Abstract

639,086. Luminescent materials. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 14, 1948, No. 1167. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1947. [Class 39 (i)] A phosphor is formed by heating in air or in an oxidizing atmosphere at from 1000‹ to 1200‹ C., a dry mixture of magnesium oxide, titanium oxide, a manganese compound capable of furnishing manganous oxide and aluminium fluoride in the following proportions : MgO from 2 to 4 mols. for 1 mol. TiO2, manganese compound to give 0.01 to 0.1 per cent by weight MnO, and AlF3 from 10 to 20 per cent by weight. Either manganese carbonate or manganese fluoride may be used. If the latter substance is used the heating is performed in an oxidizing atmosphere and suitable proportions are MgO, 30 gms ; TiO2, 30 gms. ; AlF3, 9 gms. ; MnF2, 0.08 gms. Beryllium oxide increases the friability of the phosphor and impurities such as zirconium oxide, stannic oxide, antimony, trioxide, zinc oxide, copper and iron do not impair the brightness of the phosphor, but phosphates are harmful.
