Abstract

1295306 Electroluminescence RCA CORPORATION 14 April 1970 [23 April 1969] 17684/70 Heading C4S [Also in Division H1] An optical semi-conductor device assembly for mounting on a support comprises a cylindrical metal stud 12 with stem 20 for mounting and a flange 28 extending from the stud and having a surface parallel to the longitudinal axis of same, light emitting PN element 14 mounted on the surface, one side being electrically connected to the flange (e.g. by 99% Sn and 1% Bi solder) and the junction extending parallel to the flange surface to a light emitting end surface 34 of the element which faces away from the stem, terminal wire 16 extending through the stud stem and insulated therefrom, the wire being connected to the other side of the PN element. The sc. mounting allows electrical connection, heat dissipation and alignment with the target to be illuminated and the coaxial assembly reduces inductance and permits conventional coaxial connections. Stud 12 may be cold rolled steel coated with thin protective Ni and Au films, stud dimensions being given, flat surface 26a assists aligning, wire 16 may be Ni-Fe with the protective Ni and Au films, insulator 36 may be silicon alkali glass fused to wire 16 and stem 20 to provide hermetic seal, wire 38 may be 2 mm. Au wire, while cover 18 includes metal and glass walls 40, 42 respectively, the former being welded for instance to stud 26. The alignment of one or more assemblies in a panel or chassis is discussed, flat surface 26a indicating the position of element 14 in respect of the stud axis.
