Abstract

560,144. Vehicle steering gear. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., and RODWAY, J. June 23, 1942, No. 8612. [Class 135] A power assisted vehicle steering gear has a double-acting piston f or two single-acting pistons connected by a link g with an arm h on a shaft c carrying a drop arm d connected to the steering wheels. The hand steering wheel t is mounted on a column a connected through epicyclic gearing in the casing q and worm gearing in the casing b with the shaft c. A projection r carried by the cage of the epicyclic gear operates a pair of reaction valves housed in casings m, n, to control the supply and exhaust of pressure fluid to and from the power cylinder or cylinders. Each reaction valve comprises a ported piston 8 actuated by a member 7 carrying an adjustable tappet s and provided with a valve seat 19 adapted to cooperate with a valve 11 to control the connection between a pipe k leading to the power cylinder and an atmospheric vent port 12. The valve 11 is carried by a spindle 13 slidable in a guide 14 and formed with a valve head 16 adapted to control the connection between the pipe k and a compressed air inlet o. The piston is acted on by a spring 18 and the valve 16 by a spring 17.
