Abstract

1280066 Filters for oil-water separation MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 29 May 1970 26107/70 Heading B1D An oil-water mixture is separated using a plurality of adjacent oleophillic fibrous filters 6 e.g. of nylon, each fibre being stretched and aligned in the same direction and held between two annular plates, Fig. 2 (not shown). In operation an oil-water mixture is fed in at 1 into a first settling chamber 2, optionally preceded by a coarse meshed wire gauze to prevent large sized solids from passing. Oil is tapped via 10 whilst solids are removed at the bottom. The mixture then enters the filter section 3 whereby the oil particles are deposited upon the fibres. Further oil particles collide and coagulate with those on the fibres and the larger formed droplets then pass on downstream. If solids block up the spaces between the fibres the subsequent rise in pressure causes their removal. Oil particles which float up in a second settling chamber 4 are tapped at 11. Water is withdrawn at 5.
