Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of metallurgy of non-ferrous metals and can be used in the manufacture of ingots of high-purity molybdenum of high metallurgical quality and sheet metal from high-purity molybdenum for use in microelectronics, quantum electronics and electrical engineering.
This metal is of significant interest due to its unique capabilities when applied in high technologies, for example, in electrical engineering, microelectronics, nanoelectronics, avionics, etc., as critical structural elements and materials. However, the use of molybdenum is often difficult due to the impossibility of realizing its natural physicochemical properties due to the relatively high content of interstitial and substitution impurities. An increase in purity should lead to the realization of properties such as corrosion resistance, ductility, machinability during mechanical and deformation processing, for example during forging, rolling, pressing and cutting. The tendency of molybdenum to intercrystalline brittleness and low technological plasticity during high-temperature deformation processing is a consequence of the segregation of interstitial impurities, the formation of second-phase inclusions at grain boundaries and the weakening of cohesion between grains. Technological plasticity of cast molybdenum is determined by the specific area of the intergranular surface per unit volume of polycrystalline material. At temperatures below the brittle-viscous transition, fracture begins from cracks propagating along the grain or boundaries, and is the result of segregation of impurities along the grain boundaries. Two mechanisms for eliminating intercrystalline fragility are known: (1) the binding of impurities and alloying elements in the allocation of the second phase with a certain morphology and (2) the redistribution of interstitial impurities between the grain volume and boundaries. A fundamentally different approach to reducing the relative concentration of impurities at grain boundaries is to reduce the absolute content of impurities — obtaining high-purity metals when the concentration of impurities at grain boundaries does not reach an “embrittlement” level. Since oxygen (oxides) and carbon play the main role in embrittlement of molybdenum embrittlement, it is necessary to reduce their concentration in every possible way, for example by vacuum refining or deoxidation (binding to oxides). It is believed that the purification of these metals from oxygen during electron beam melting is not effective enough, therefore, the generally accepted practice for producing technologically advanced molybdenum ingots should be alloying with additives of various elements (rhenium, iron, nickel, titanium, zirconium, rare-earth metals), i.e. in obtaining various alloys. In this case, due to the modification of the structure, increase in the solubility of the second phase and redistribution of the second phase, the possibilities of high-temperature deformation processing expand. The introduction of carbon or boron leads to a significant decrease in grain size and, as a consequence, a decrease in the sensitivity of molybdenum to low-temperature intercrystalline brittleness.
Industrial low-alloy molybdenum-based alloys are deoxidized or modified materials of relatively low purity, often referred to as “technical”. Although such purity is quite acceptable for many technical applications, the emergence of new areas of technology (microelectronics, quantum electronics, etc.) puts forward much more stringent requirements for both the purity of molybdenum and its manufacturability, eliminating the use of existing technologies and materials.
The closest analogue in terms of the combination of essential features and purpose is (Zelikman A.N. Metallurgy of refractory metals. M: Metallurgy, 1986, p.214-216), which disclosed a method of producing high purity molybdenum, including vacuum refining by electron beam remelting (ELP) to obtain an ingot and vacuum arc melting (DVP) of the obtained ingot in an electric arc furnace with a mold.
The disadvantages of the prototype are the following circumstances. The difference in the technological plasticity of ingots of single and double remelts consists primarily in the high content of interstitial impurities and a large number of metallurgical defects in single electron beam or electric arc remelts that facilitate crack formation. The introduction of deoxidizers and modifiers leads to the appearance of a large number of additional crystallization centers in the melt, the redistribution of impurities on a highly developed intergranular surface, and more efficient deoxidation. Different oxidation of the metal leads to the fact that part of the metal turns out to be deoxidized, part doped with carbon or other elements, and part even non-deoxidized. It is not possible to eliminate this heterogeneity during a single remelting. Carrying out the second remelting allows eliminating metallurgical defects arising during the first remelting and obtaining an ingot with a more uniform structure. Nevertheless, the sizes of the formed grains in the ingot of the second remelting, carried out in an electric arc furnace, are still quite large and do not allow deformation processing of this material without technological problems.
The technical task is to improve the quality and stability of the physico-mechanical characteristics of molybdenum by obtaining ingots of high purity and optimal macrostructure.
This is achieved by the fact that in the method of producing high purity molybdenum, which includes vacuum refining by electron beam remelting to obtain an ingot and vacuum arc melting of the obtained ingot in an electric arc furnace with a crystallizer, electron-beam refining is performed on ceramic-metal preforms prepared from molybdenum powder and at a speed of 0.5-0.6 kg / min, and vacuum arc melting is carried out with intense electromagnetic stirring when exposed to the melt magnetic field with the formation of a fine-grained structure in high purity molybdenum ingots, while the ratio between the diameters of the electron beam remelting ingots and the vacuum arc melting is d 1 / d 2 = 0.6. The formation of a fine-grained structure during solidification of the melt is carried out under intense exposure to the melt of an electromagnetic field using a solenoid mounted on a vertical mold of an electric arc furnace.
