Abstract

<PICT:0659075/III/1> <PICT:0659075/III/2> <PICT:0659075/III/3> <PICT:0659075/III/4> Honeycomb structures similar in form to that described in Specification 591,772, [Group VIII], are produced from flexible material such as paper by means of apparatus comprising a platen which receives successive layers of the material in sheet or web form, and one or more rollers which apply to the uppermost surface of the material lines of adhesive as a result of longitudinal reciprocation of the platen or of the rollers, the rollers or the platen being moved laterally or each of two laterally staggered rollers being brought into contact with successive layers alternately to cause lines of adhesive applied to successive layers to be in mutually staggered relationship. In the hand operation of the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a sheet 25 is placed on a platen 13 which is in one extreme position and the platen moved to the other extreme position; this movement through a rack 180 and gear-wheels 19, 20 rotates an adhesive feeding roller 17, which dips into a bath of adhesive 18, and an adhesive applying roller 21 at a peripheral speed equal to the rate of movement of the platen; at the end of the stroke or a complete reciprocation the platen 13 is displaced laterally with respect to a bed 12, or the roller 21 is moved axially, or an adhesive applying roller (not shown) off-set relative to the roller 21 is brought into operation, a second sheet 25 is superimposed on the first and either the return stroke or another reciprocation of the platen is performed. The cycle of operations may be repeated, the roller 21 adjusting itself to accommodate the mounting height of the pile of sheets. Cam apparatus (not shown) may be incorporated to render the operations automatic. As shown in Figs. 10 and 11 an adhesive applying roller 150 may have grooves 151 or flanges 154 and an adjustable doctor scraper 152 or 156; the adhesive being supplied either from a reservoir as at 140, Fig. 8, into which a feed-roller 141 dips and applies the adhesive picked up to a driven applying roller 142, or through a central hollow conduit and liquid feed channels within the applying roller.
