Description

W. CONWAY.
CLASP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 17, 1912.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
WILLIAM CONWAY, OIE' MONTCLAIR HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY.
CLASP.
Application filed September 17, 1912.
To all whom t may concern:
Re it known that I, lVILLmM CONWAY, a citizen et' the United States, residing at lriontclair Heights, in the county oit Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful I'nfiprovements in tllasps, ot which the following is a speci tication.
lvly invention relates to a clasp designed more particuladly for use as a collar fastener, and is intended to take the place ot' the usual stud in the front buttonhole ot' a shirt neck-band.
The invention will be understood by reiter-ence to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l, is a side elevation ot my device with the parts in open position, the collar ends and a portion of the shirt being in section; Fig. 9., a vertical section, the parts ot' the device in position when being closed; Fig. 3, a similar view with the parts closed; Fig. Ll, a front View of a portion oi a collar with the device in position holding the collar in place; and Figs. 5 and G, peru spective views of the two parts of the device.
Similar reference numerals indicate similar parts in the several views.
The device is made of metal, preferably thin spring steel, and consists of a substantially U-shaped member having a plate 1 with a longitudinal slot 2, and a turned-up spring tongue 3, said member embracing and being slidably mounted upon a similarly shaped stationary member having clamping aws and held by a button in the buttonhole oit the neck band of a shirt. The part which receivesthe ends to be clamped together comprises a base 4 having guide lugs 5, and a stud button 6. The plate l oi the movable member is adapted to slide over the back ot' the base 4 between the lugs 5, the stud button G projecting through the slot 2 in the. said plate and adapted to be inserted and held in the button hole of the shirtneck-band. At its lower eiid the base or lixed aw l is formed with an angular part T to which is hinged a plate S, constituting the movable jaw ot the clamp, the latter having an extension 9 projecting below the hinge.
W hen the collar l() is to be fastened in place, the device is arranged with the stud 6 in the buttonhole ot' the shirt neck-band ll and with the parts in the position shown in Fig. l, the free ends of the collar are in- Specication of Letters Patent.

SeriaI No. 720,823.
serted between the plate lo1 unged `law 8 and the base or fixed jaw fl. ',lhe clasp is then closed by pressing against the lower end of the spring tongue 55, causing the parts to tirst assume the position shown in Fig. 2, and tinally that shown in Fig. 3, in which the spring tongue 3 forces the plate 8 toward the base el to hold the ends oft the collar securely between said plate and base. The plate and the base are provided with prongs 'l2 to prevent slipping oli the collar ends. When the collar is to be released, the wearer merely pulls down on the finger piece 18 at the end oit the tongue 3 so that the plate l is pulled down relative to the base l and plate 8, until the end of the spring tongue 3 strikes the projection 9 on the clamping plate S, which will result in the clamping plate being` thrown outward to the position shown in Fig. l, and the collar ends thereby released.
With this device the usual buttonholes in the collar ends are not used. The object is to clamp the collar in the desired position, or in a position to lit properly, without it being necessary to pull the collar together by tightening up the necletie when the lat* ter is tied.
Although I have described my invention as designed more particularly for use as a collar fastener it is to be understood that it is capable of use in other connections and for other purposes.
Wlhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A device ot the character described com prising a base having a stud button secured thereto, a (,flamping jaw hinged on said. base, and a member embracing said base and jaw and slidably mounted on said base, said member having a spring tongue bearing against said jaw to positively close and open it when said member is moved.
2. A device o't` the character described comprising a base having a stud button secured thereto, a clamping jaw hinged on said base, and a movable member comprising av plate having a slot through which said button projects, and a spring tongue bent upward from said slotted plate and bearing against said clamping jaw to positively close and open it when said member is moved.
3. A device ot' the character described comprising a base -having a stud button secured thereto, a clamping jaw hinged 0n said llmsesaid jaw having an extension below signed my name in the presence oit two subthe hmge, and a member embracing said soribing Witnesses.
Ease and jawand slidahiy mounted on seid VILLAM CONWAY use, sind member having a spring tongue 5 hearing against said jaw to positively close iVitnesses:
and open it when said member is moved. M. E. MGNINoI-I,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto CHARLES S. JONES.