The method is as follows.
Ceramic billets prepared by pressing molybdenum powders are placed in a melting chamber of an electron beam furnace, the chamber is evacuated to create a vacuum, and then ceramic billets are gradually melted with an axial gun, bringing them under the electron beam created by the axial gun. The electron-beam remelting rate of metal-ceramic preforms is low due to intense gas evolution and is 0.5-0.6 kg / min. An increase in the smelting speed of metal-ceramic workpieces is accompanied by an increase in the pressure of residual gases in the melting chamber and a loss of power of the electron beam, which negatively affects the quality of the ingots. In addition, during the first remelting of cermet billets, pieces of the charge fall into the melt. The average grain size in single remelting ingots is usually 5-6 mm. Many metallurgical defects: gas pores, non-melts, cracks. Ingots of pure molybdenum of high metallurgical quality are obtained as a result of double remelting: the second remelting is performed in an electric arc vacuum unit with intensive electromagnetic mixing of the melt. To create a longitudinal electromagnetic field, a direct current solenoid is used, wound on a cooling jacket of a vertical crystallizer. The electromagnetic field of the solenoid stabilizes the burning of the arc and prevents the transfer of the arc to the walls of the mold. The rotation of the melt resulting from this contributes to a decrease in the temperature gradient, averaging of the chemical composition and the formation of a fine-grained structure due to the destruction of crystallites and the appearance of additional crystallization centers.
An example implementation of the method. The implementation of the method was carried out upon receipt of technological ingots of high purity molybdenum. As a starting material, cermet preforms prepared from high purity molybdenum powder (5N) were used. The first vacuum remelting at a melting speed of 0.6 kg / min for the purpose of deep cleaning was performed by the EBL method and ingots with a diameter of 80 mm were obtained (electron beam parameters: voltage 25 kV, current 4 A, power 100 kW) in high vacuum. Next, a second vacuum remelting was carried out using the fiberboard method with a speed of 2.6-3.1 kg / min (stable electric arc parameters: 37 V, current 5 kA, power 180 kW) and obtained ingots with a diameter of 120 mm and a length of 1500 mm. When conducting double remelting by the method of electric arc melting in a vertical crystallizer, the melt was mixed using the electromagnetic field of the solenoid (the period of action in the forward and reverse directions is 5 s) installed around a water-cooled crystallizer. At low currents (1 A), the macrostructure is characterized by long grains (up to 60 mm) with an average grain size of 4 mm, inclined to the axis of the ingot at an angle of 15 °. With a large mixing current (up to 5 A), the grain length does not exceed 15 mm, and their average size in diameter is 2 mm. The concentrations of carbon and oxygen in high-purity molybdenum double remelting (EBM + DVP) are presented in Table 1 and indicate that no significant contamination of the metal occurs.
Microfractographic analysis of samples of cast double remelted molybdenum was carried out on samples with a size of 15 × 15 × 50 mm 3 (notched) using a scanning electron microscope. A mixed nature of fracture with a significant predominance of transcrystalline was revealed: cracks passed through the body of the grains, slightly changing their course at the grain boundaries.
Deformation processing of double remelted molybdenum ingots was carried out at 1200 ° С with a degree of deformation of 75%. The pressed billets were subjected to recrystallization annealing and rolled at 1500–800 ° C onto a 1 mm thick sheet. After annealing, stress relieving was performed by warm rolling of the sheet to a thickness of 0.3 mm with a degree of deformation of 70%. According to microstructural analysis, recrystallization of double remelting molybdenum occurs in the temperature range 900-1100 ° С.
The results of mechanical testing of samples from sheet (0.3 mm) double remelted molybdenum are presented in Table 2. The samples were cut along and across the rolling direction. The data in Table 2 for recrystallized high-purity double-remelted molybdenum indicate its high ductility. Some discrepancies in elongation values along and across the rolling direction are explained by the fact that the samples were obtained without cross rolling. Considering that molybdenum is characterized by a sharp loss of ductility while lowering the treatment temperature below room temperature (cold brittleness), mechanical tensile tests were carried out in the temperature range from 200 to -192 ° С. Preliminarily, the samples were subjected to vacuum annealing for 30 min to relieve stresses. High-purity double remelting molybdenum has a fairly high ductility and strength even at low temperatures. It should be noted that high-temperature, warm and cold deformation processing of double remelted molybdenum ingots in almost all cases took place without comment, and the quality of rolled products was consistently high.
Thus, the production of high-quality technological ingots and thin sheets from high-purity double-remelted molybdenum in accordance with this proposal has shown the advantages of using this material to produce rolled products from high-purity molybdenum. The proposed method for producing high purity molybdenum allows smelting massive ingots having high technological plasticity for various types of processing, due to the significantly higher purity of the optimal macrostructure in comparison with powder products or once melted using electron beam melting.
