This invention relates to portable cases or containers and in particular to portable cases comprising a pair of hingedly united sections, and in which various articles may be conveniently carried, and disposed for convenient access when the case is opened.

While I have disclosed my invention as ap plied to a combination cigarette and vanity case, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to this particular type of container, and that as to certain phases thereof my invention may have other applications.

Among the objects of my invention is the provision of a portable case in which various articles may be conveniently and compactly accommo dated in such a way that they will be securely held, will be effectively separated from each other, and yet will be disposed so as to be readily available for use, and further the provision in a portable case of a mirror comprising a plurality of sections, and also a mirror having portions thereof adapted to extend beyond the con fines of the case, the provision in a portable case of a mirror having a main section and auxiliary sections so associated with the main mirror that they are adapted to form extensions thereof, and.

thereby in effect form a single mirror of an area exceeding that of the main mirror, the provision in a portable case of a main mirror and auxiliary mirrors adapted to be positioned to the sides thereof and at an angle thereto, the provision in a portable case having hinged superposed sections, of a section which is of sufficient depth to accommodate a plurality of mirrors in superposed relation within the confines thereof, and

the provision in a portable case, as just described, of a section of suflicient depth to accommodate not only the mirrors, but also brackets adapted to receive a comb or other article.

For the attainment of these objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear or be pointed out, I have disclosed one embodiment of my invention in the drawing in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vanity case, constructed in accordance with my invention, in closed position;

Figure 2 is a sectional view on a greatly enlarged scale, taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the vanity case of Figure 1, similar to Figure 1, but with the cover open, and with the auxiliary mirrors carried by the cover in their unfolded position.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will PATENT OFFiCE PORTABLE C'ASE OR CONTAINER Harold Frederick Magnus, London, England Application September 2, 1936, Serial No. 99,040 In Great Britain December 12, 1935 be observed that my case is shown therein by way of example as compn'singyin general, a pair of complementary sections l0 and I 2, of flattened form and with upstanding side walls, and adapted to form a closed compartment, and, as clearly the case by a transverse partition I4 while a second compartment 20 is arranged for the reception of vanity articles. A small compartment 24 in which a lipstick may be conveniently carried, is separated from the compartment 20 by a partition 22. The compartment 20 is provided with shallow trays or pans adapted for the reception of powder, and rouge, these not being shown in detail but merely indicated, and a cover 26, shown as hinged at 28, is shown as adapted to be superposed over this compartment.

A member 30, shown as hinged at 32 to the frame is is adapted for retaining the cigarettes in place, and in order that it may effectively perform this function the hinge 32 may be made of the spring type, so that the member 30 will be caused to press downagainst the cigarettes located in the compartment IS.

The cover I 0, as will be observed from Figure 2, is shown as having a mirror 38 mounted in the bottom thereof, and for the purpose of retaining this mirror a frame I5 is shown as inserted into the cover. This frame is shown as having portions running along the side walls of the cover, and other portions angularly related thereto and adapted to overlie the rim of the mirror. The frame 15 may be held in place within the cover Ill in any suitable or preferred manner. The cover In is shown as deep enough to accommodate a pair of movable auxiliary mirrors 40, shown as mounted on hinges 42 on the frame I5 and adapted to be folded into superposed relation to the mirror 38. The hinges 42 are shown as of the spring type, the springs thereof being indicated at 44, and are so arranged that when the cover is opened and the mirrors 40 are released, the spring hinges will cause the mirrors 40 automatically to move outwardly into the position indicated in Figure 3, in which they stand at an angle to the main mirror 38, and in which position they eil'ectively supplement the main mirror 38 to give an extended field of view. It will be understood that stops of any suitable or preferred type may be provided to prevent movement; of the mirrors 40 beyond this angular position. The mirror 38 is shown as of an elongated rectangular shape and the mirrors 40 at the narrow ends thereof, whereby a reflecting surface of relatively great lateral extent, although relatively narrow, is formed, which is i found very desirable for the intended purpose.

