SIGHT FOR FlREARlVlS.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,242, dated January 14 1902. d
Application filed September 28,1901. Serial No. 76,907. (No model.)
To @ZZ 'L1/71,0711, t mfr-y con/cern:
Bo it known that I, FREDERICK JOHN CHOLEs, captain, ordnance officer, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Iietermaritzburg, in the Colony of Natal, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Sights for Rifles, Machine-Guns, and other Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a back-sight arrangement for rifies, machineguns, and other rearms by which defects in the sighting thereof can be readily remedied with -ease,eXpedition,and accuracy and which will constitute an efficient wind-gage and obviate the necessity for the use of detached sighting appliances.
l will describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan with the sight-leaf lowered, and Fig. 2 an elevation with the sight-leaf raised, of a sight-ing arrangement according to my invention. Fig. 3 shows ar modification of the screw.
Secured to the barrel A is the base A2 of the back-sight arrangement. The leaf-bed B is pivoted at h to the base A2 and is provided with a dovetail projection b2, which works in a corresponding groove in the base A2.
C is the sight-leaf, hinged to the leaf-bed B and carrying the back sight o, the said bed B having in it a curved slot c2, the curve being struck from the center h. A pinching-screw D (provided with a handle d) passes through this slot and is screwed into the base A2. On the rear end of the bed B are teeth c3,- with which engages a worm e on a shaft E, mounted in Xed bearings e2 and provided with a milled head e2, so that by operating this the leaf-bed B can be moved in either direction sidewise on the center b, carrying with it the backsight leaf and back sight, so as to counteract any defect in the alinement of the back sight and fore sight and to make allowance for windage as required. When the adj ustment is made, the leaf-bed B can be fixed by the pinching-screw D.
If desired, the screw D can be replaced by a pointer D'. (Shown in Fig. 3.) A scale is marked at the edge of the slot c2 to indicate the required adjustment for windage.
Figs. 4 and 5 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2, showing another mode of mounting the leafbed B on the base A2, the pivot b, on which the leaf-bed is capable of being adj usted laterally, being in this modification situated about midway between the ends of the leaf-bed, the said leaf-bed having on its under side two curved grooves a, engaging with projections h2 in the base A2, struck from the center of the pivot b. The projections h2 and the curved grooves a may be dovetail or other suitable shape to retain the leaf-bed in contact with the base A2.
It is obvious that in both modifications the projections b2 and the grooves a may be reversedthat is to say, the curved grooves may be in the under side of the leaf-bed B and the projections h2 on the base A2, as shown in Figs. j
being provided with curved grooves and proj ections concentric with the pivot,in combination with gearing to move said leaf-base and a means to lock the leaf-base in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
3. An improved sight for rifles and the like,
' comprising a base secured to the barrel, aleafbase pivoted thereto and carrying a hinged sight-leaf, the base and leaf-base having curved dovetailed grooves and projections between the base and leaf-base concentric with the pivot and means for moving the leafbase radially on its pivot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK JOI-IN CIIOLES.
