Abstract

PURPOSE:To permit the manufacture of a membrane at room temperature by using a specific swelling agent in the manufacture of a reverse osmotic membrane from a cast liquid containing a cellulose ester, a solvent, and a swelling agent. CONSTITUTION:As a swelling agent, a compound of the formula I (where R is H or a C1-C4 aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may have one hydroxyl group), e.g., one or more selected from trimellitic acid and the addition products of trimellitic anhydride with a C1-C4 aliphatic monoalcohol or glycol is used. For example, a cast liquid is obtained by a procedure in which a blend of cellulose acetate and cellulose triacetate is mixed with acetone and 1,4-dioxane to form a dope, and then the dope is mixed with an aqueous or methanol solution of trimellitic acid. The cast liquid is flowed over a glass plate, allowed to stand in an atmosphere of 25 deg.C and 35% (relative humidity), for example, for 45sec, dipped in ice water for gelation, and then treated in hot water to obtain a reverse osmotic membrane.
