Abstract
A process for the continuous chlorination of 1,1,1-trichloroethane in the absence of light comprises reacting chlorine with 1,1,1-trichloroethane in the liquid phase either alone or mixed with one or more C 1 -C 4 chloroalkanes and/or chloroalkenes in at least one reaction zone at a temperature of from 35 to 120 C. in the presence of ferric chloride and/or iron oxychloride as catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out in a two-zone reactor, the catalyst only being present in the first zone. Products of the reaction are 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and pentachloroethane.
