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, but the apparatus disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6 requires less material so as to render the same ofa cheap construction as well as materially adding to the lightness of the same.
While I have described both of the devices as being provided with suitable handle member having a pointer adapted to overlie the indicating marks upon the plates, it is to be understood that a wheel having a single indicating mark or offset may be employed with equal efficiency, if desired, the pointer for the handle or hand wheel of the device illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 being designated by the numeral 55.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the advantages of construction and method of operation will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principles of operation together with the apparatus I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes in form or in the details of construction, as may fall within the scope of the following claims, may be resorted to, if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A faucet comprising an upper compart- `ment having separate passages connected therewith, sleeves provided with openings upon this compartment, said sleeves being each provided with a communication with the passages and a communication with the compartment, spring pressed valves within these sleeves normally closing the passages,
and means for raising one or both of these valves.
2. A faucet having a body portion provided with a. compartment, said compartment having a depending partition adapted to provide separate passages, sleeves upon the lower wall of the compartment, said sleeves being each provided'with an opening communicating with the separate passages and with the compartment, a springj-.pressed valve within each of the sleeves, an operating rod'provided with a handle, and a valve operating device having oppositely disposed projections adapted to operate one or both of the valves as desired.
3. A faucet having its body provided with a compartment and a partition connected.
with thelower wall of the compartment, the lower wallV of the compartment being provided with sleeves having valve seats, said sleeves being also provided with openings communicating with 'the separate passages and with the compartment, the opposite faces of the sleeves having vertical out away portions, spring actuated valves within the sleeves, said valves having oset portions projecting through the vertical cut away portions of the sleeves, an operating rod provided with a handle, a plate upon the top of the valve casing having indicating marks, and an operating rod having its lower extremity provided with a circular member having oppositely disposed projecting portions which are adapted to contact 10 with one or both of the projections of the valves to unseat the same.
