ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 18, 1941 CONTAINER Thomas F. Brennan, Valhalla, N. Y., assignor to American Can Company, New York, N. Y., a, corporation of New Jersey Application June 15, 1939, Serial No. 279,352
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to containers and the like and has particular reference to a container in which a paint brush after being used, may be suspended in a liquid for preserving the brush.
An object of the invention is the provision of an improved container for holding a liquid in which a paint brush may be held suspended so that the brush may be kept soft even when filled with paint, the container being designed to prevent evaporation of the liquid and yet permit quick and easy removal of the brush therefrom for use.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the instant invention, the view showing a paint brush held suspended in the con-- tainer;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a cover for the container.
As a preferred embodiment of the invention the drawing illustrates a container ll having a removable cover I2 which is adapted to hold a paint brush I 3 or the like suspended in a suitable liquid, such as turpentine, Water, brush cleaner, or other suitable fluid retained in the container. The container preferably includes a rectangular shaped tubular body l5 having a bottom closure [6 secured thereto in a suitable seam H. The upper edge of the body is preferably provided with an outwardly bent curled edge I8.
The cover I2 is preferably of the friction plug type having a rectangular shape so that it will fit the top open end of the body 15. For this purpose the cover is provided with a flat bottom wall section or countersunk panel 2| which merges into upright friction Walls or flanges 22 which are adapted to fit tightly against the side walls of the body when the cover is in place on the container. The upper edges of the flanges terminate in an outwardly bent curled edge 23 which seats against the body curled edge l8 when the cover is in place and thus serves as a stop for the cover when the latter is pushed down tight on the container.
The panel 2i of the cover is formed with an oblong or non-circular opening 25 which is adapted to receive the handle of the brush l3. The panel around this opening is turned down in a flange seat 26.
In using the container the cover I2 is first pried off by inserting a tool between the curled edges I8, 23 and the handle of the brush is then inserted into the opening 25 from the bottom side of the cover. An oblong or non-circular washer element 28 preferably made of rubber or other resilient material is then pushed over the outer end of the handle in telescoping fashion from the top side of the cover.
The brush is then inserted into the container body which holds the liquid and the cover is replaced on the container. Such replacement of the cover permits the brush to slip down into the container until the washer element 28 comes in contact with the cover. seats itself against the flange seat 26 around the cover opening 25 and thereby closes 01f this opening and thus prevents evaporation of the liquid therethrough while holding the brush in a suspended position within the container.
The brush may be held at any desired depth in the liquid within the container by adjustment the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A container for holding liquids and for retaining a paint brush or the like suspended in the 7 liquid, comprising in' combination, a container having a removable closure provided with an opening for the insertion of the handle of a brush, and an annular flexible washer element insertable over the end of the brush handle and.
in its operative position being of inverted frustoconical configuration frictionally resting in said opening to hold the brush in suspended position within said container.
THOMAS F. BRENNAN.
