Abstract
1,269,297. Graft polymers. INSTITUT FIZICHESKOI KHIMII AKADEMII NAUK SSSR. 17 July, 1970, No. 34720/70. Heading C3G. Synthetic polymer or wood is rendered fungu<SP>s</SP> resistant in a process which comprises contacting the synthetic polymer or wood with a trialkylacryloxystannane of the formula in which R is an alkyl group and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and graft polymerizing the trialkylacryloxystannane on to the polymer or wood by the action of ionizing radiation until at least 0À5% by weight based on the weight of polymer or wood is graft polymerized, the polymer or wood being irradiated with ionizing radiation either before or after being contacted with the trialkylacryloxystannane. The trialkylacryloxystannane is preferably triethylmethacryloxystannane. The ionizing radiation is suitably gamma radiation derived from a Co<SP>60</SP> source, the total dosage of radiation being suitably 0À1-0À5 Mrad. The polymer or wood may be contacted with the trialkylacryloxystannane in solution in a suitable solvent, e.g. acetone, benzene, methyl alcohol, or a mixture of acetone and methyl alcohol and the concentration of the trialkylacryloxystannane in the solution is suitably 6-20% by weight. Examples refer to the graft polymerizing on to polyethylene, polpropylene and polycaproamide, which may be irradiated either before or after contacting with triethylmethacryloxystannane ; polyvinyl chloride, and bars of spruce, pine, birch and oak which are irradiated after contacting with triethylmethacryloxystannane.