Carried by the hinge II that unites the base and the cover I0 and 12 are shown apair of members 34 in the form of channeled brackets,

, that are adapted to receive a comb, indicated at 36, and these members are adapted to fold into the cover I, as clearly appears from Figure 2, and to be superposed over the mirrors 40,. and over the base l2.

Forcausing the baseand cover In .and I2 to remain securely in a closed position, I have provided a locking member or clip 46, shown as hinged to the base-member I2, nearv the bottom thereof, and it will be observed that all portions of thehinge thereof are indicated as. positioned within the contour of the base. The member 46 is. shown as having an angularly disposed portion adapted to overlie the cover I0 and as provided with an opening 48; and the cover In is shown as provided with a raised portion 50, complementary .to the opening 48, and these respective parts are adapted to interengage and prevent displacement of the member 46, when it is in its locking'position, with its bent'portion 41 superposed over the cover.

From the foregoing description of the illustrative embodiment thereof, the many desirable featuresof my invention will be apparent. When .the coveris raised, after release of the locking member, the mirrors 40'willunfold outwardly and afford a wide reflecting surface in which a large portion of the face can be conveniently viewed. At the same time the comb and the lipstick are accessible, and by moving the brackets 34- about their hinge, the comb may be positioned out of, the .way; so thatthe rouge and powder compartment may be opened. The contents of the .cigarette compartment are available 'even-without'raising the comb, although by raising the comb the cigarettes may be more readily removed. It will be observed that the comb, when in'the: position of Figure 3, assists the. member 30 in retaining the cigarettes in the compart- .ment- 1 6p greater-variety of .finish'es is possible, and wherebyan attractive appearance for the interior of the case is assured.

It will also be obvious that instead of the arti-' cles I have shown in the case, that is, the cigarettes, powder, comb, etc., other articles may be disposed therein, and the size, shape, disposition of parts, and relative dimensions of the case may be varied. For example, the base may be made of a depth suflicient to receive brushes or other articles as used in a set on a dresing or other table, and the sidewalls of the containercan be made as a support for the additional-mirrors and move to the outer side when the container is opened.

While therefore I have herein disclosed one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understoodthat the samemay be embodied in many forms, and that I do not limit myself to the particular embodiment disclosed herein, nor limit myself in any other way than as called for by the prior art.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l.In aicontainer comprising a pair of complementary sections hingedly united, one of said sections being, of tray-like. form and havingv a main wall and side Walls upstanding therefrom, a mirror positioned within said tray-like section and overlying its main wall, a rectangular frame positioned within said tray-like section and having portions thereof in contact with the upstanding side walls of said tray-like section, and said frame having other portions thereof adapted to engage. the rim portions of said mirror said frame serving toretain said mirror within the tray-like section, a pair of auxiliary mirrors and hinge means uniting each of said auxiliary mirrors with said frame in such a position that said auxiliary mirrors maybe folded into an overlyingrelation with said first mentioned mirror or into a position whereby they form lateral extensions of the reflecting surface of said first mentioned mirror;

In a container comprising a pair of compie mentary sections hingedly united, one of said sections; being of tray-like form andhaving a main Wall-and side walls upstanding therefrom, a mir-- ror positioned withinsaid tray-like sectionand overlying its mainwa-ll, a rectangular frame positioned within said tray-like section: and having portions thereof in contactwith the upstanding side-walls of said tray-like section, said frame having other portions thereof adapted to overlie the rim-portions of saidmirror and said frame with its overlying portionsbeing adapted to retainsaid mirror in place within the tray-like section, a pair of auxiliary mirrors and spring hinge means uniting each of said auxiliary mirrors with said frame, each of said hinge means having its axis positioned on the edge of said frame and parallel to anedge; of said first mentioned mirror and said auxiliary mirror;
