Abstract
1,124,109. Stretching thermoplastic sheet material; films and filaments. W. R. GRACE & CO. 26 Oct., 1965 [2 Dec., 1964], No. 45300/65. Headings B5A and B5B. A synthetic organic thermoplastic article is biaxially oriented by stretching the article in one direction so that a necking shoulder forms while a compressive force is applied normal to the shoulder. The article may be passed over a straight edge so that the shoulder coincides with the edge, and the angle between the lines of travel of the article before and after stretching is 5-175 degrees. The edge may be the forward edge of a plate, which may be heated. The article may be caused to travel by two pairs of draw rolls, the second pair being driven at a higher peripheral speed than the first pair. The article may be of e.g. polyamides, polyester, polyolefin, or vinyl or vinylidene polymer or copolymer, and may be in the form of a film, tape, ribbon, or monofilament.
