Abstract

An all purpose travel bag has a carrying strap and a sack with top, bottom and side zipper closures for the compartments herein. The front of the bag is made of transparent plastic. The bottom of the sack is divided into three compartments intended to house binoculars, a camera and film, respectively, closed at their lower end by a common zipper. Over these compartments are five others of unequal length and/or width. The two outer ones are closed by vertical zippers on the sides of the bag and hold passports and an umbrella. The three inner and smaller compartments have zippers at their tops and hold a thermos bottle, magazines and a radio, respectively.

In design, this bag is more closely akin to a handbag than to a knapsack or packs which are normally carried, on the back of a person. While the invention comtemplates use thereof mainly in travel bags it is applicable also to use for other purposes such as a camping or fishing kit and the like.

All travelers have experienced annoyance in not having immediatelyv at hand certain items such as a passport or' a camera and as a result having to unpack a case or having to dig around in a bag to find the desired article.

DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR ART The prior art to which this invention relates is already aware of the following US. Pat. Nos. 3,734,365; 2,792,980; 2,456,253; 2,456,247; and 2,390,673. Generally, the structures described therein areof the pack carrier type and do not have a plurality of separate,

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS With reference to the drawing, there is shown and illustrated a travel bag constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention and designated generally by reference character 10.

This bag consists of a generally rectangular sack made of pliant or semi-rigid material and formed of a 'vinyl transparent front wall 12,

Except for front wall 12, the sack may be made of duck cloth or canvas or the like stitched, glued or otherwise secured together.

The top wall 22 is provided with a zipper 24 extending horizontally nearly the entire length of the bag so as to provide substantially free access to the interior thereof and the compartments therein.

34, 36, 38 and 40. Spaced above bottom wall 20 is shelf 44 which extends the entire length of the bag. These partitions and the shelf may be of the same material as the sack or may be of stiffer material, such as plywood, cardboard or poly methyl methacrylate and are secured together as are the other elements of the bag.

As clearly shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, the various partitions and shelf 44 form a plurality of internal compartments. Thus

34 and 26 are joined at the upper end of the latter while the lower end is secured to shelf 44 to form with side wall 20 a passport compartment closed by vertical zipper 46. Adjacent to this compartment is a shorter but wider-thermos bottle compartment defined by partition 36 closed by horizontal zipper 48, and by vertical partition 28. Partition 28 can either go through an opening or slot (not shown) made for it in shelf 44, or else be made in two parts with the lower part extending between the underside of shelf 44 and bottom wall 20 to define the compartment labelled binoculars in FIG. 3.

30 and 32 define a still shorter rapid" compartment closed by zipper 52. As shown, partition 32 extends to the top of the bag whereits upper end is fixed to top wall 22 to form with shelf44 a closed top umbrella compartment with vcrtical zipper 54. The lower end or part of partition 30 forms with shelf 44 and side wall 20 a third bottom compartment labelled film.

The three bottom compartments are closed by the same horizontal zipper 56.

It will be seen that the two outer compartmentsextend for nearly substantially the entire height of the sack above shelf 44 andfurthermore are designed to hold shock resistant articles while the adjacent inner compartments may hold more fragile articles. This arrangement provides protection to the items in the inner compartments.

A single shoulder strap or handle 58 extending from one side wall to the other and is pivoted by pins 60 to eyelets fixed to the top of these walls. Since, with the advent of unisex fashions, both men and women carry handbags of various sizes and shapes it will be evident that the foregoing described embodiment is suitable for both sexes. If desired, however, the carrying strap may be made shorter and more closely resembling a valise handle.

In use, the three central compartment may be reached byunzippering top horizontal zipper 2.4, and then, if access to any of these compartments is desired, their respective zipper is unzippered. Operation of the outer compartments is self-evident.

It will be seen that some useful space is available above the top of the inner compartments. This can be used for various small articles which generally do not need to be organized in a bag, such as kerchiefs, toothbrushes, bandaids, etc. and even clothing.

Naturally, the bag of the invention and its compartments may be manufactured in any size desired.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a travel article in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of 5 the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A travel bag comprising front and rear walls; opposed side walls; top and bottom walls forming a sack; a plurality of horizontal and vertical partitions in said sack; a horizontal shelf extending between said end walls spaced above said bottom wall and defining bottom compartments with some of said partitions and said bottom wall; and a zipper extending along said bottom wall to close said bottom compartments; a plurality of inner compartments formed by said horizontal and vertical partitions and said shelf, a zipper closing the top of each of said inner compartments; a pair of outer vertical compartments on either side of said inner compartments, one of said compartments being defined by a part of said top wall, said shelf, one of said vertical partitions and said side wall; said one compartment having a vertical zipper for closing same; said other outer compartment being defined at its top by one of said horizontal partitions, at its bottom by said shelf and at its sides by one of said side walls and by one of said vertical partitions, a vertical zipper for closing said other compartment; a horizontal zipper extending substantially the length of said sack in said top wall for gaining access to said inner compartments and a handle extending above said top wall and secured to the top of said side walls.

2. The bag of claim 1 wherein said front wall is transparent.
