Description
SPECIFICATION
Elongate constructional elements
The present invention relates to elongate constructional elements comprising means whereby such elements may be connected together, each two connected-together elements being at an angle to each other with one end of one element attached to the other element.
In a broad aspect the invention provides apparatus comprising elongate constructional elements, a first of the elements having a wall extending in the lengthwise direction of the element and having an aperture therein, a second of the elements having an end portion capable of being inserted into the aperture and defining at least one side of a slot formed in the second element, the slot extending transversely of the lengthwise direction of the second element, a portion of the wall of the first member adjoining the aperture being engageable in the slot when the end portion of the second member has been inserted into the aperture thereby to connect the first and second elements together.
In a further aspect the invention provides apparatus comprising at least one first element and at least one second element, the or each first element having at least one wall extending in the lengthwise direction of the element and having at least one aperture formed therein, the or each second element having at one or both ends thereof at least one end portion capable of being inserted into one of said apertures of the first element and the or each end portion defining at least one side of a slot formed in the second member, the slot extending transversely of the lengthwise direction of the second element. The first and second elements can be connected together in the manner referred to in the preceding paragraph.That is, to connect together one of the first elements and one of the second elements, the end portion or portions referred to at one end of the second element are inserted into a corresponding aperture or corresponding apertures in the wall or one of the walls of the first element and a portion or portions of the wall adjoining the aperture or apertures is engaged in the slot or slots defined by the end portion or portions.
It is thus possible by connecting together the first and second elements to form a framework.
The first element may have more than one wall provided with said apertures so that two or more of the second elements may be connected thereto at an angle to each other.
Considering now any one of the first elements and any one of the second elements connectable thereto, the apertures in the wall (or one of the walls) of the first element may be arranged in a group of two or four and the end of the second element to be connected thereo may have a like number of end portions insertable into the apertures. The apertures may be spaced apart transversely of the length of the first element and/or in the lengthwise direction of the first element.
Preferably the aperture or apertures are in the, form of slots aligned with the lengthwise direction of the first element.
The or each end portion or portions of the second element is preferably provided by a plate attached to a main body portion of the second element. The slot defined by the or each end portion may be formed wholly in the plate or may be defined between the plate and the main body portion.
The first element is conveniently in the form of a tube so that the end portion or portions of the second element, when inserted into the aperture or apertures are accommodated within the tube.
The main body portion of the second element is also conveniently tubular. The plate or plates forming said end portions may be secured to the inner surface of the tubular main body portion so as to project therefrom.
In one particular preferred aspect of the invention, the first element may be provided with one or more deformable members having one or more flaps and, after the first element has been connected to the second element, the deformable member is deformed so that the flap or flaps lock the end portion(s) of the second element in position to prevent undesired disconnection of the first and second elements.
The invention is further described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of a post and a foot constituting a first element and a second element according to the invention;
Figure 2 is similar to Fig. 1 but shows the foot connected to the post and horizontal braces, constituting second elements according to the invention, for connection to the post;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the upper part of the post of Fig. 1 and a horizontal brace, constituting a second element according to the invention, for connection to the post;
Figure 4 is a vertical section through the post, foot and horizontal brace of Figs. 1 and 3 when the foot and horizontal brace are connected to the post;
Figure 5 is a side view of the foot;
Figure 6 is a side view of the lower part of the post;;
Figure 7 is a plan view of the post;
Figure 8 is a side view of the upper part of the post;
Figure 9 is an end view of one of the braces of Figs. 2 or 3; and
Figure 10 is a side view of one end part of the brace of Fig. 9.
Referring to the drawings, apparatus according to the invention comprises a plurality of like posts including post 1, a plurality of like feet including foot 2 and a plurality of braces including braces 3 and 4.
The post 1 is of square tubular section and at one end (its lower end in use) it is provided with an adjustable tilt glide 5. The glide 5 comprises a foot 6 and a shank 7 screwthreadedly engaged with the lower end of the post so that rotation of the glide adjusts the overall length of the post.
Towards the lower end of the post 1 are provided in one wall 8 of the post a group of two slots 9 aligned with the lengthwise direction of the post and spaced apart in the lengthwise direction of the post. In each of the adjacent walls 10 of the post (only one of which is visible in Figs. 1 and 2) are provided a group of four slots 11 also aligned with the lengthwise direction of the post and spaced apart both in the lengthwise direction of the post and transversely of the lengthwise direction of the post.
Towards the upper end of the post 1 are provided slots 9' and 11' similar in size, shape and arrangement to the slots 9 and 11 except that the upper two slots 11' in each wall 10 are open to the upper end of the post.
In the upper end of the post is fastened an inner cross member 1 2 formed with two locking flaps 13.
Each foot 2 comprises a main body portion 2a having at one end an adjustable tilt glide 5' similar to the adjustable tilt glide 5 referred to above. At the other end of the foot 2 a plate is fastened within the body portion 2a and has portions 14 and 1 5 projecting from the body portion. The portion 14 has a slot 1 6 formed therein and opening onto the upper edge of the plate. The portion 15, together with the main body portion 2a, defines a slot opening onto the upper edge of the portion 1 5.
Each of the braces 3 and 4 has a tubular main body portion 20 of rectangular section.
At each end of the body portion 20, plates 21 are fastened to the interior of the body portion and project therefrom. The plates 21 define, together with the main body portion 20, slots 22 which open at the lower edges of the projecting portions of the plates.
To assemble the various elements of the apparatus, the projecting portions 14 and 1 5 of the plate of each foot 2 is inserted into the corresponding slots 9 of the post 1 and the foot is then moved upwardly (from the position shown in dashed lines in Fig. 4) relative to the post 1 so that the portions of the wall 8 above and adjoining the slots 9 enters the slots 1 6 and 1 7 of the foot thereby to lock the foot to the post.
The horizontal braces 3 are similarly connected to the post 1 by inserting the projecting portions of the plates 21 of each brace 3 into the corresponding slots 11 of the post and then moving the brace downwardly relative to the post so that the portions of the wall 10 below and adjoining the slots 11 enter the slots 22.
Each brace 5 is similarly connected to the post 1 by inserting the projecting portions of the plates 21 of the brace into the corresponding slots 11' and then moving the brace downwardly relative to the post. The brace 4 is then locked in position by bending down the respective locking flap 1 3 onto the upper projecting portions of the plate 21.
The material of the member 1 2 must of course be of material such that the flaps 1 3 do not spring back towards their original position once they have been bent down.
Such a framework may be used to support or carry panels for use as partitions or as shelving or for use in constructing cupboards and desks.
The framework may be easily and speedily constructed and may be light in weight.
Moreover, a large variety of different frameworks may be constructed depending on the arrangement of the assembled elements and thus the invention is very versatile.
It will be seen from the drawings that the projecting portions 1 4 and 1 5 of the plates of the feet 2 and the projecting portions of the plates 21 are referred to as "dog hooks".
The various elements of the apparatus, apart from possibly the tilt glides, may be made of mild steel.
