Abstract

A lasted upper assembly (1) comprises an upper (2) having a peripheral flange (3) attached by stitching (4) to a through board (5). The upper assembly (1) is attached by means of adhesive to a sole (7) having a base (8) and an integral, upstanding, peripheral wall (9), so that the wall (9) covers and protects the peripheral join (6) of the upper assembly (1). Before the upper assembly (1) is fitted into the sole (7), the periphery of the join (6) is trimmed to the correct size. <IMAGE>

Description

A method of making a shoe The present invention relates to a method of making a shoe.
It is known to make a shoe by attaching an upper assembly to a sole. The upper assembly normally comprises a leather upper having a peripheral flange stitched to a through board. The upper assembly is then attached to a moulded plastics sole by means of adhesive. The periphery of the join formed from the flange, the through board and the sole is then trimmed to size.
Although such a shoe is generally satisfactory, there are disadvantages if it is used for children. Owing to children's activities the peripheral join is often scuffed and this can lead to a break-down of the join.
Furthermore, the join is exposed, and can be damaged -if a child walks through a puddle.
The invention provides a method of making a shoe as claimed in claim 1.
The invention also provides a shoe made by this method.
Thus, the peripheral join is protected by the peripheral wall of the sole. Furthermore, the appearance of the shoe is enhanced, since the peripheral join is no longer visible.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side view of an upper assembly; Figure 2 is a section taken along the line II-II of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through a sole; and Figure 4 is a diagrammatic side view of the upper assembly of Figure 1 being fitted into the sole of Figure 3; In Figures 1 and 2 an upper assembly 1 comprises a leather upper 2 having a peripheral flange 3 attached by stitching 4 to a through board 5. The flange 3 and the through board 5 form a peripheral join 6, which preferably has a depth of 5mm + 000.5mm.
.The upper assembly is to be attached to a sole 7 shown -in Figure 3. The sole 7 is moulded of plastics and comprises a base 8 having an integral, upstanding peripheral wall 9, preferably having the same height, e.g. 5mm, as the depth of the peripheral join 6.
Before fitting of the upper assembly 1 into the sole 7, the periphery of the join 6 is trimmed to the required shape. The trimmed upper assembly 1 is then inserted into the sole 7 as shown in Figure 4 and attached thereto by adhesive. Since the height of the wall 9 equals the depth of the join 6, the periphery of the join 6 is completely protected by the wall 9, e.g.
against scuffing and wet. Thus, the join 6 is less likely to come apart than a conventional join.

Claims (5)

Claims:
1. A method of making a shoe, wherein a lasted upper assembly is fitted into a sole having an integral peripheral, upstanding wall and is attached thereto by adhesive.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the lasted upper assembly comprises an upper stitched to a through board.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the periphery of the stitched join between the upper and the through board is trimmed to size before fitting into the sole.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the wall of the sole extends substantially over the stitched join.
5. A shoe made by a method claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
5. A method as claimed in claim 3 or 4, wherein the stitched join between the upper and the through board has a thickness of substantially Smm.
6. A method of making shoe substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A shoe made by a method claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. A method of making a shoe, wherein a lasted upper assembly, comprising an upper stitched to a through board, is fitted into a sole having an integral peripheral, upstanding wall and is attached thereto by adhesive, the wall of the sole extending substantially over the whole of the stitched join for the protection thereof.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the periphery of the stitched join between the upper and the through board is trimmed to size before fitting into the sole.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the stitched join between the upper and the through board has a thickness of substantially 5mm.
4. A method of making a shoe substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
