Abstract

1459426 Pocket inhalers ALLEN & HANBURYS Ltd 23 Jan 1974 [26 Feb 1973] 9246/ 73 Heading A5T An inhalation device comprises a cylindrical body I with a dispersion chamber 2 therein, a rotor 5 in said chamber being rotated on the passage of air therethrough, one or more inlet apertures 10 in the body, said apertures opening, around the periphery of the rotor, into said chamber, a mouthpiece 4 for inhaling air from said chamber and a capsule-retaining pocket 11 in the wall of body 1, arranged to receive a pierced capsule 13 and opening into said chamber, inhalation of air through the mouthpiece drawing powdered medicament from the capsule through the chamber and out through the mouthpiece, at the same time as rotating said rotor. A capsule-piercing pocket 15 containing a needle 14 is provided in said body. The rotor is mounted on a spindle 6 carried by a cross-bar 8 extending across said mouthpiece. The retaining pocket is arranged so that one end of the capsule located therein extends into the chamber, the rotor being positioned, in the instance of a cohesive powder with the capsule, so as to brush against the end of the capsule to cause vibration thereof. The rotor shown comprises two blades extending in opposite directions radially outwards from a spindle sleeve 7, one of said blades having a cut-away portion (17), Fig. 5, (not shown), although any number of blades set on any desired angle, and/or being curved may be used. The device, except for the needle and spindle, is made of plactics, preferably having a high resistance to the build-up of static electricity, the capsule being formed of hard gelatine.
