Abstract

1342457 Treating refuse BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 April 1972 [26 April 1971] 19200/72 Heading C1K Solid organic refuse is treated by (i) preheating and drying, (ii) pyrolising to produce carbon char and (iii) oxidizing to produce an ash residue without sintering by contacting the char with an oxidizing gaseous medium containing oxygen and water (preferably at 400-900‹ C.), the evolved hot, non-oxidizing gases being employed to effect (ii) from which the evolved gases at 100-200‹ C. are employed to effect (i). The process may be carried out in a single retort 10 equipped with heat sensors 65-69, oxidizing gas inlets 25, waste-gas off-take 24 and optional air inlet 27.
