ROPE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Application filed October 28, 1915. Serial No. 58,420.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD G. SMART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Wood and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope- Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact, description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rope clamps and more particularly to clamps for fastening two or more ropes or wire cables together.
The mainobject of the invention is to provide an improved rope clamp which may be used with ropes of all kinds without danger of injury to the same, and which is capable of exerting a powerful clamping action of equal force on both sides of the ropes in connection with which this device is used. I
Another object of theiinvention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, eflicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with this invention, showing the same applied to use in clamping two ropes; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the clamping bar or follower of this improved clamp.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the yoke or rope receiving member of this improved clamp which is substantially U-shaped in "form having ,a pair of arms 2 and a suitable seat 3 therebetween for receiving the rope R as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The free ends of the arms 2 are threaded on their outer sides as at 4, for a purpose hereinafter I I to described.
The movable member of the clamp comprises a T-shaped member composed of a transverse clamping bar or follower 5 having a neck portion 6 extending laterally therefrom, the edges of the latter being extended at their free ends to form a pair of projections or tongues 7. The neck portion 6 of the clamping member is inserted through the opening .8 in a nut 9, and the tongues 7, which are preferably of pliable material, are struck outwardly. By this arrangement it may be seen that the clamping bar 5 and nut 9 are maintained in movable assembled relation as most clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
In operation the ropes to be clamped are inserted between the arms 2 of the yoke 1, and the nut 9 is screwed on the threaded ends 4 of the arms 2, the clamping bar 5 sliding between the latter and engaging the upper rope as shown. The ropes are thus firmly clamped together.
It is obvious that the clamping bar 5 may be of various constructions. The tongues 7 may be integral with the. neck portion 6 as shown or they may be carried by a separate plate riveted to the upper edge of said neck.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, it may be seen that a substantially two piece rope clamp has been provided which has the advantage over the commonly used rope clamp, in that by having a single nut inserted on both arms of the yoke member, an equal force is exerted thereupon, and the nut travels with the same speed on both arms.
.The device will obviously be very advantageous and indispensable for use by persons desiring to apply such a clamp under such circumstances as would be inconvenient to assemble a large number of loose parts,
such as'by linemen at the tops of telegraph poles, and the like. 4
Various changes in form and proportion may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other-than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a U-shaped' rope receiving yoke having its arms externally threaded, a nut movable on said arms, a T-shaped rope clamping member having its transverse portion slidable between said arms and its neck portion extending into the opening in said nut, and projections extending outwardly from said neck portion for maintaining said nut and said member in movable assembled relation.
2. A device of the class described comprising a U-shaped rope receiving yoke having its arms externally threaded, a nut movable on said arms, a T-shaped rope clamping member having its transverse portion slidablebetween said arms and its neck portion extending into the opening in said nut, and
tongues of pliablematerial struck outwardly from the opposite edges of the free end of said neck portion for maintaining said nut 15 and said member in movable assembled relation.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit-
