DOOR-SPRING.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial No. 694,856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FELIX J. TOUSSAINT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ford City, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a door spring which comprises, essentially, a door engaging element adapted to automatically close a door after the same has been opened, said element being pivotally connected to a supporting rod and adapted to be swung to an inoperative position.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of the door with the invention applied thereto, the same being shown in plan, dotted lines showing its inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention, the door being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters designate similar parts, 5 indicates a door of the ordinary well known construction and 6 the casing thereof. A supporting rod 7 is arranged longitudinally of the casing 6 to which the door is hinged and is provided at its ends with enlarged flat portions 8 which are adapted to be secured to said casing by means of suitable fasteners 9, the rod 7 being bent as indicated at 10 in order to space the main portion thereof from the casing. A substantially U- shaped pivot plate 11 is provided at its inner end with a circular portion 12 which is adapted to engage the rod. 7 medially the ends thereof and secured between the sections of said plate by means of the rivets 13 is a spacing block 1a which has its outer edge curved as indicated at 15. An arm 16 is provided at one end with an enlarged circular portion 17 which is adapted to be pivotally mounted between the sections of the copies of this patent may be obtained for plate 11 by means of the pin 18, said portion 17 being adapted to snugly engage the curved surface 15 of the block 14 and the in; ner faces of the plate 11, whereby the friction therebetween will be sufhcient to support the arm 16 in a horizontal position. The free end of the arm 16 is bifurcated to provide the spaced bearing flanges 19 having a shaft 20 transversely mounted therein and rotatably mounted upon said shaft is awheel 21 which is adapted to engage the door 5 when the arm 16 is in an operative position.
The free ends of a coil spring 23 which is coiled about the rod 7 on each side of the plate 11 are secured to said rod, said spring being provided medially of its ends with a laterally projecting angular extension 24 which is adapted to engage the outer section of the plate 11 whereby upon the opening of the door 5 the tension of said spring against the said plate will cause the door to automatically recede to its closing position.
By reason of the fact that the arm 16 is pivoted in the plate 11, it will be obvious that when it is desired to retain the door in an open position, said arm may be swung to a position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that the invention contemplates providing a door spring which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is The combination with a door and a frame, of a rod secured to the frame, a pivot plate rotatably mounted on the rod spring means for exerting pressure upon said plate, an operating arm pivotally connected to the plate for movement at right angles to the movement of the plate on the rod, whereby the arm in operation may be turned at any desired angle to the plate to vary the operative effect of the spring with respect to the door.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FELIX J. TOUSSAINT.
