VENTILATIN'G GARMENT-SHIELD;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 30, 1919.
Application filed October 19, 1918. Serial No. 258,832.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW WV. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Garment-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a garment shield or bellows ventilating protector for applying perfect ventilation to the armpits and surrounding portions of the body and garments of the wearer.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment shield capable of being worn on the person in position to eject perfumed, powdered or medicated air, with the natural movement of the arms or body, which will operate the bellows portion of the shield so as to force the air out of said bellows through the openings in the top of the shield.
Another object of-my invention is to pro vide an armpit shield so arranged in construction, that the inner and outer walls of the fla s are so spaced as to form an air receptac e for cooling, ventilating and perfumin'g purposes by the natural movement of the arms or body.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bellows arrangement which can be applied to brassieres, corsets, coats or any other garments, attached thereto or detached therefrom, so as to protect the garments against perspiration and objectionable odors.
The above objects I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of my improved shield applied to the body.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a modification of my garment shield.
The reference characters designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the shield properfas applied to the under arm and can be made any suitable size or form provided with the two usual flaps 1 and 2, one of which can be made much shorter than the other as shown.
The shield consists of an inner and outer covering of a suitable waterproof material, such as rubber, rubberized cloth, oiled silk or any other suitable material, and so arranged that the spaces 3 between the walls or covering will form a pocket for the bellows portion 4, whereby the ordinary movement of the arms or body will force the air out in a cooling, perfumed or medicated form.
The shield is open at several places along the top as indicated at 5 and may be provided with holes 6 on its sides as shown in the drawings.
In Fig. 2 I show the arrangement of the bellows pockets situated between the outer and inner covering, when necessary this can be made as part of the outer covering according to the mode of manufacturing. When made in this small form it can be secured to the ordinary shield-brassiere, corset, .dress or coat to be used if preferable for ventilating and cooling purposes only with the top edge fastened together between openings 5, in any suitable form or bellows portion 4: can be made separate and fastened to the upper edge or outer covering as indicated at air openings 5, or if necessary fastened onto or between walls or linings of shields, corsets, dresses, coats or other garments.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification of my shield in which the bellows arrangement can be made and used in the cheaper grades of garment shields. The bellows or air container is the spaces 7 of the wall portions between the outer and inner covering of the shield flaps l and 2.
The openings 5 at the top of the shield allow for access to the bellows portion so that powder, perfume or medicated preparations may be placed in the pocket or pockets of the bellows sections and by the natural movements of the arms or body, it will tend to compress the bellows and it will force the air or perfumed powder through the openings 5 or. holes 6, thereby eliminating the 0bjectionable odors from perspiration.
The shield may be provided with the usual shoulder straps 8 and brace straps 9 or may be fastened to the inner or outer garments in the usual manner of sewing, safety pins or snap fasteners.
There, has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired confine the inventiqn to the exact form hereinshown and described,,but it is wished to include all such as prqperly come within the scope claimed.
VVha-t I claim as my inventi-on anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. A garment vshield having inner and outer flaps, and a bellcws device between said.
.3. A. garment shield having inner and V outer double walled :flaps, and 'abellows carmay saidshield between thewalls of said 15 5% A garment shield having inner and outer flaps joined at their tops,' and a bellows betweensaid flaps, said shield being prQvided with Openings at the junction and 20 through the upper portions of the fiaps. 7
In testimony whereof I aifix' my signature in the presence of two Witnesses- Witnesses: i
. V...G., ERQNAPPEL, G. M.GREER.
