Abstract
1437083 Controlling vehicles P J COAKER 21 May 1973 [6 April 1972 19 Sept 1972 29 Sept 1972] 15805/72 Heading B7H [Also in Divisions G3 F1 and F2] An arrangement for limiting the maximum speed of a vehicle includes a mechanical link whose length can be altered interposed between a speed controlling device (accelerator pedal) and the engine speed control device (throttle valve) where the length of the link is adjusted when the detected road speed differs from the signalled maximum speed. The mechanical link described employs an electric motor 46 to drive through gearing 48 a rotatable screw system 17 which alters the distance between the ends of rods 12 and 16 and thus changes the length of the link between accelerator and throttle. Limit switches are operated by peg 57 to ensure that the motor reverses at the end of the adjustment travel. In operation a maximum speed signal is provided, which might be signalled by radio or ultrasonically and a comparison made between this speed and the actual road speed. If the road speed exceeds the maximum speed signal motor 46 runs to lengthen the link and thus close the engine throttle. When the speed is less than the maximum the motor runs in the reverse direction to shorten the link to allow movement of the throttle setting to a position which gives the set maximum speed regardless of further depression of the accelerator.
