Abstract

704,091. Wire couplings. BRANDT, J. (Brandt, E.). July 3, 1952 [April 5, 1951], No. 7960/51. Class 99 (1). [Also in Groups XXV and XXXVI] A wire or like connector comprises a sleeve 10, Fig. 1, the bore 11 of which is longitudinally divided by a strip 12 bent over at the ends to retain in each half-bore a clamping element 14 of half-conical shape with a serrated channel 15 facing the strip 12. The sum of the crosssectional dimensions of the strip and the elements at their widest ends is greater than the 'diameter of the bore 11 so that on insertion of cables through the open ends of the half-bores into the elements 14 and the subsequent application of tension thereto, the cables are wedged against the strip. Screws passing through the bent-over ends of the strip may be used to exert or maintain clamping pressure on the elements 14, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ends of the sleeve are shaped to guide the cables and serrations are also provided on the strip. Figs. 7 and 9 show another embodiment wherein the clamping elements 25 each comprise a rod having a serrated bore 26 for the cable and split at 28, a web 29 at one end joining the two halves together. The sleeve 33 in this case is of oval cross-section and each clamping element has a wedge-surface 30 formed thereon and engaging the strip 12. A construction suitable for steelcored cables is shown in Fig. 11, the outer cable strands 17a being gripped by elements 14 as described above and the steel cores 17b gripped by elements 25 as described above. The outer sleeve of the connector may be of insulating material.
