Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled resin outstanding in water-absorption characteristics and gel strength, useful as e.g. sanitary articles, by treating powdery water-absorptive resin using each specific aluminum compound and crosslinking agent in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol and water. CONSTITUTION:The objective resin can be obtained by treating, in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. ethylene glycol, propanediol, hexanetriol) and water, powdery water-absorptive resin carrying carboxyl or carboxylate group (e.g. polyacrylic acid, copolymer from acrylic acid and acrylic acid salt) using an aluminum compound reactive with said water-absorptive resin (e.g. aluminum hydroxide gel formed by reaction between an aluminum salt and aluminate) and a crosslinking agent having two or more functional groups reactive with said resin (e.g. ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether).
