Abstract

1,268,938. Earth drills. M. K. RUSSELL. 7 April, 1970 [8 April, 1969], No. 17868/69. Heading E1F. [Also in Division G3] An earth drill has a servo 3 for changing the drilling angle α and a servo 6 for changing the orientation of the drill. The drill is driven by a down-the-hole motor 8 preferably driven by drilling fluid, and electrical or hydraulic power for the servos is generated by power offtake from the drill motor, or by a separate motor. The angle servo 3 may be preset manually, or may be controlled by a programmer; the servo may have only two positions, for example α=0 and α=2‹. The measuring device 5 measures components of the earth's gravitational and magnetic fields, preferably about three body axes, for controlling the angular position of the servo 6, and for on-off control of the servo 3. The servos may be controlled by a programme carrier 11, which is lowered down the drill pipe to engage a receiver at the end of the control unit. A mule-shoe (12) and pin (13) locate the carrier at a predetermined angular position on the receiver, and adjustable bar magnets on the carrier are preset as references for the control system. The carrier may be retrieved by sending a fishing tool down the drill pipe, and the settings of the magnets changed.
