Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent trouble generation caused by wrinkle formation of a cation exchange membrane, in electrolyzing an aqueous KCl solution by using said cation exchange membrane treated with ethylenediamine, by a method wherein said exchange membrane is immersed in water or an aqueous KOH solution and, thereafter, mounted in an electrolytic tank. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous KCl solution is electrolyzed by using a cation exchange membrane obtained by treating a cathode side surface of a fluorocarbon type cation exchange membrane having a sulphonic acid group as an ion exchange group with ethylenediamine. In this case, the cation exchange membrane is preliminarily immersed in water or an aqueous KOH solution and, when extension of the exchange membrane caused by water absorption and swelling is reached to 3-7%, it is mounted in an electrolytic tank. In electrolysis, the aqueous KCl solution of which a total concn. of Ca, Mg is 0.05mg/l or less is used and electrolysis is carried out while a KCl concn. of the aqueous KCl solution in an anode chamber is held at 150g/l or more and a KOH concn. of the aqueous KOH solution in a cathode chamber is held at 20-28wt%. Troubles such that the exchange membrane is contacted with a cathode due to wrinkle generation and damaged or gas bubble is accumulated and a tank voltage is raised are not generated.
